In her most recent New York Times bestseller, Rita Mae Brown tells the story of Geneva Chatfield and Nash Hart, who are married just five days before the South secedes from the Union. 5-0 out of 5 stars a second read
I seldom read a book twice, but this is one of a 1/2 dozen that I have read twice and I loved it even more the second time. Everyone in the south was impacted by the Civil War and indeed many women fought on the battle field but even more fought to protect their homes and families. This is one womans story that I personnally would love to see turned into a WE or Lifetime movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
The Rita Mae Brown book, High Hearts was a thrilling read from cover to cover. It was a look back in time to a woman who goes to war, the Civil War as a man, so that she can be with her new husband. More than a romance, but with more substance than an adventure tale, I could read this book over and over. I never knew about the phenomenon this book was based on, but apparently, there were several women who did in fact, pass for men, in order to go to war. Not complicated, or hard to follow, this book is enjoyable with some thought provoking aspects as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Civil War as Seen and Fought by the Ladies
There were uncounted women who cut their hair, lowered their voices and took up arms on both sides of The Civil War.Rita Mae Brown does a wonderful job crafting a fictional story using this truth as her premise. The characters are richly drawn (I actually preferred the evolution of Geneva's mother, Lutie, to Geneva herself), and the story layered and interesting.

Geneva can't bear to be away from her husband when he enlists as soon as the guns fire on Fort Sumter. She joins him as a soldier, and learns some unpleasant truths about him and about war.She finds that she has a talent for fighting and that she and her husband aren't as compatible as they might have been had they not rejected their "traditional" roles.

Rita Mae Brown's interesting Foreword and endnotes provide context and explanation for her literary choices, and greatly enrich the experience.I give this book four stars instead of five because at the end, there are several characters whose final stories are only alluded to, as in, "this happened, but that's a story for another day."I wanted to know what happened for these folks, and this abrupt ending felt like laziness, as if Miss Brown just didn't feel like writing any further.Unfortunate, as it left a bad taste after the novel had been so interesting up to that point.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Hearts
One of the best written by Rita Mae Brown. Gives a different perspective on the Civil War. Should be more like it showing the losers side.I highly recommend this book. I have given it as gifts to friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Five for High Hearts by R. M. Brown
This book is very unusual for Rita Mae Brown and I consider it her best work! It's all in one: A love story, a history book (American Civial War & Slavery), a feminist novel, funny, serious, ironic, and critical of society. The reader experiences the war through the eyes of captivating characters you just have to fall in love with! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Whisker of Evil
I thought the book had a lot of "punch".It surprised me.It is one of the better books in the series because it has an unexpected ending and an upecpected "bad guy."

4-0 out of 5 stars A Turning Point
I just re-read this book, and I really enjoyed it again. This book contains some turning points in the story for some of the characters and it's one that you shouldn't miss! Right off the bat, you're hooked with a gruesome murder and it's hard to set it down once you've started reading this one. The book plays out great, and does a good job at intertwining another 30-year old mystery throughout. I thought the conclusion was suburb and unexpected (although reading it again I did pick up on some of the hints.)

It is great for animal lovers, and the book does go into some more in depth knowledge, which for me growing up around Veterinarians I understood. None-the-less, it's still interesting and holds up the story.

I still love all the characters, especially Aunt Tally! She's hilarious!

3-0 out of 5 stars Whisker of Evil
For fans of Rita Mae Brown this is a great book.It continues the adventures of Mrs. Murphy and her many animal friends.I think this book even adds some animals we haven't heard from before. There are changes in Harry's personal and professional life of great interest to Harry's fans. There is the usual mystery.I wouldn't start the series with this book; however. Readers will want a little more background and should start with a book that was published earlier.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you have to do a mundane chore
such as painting a room, or cleaning the kitchen, these books are entertaining as audio books. At the risk of sounding "snobbish" (which I am not) they are a cross between "Murder She Wrote" and Mr. Ed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!
This is one of two books Ive read in her series. I didnt know it was a series till recently. The other one I also saw as a movie and this one I heard on C.D. with my daughter. ( as well as reading them. )
I think Mrs. Brown and partner are fantastic when it comes to intruge. My daughter screams at me everytime we get into the car and I dont have the book playing. 9 disks go a long way and I think its great learning for a baby under one to be read to as much as possible.
There are so many factions to this book and so many things come "to light" as a tie in to the other book that Ive read so I didnt have a problem keeping up with it all even though the two books are so spaced apart ( 3 years by the book standards) and about 4 or 5 since I read the last one.
I plan to get them all now that I know Mrs. Murphy has her own series of books. My daughter and I will become greater fans together when we read/hear her books at bed time! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good romance read
TLhis is a romance novel and I am used to the cat series by Rita Mae Brown, which I really enjoy.

This story has just enough, sex, humor, love, and pace to make it an interesting and enjoyable read.

Would read others of this type from this author.

J. Robert Ewbank, anthor "John Wesley, Natural Man, and the 'Isms'"

1-0 out of 5 stars Rita Mae, I want my money back!
This is the worst lesbian romance novel I've ever read. There was little, if any character development. And the sex scenes were so pathetically written they put me to sleep. I've read lesbian romance stories online for free that blew this one out of the water. Don't waste your time on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Southern Fun
This is a good book by a great author.I won't rehash the book blub here but the story line if full of twists so if you are looking for a clean cut black and white romance this isn't it.There is a wide range of characters running through an equally broad spectrum of experiences and emotions. They are witty, they are complex, and they are real.

2-0 out of 5 stars The research is lacking
As someone who graduated from William and Mary in 1979, about the same year that some of the characters in this book are supposed to have graduated, I had a hard time with the fundamental lack of understanding of the W&M experience displayed in the book.In particular, the football team (and a major character is a football star) was not considered to be a dominant and organizing force at the College. In fact, many people in my class remember protesting at Board of Visitors meetings when the board was considering expanding the football stadium in order to accommodate an expanded football program that would play bigger and better teams. We didn't want it.Rich football star boyfriend?Oh, puh-lease.

It may be a small thing to point out, but, if you're going to set a book in a particular location at a particular time, it would take next to no effort to do a little research to see what was going on there at that time.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Horrid Example
This book is a "horrid example".

The author and Martina Navratilova were, for a time, a very public couple. Then they broke up. And Brown made the fatal error of writing a roman-à-clef. This is always a mistake. Getting revenge on your ex is death on good writing. It's a shame, because Brown is ordinarily an excellent writer.

1-0 out of 5 stars A double fault
You really have to love tennis or Rita Mae (or both) to stick with this one to the end. I am not a tennis fan so I skipped a lot of the play by play action. The story line was interesting though and if there had been less sports commentary and more interaction between the characters it would have been really great. Carmen is a spoiled brat and does not deserve the long suffering Harriett.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Thinly-Veiled & Dull Bio ofBrown's Life With Navratilova
Even though this book was terrible, it starred lesbians, and that's got to count for something. Exactly 2 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tennis Soap Opera
A more-than-likely realistic look at the female pro-tennis circuit from Martina's erstwhile lover, Rita Mae Brown.Includes an erotic lesbian encounter in a motel room between female tennis star, the dominant Carmen Semana, and her latest conquest, the submissive Bonnie Bishop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet revenge served with a spin
This book, clearly about the author's time as Martina Navratilova's tennis tour spouse, manages to relive the time withoutjilted love bitterness (or even mentioning the tennis star).Very good description of the tennis circuit. Contains one of Brown's best ever scenes: the verbal battle between two friends (winner gets a Tiffany stick pin) to name the most brand names of movie theatre candy -- hilarious and uniqely Rita Mae Brown. ... CLAWS AND EFFECT

Winter puts tiny Crozet, Virginia, in a deep freeze and everyone seems to be suffering from the winter blahs, including postmistress Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen. So all are ripe for the juicy gossip coming out of Crozet Hospital–until the main source of that gossip turns up dead. It’s not like Harry to resist a mystery, and she soon finds the hospital a hotbed of ego, jealousy, and illicit love.

But it’s tiger cat Mrs. Murphy, roaming the netherworld of Crozet Hospital, who sniffs out a secret that dates back to the Underground Railroad. Then Harry is attacked and a doctor is executed in cold blood.

Soon only a quick-witted cat and her animal pals feline Pewter and corgi Tee Tucker stand between Harry and a coldly calculating killer with a prescription for murder.

In a small town, everyone knows each other's secrets--or do they? When a Crozet Hospital staff member is found murdered in the boilerroom, everyone in the bucolic Virginia burg is puzzled and none more sothan postmistress "Harry" Haristeen. With the help of her two curiouskitties, Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and her corgi, Tucker (who find humanperception maddeningly slow), Harry soon finds herself entangled in thestrange web of misdoings at the hospital.

The ninth installment in Rita Mae Brown's "Mrs. Murphy" series, Claws and Effect is more entertaining than suspenseful, with a liberal dose of wittyconversations among the animals punctuated by Itoko Maeno's adorableillustrations of the four-legged sleuths. There is just enoughmisdirection to keep mystery buffs guessing and enough social gossipamong the town's human citizens to make readers eagerly anticipate theirnext visit to Crozet. --Larisa Lomacky Moore ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Mrs. Murphy Mystery
Written in the superb way only Rita Mae Brown can. Mrs. Murphy and Tee Tucker help Harry solve another mystery in the series. Please buy this whole series. You will get hooked and can't wait for the next one each time I finish. A great series to have and reread. I love Rita Mae's books. These mysteries are light, yet have a good mystery story with some comedic presence thrown in. Great reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars another good one
I've been reading the Mrs Murphy books for years.Got a little behind. But am catching up with Claws & Effect. As with all these books, they are well written and very entertaining.Plus I love the animals!

5-0 out of 5 stars Working in Medicine Can be a Killer Job
In the 9th book in Mrs. Murphy and Tucker mystery series, something fishy is going on at Crozet Hospital.A staff member is found dead in the boiler room at the small town hospital, and before long, Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) is poking her nose into the death. She soon starts to speculate that something must be going on in the hospital that caused a killer to become nervous and murder the manager.Normally curious by nature (she has been known to read the postcards), postmistress Harry is aided in the mystery by her cats, Mrs. Murphy (a tiger) and Pewter (a rather fat grey cat), and her dog, Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi). As the animals accompany Harry nearly everywhere, they use their heightened senses to find clues and gently guide their human to help put the pieces of the mystery together.Hospital corruption is exposed, and Harry, with the help of Deputy Cynthia Cooper, must work quickly to find the murderer before any more victims turn up.

I have enjoyed each of the books in this series, and found this one to be one of my favorites.I was kept guessing until the end as to who the murderer might be, and even though I figured out what was going on with the hospital, I found myself wondering how Harry and her animal friends would uncover the truth.I was shocked and saddened by the death of a long-time member of the series, because the books are good not only for the mysteries, but for the strength of the characters. These books make you want to pack your bags and visit Crozet, Virginia.

If you enjoy the KoKo and Yum Yum mysteries by Lilian Jackson Braun, give this series a try.The 1st book in the series is called "Wish You Were Here".Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars It Was Fine - Until The Ending!
The good thing about this book is that it's a fast read. Then you hit a wall during the last few chapters when it gets all "mystical" and that's where it lost me. I was fine with the reality part of it and the ending disappointed me a little. I was sorta glad when I was done with it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Showed promise but a disappointing ending
I read this book and it began really well, and I thought that the story had promise but when I read the last quarter of this book, it got really boring, and had to put it down. The book started off well showing promise but faltering at the end. I was disappointed. The ending should have been better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lazy writing
I thought the beginning of this book was GREAT! So funny and smart. And then it's not. One specific complaint is she has one of the characters go on a page-long tirade against Michael Milken and Reagan and other evil people from the 80s. It seems like she wanted to say these things and instead of cleverly weaving her opinions into her story through her character, she just has them say it, even when it hurts the flow of the story. It seemed lazy. And that was a problem throughout the book for me; good idea but poorly executed.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOOOO Funny
This is the absolute funniest book I've ever read in my life.Strange ending, but laugh-out-loud-by-yourself funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting twist
This book is certainly full of family DRAMAS, not unlike any other family. It lets us take a look at "other" and see it in ourselves and just laugh about it.The twist and the end introduced a mystical element that, at first seemed out of place, considering nothing else in the novel was mystical.Nevertheless I enjoyed it and the teachings that drama offered. ... Product Description
It takes a cat to write the purr-fect mystery.

Things have been pretty exciting lately in Crozet, Virginia--a little too exciting if you ask resident feline investigator Mrs. Murphy. Just as the town starts to buzz over its Civil War reenactment, a popular local man disappears. No one's seen Tommy Van Allen's single-engine plane, either--except for Mrs. Murphy, who spotted it during a foggy evening's mousing.

Even Mrs. Murphy's favorite human, postmistress Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, can sense that something is amiss. But things really take an ugly turn when the town reenacts the battle of Oak Ridge--and a participant ends up with three very real bullets in his back. While the clever tiger cat and her friends sift through clues that just don't fit together, more than a few locals fear that the scandal will force well-hidden town secrets into the harsh light of day. And when Mrs. Murphy's relentless tracking places loved ones in danger, it takes more than a canny kitty and her team of animal sleuths to set things right again....Amazon.com Review
The animals in Crozet, Virginia, are a lot smarter than the humans, which will come as no surpriseto the devoted fans of Rita Mae Brown's mysteriesfeaturing Mrs. Murphy the tiger cat, the luxury-loving feline known asPewter, and Tee Tucker, a curious corgi. In their seventh outing, they'releaps and bounds ahead of Harry Haristeen, the spunky postmistress theycall Mom. Long before anyone else knows what's going on, they've figuredout the connection between the shot fired at wealthy Sir HenryVane-Tempest during the reenactment of a Civil War battle and a missingairplane hidden in Tally Urquhart's barn. They're better at findingevidence trampled underfoot at a crime scene than any detective is, andthey know just whose lap to drop it in. While they might not understandexactly why county commissioner Archie Ingram is so exercised aboutVane-Tempest's plans for development in Albemarle County--particularly whenit promises to make him as wealthy as the husband of the woman heloves--they've sniffed out the sexual shenanigans that threaten to derailthe private pact between Crozet's leading citizens. If Harry and herfriends knew what the animals know, there'd be no mystery about it; there'donly be a charming and lighthearted story of chicanery in the new Old Southwith plenty of local color, the scent of lilacs wafting through every page, and the deft prose of a writer on top of her game. But then, there'd be noraison d'etre for the liveliest scene in the book, wherein Mrs. Murphy,Pewter, and Tee take a turbo-charged Porsche for a breakneck ride throughVirginia's verdant hills and dales. By the end of the book, the onlymystery is whether Harry and Fair, her favorite ex-husband, will manage toget back together again in the next installment--or the one after that--of this popular series. --Jane Adams ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Violation of a cozy rule!
I'm reading this series in order. In this book (the seventh in the series), as in most of the books so far,the plotting is shaky and inconsistent, but the characters are interesting.

HOWEVER, the author violates one of the cardinal "rules" of cozies in this book.

One of the expectations or rules of cozy mysteries is that the murderer be not only revealed, but that he (or she) has to pay some kind of price. He has to face justice -- either by being arrested and then found guilty in a trial, or by being killed at the end of the book.SPOILER: But at the end of this book the murderer has succeeded in everything. He has murdered two people; he has accomplished what he wanted to do; he still has all his wealth and his attractive wife; and no one can pin anything on him.So he walks free, and only the reader knows what he has done.

I'm going to continue reading this series, but with the hope that all the rest of the murderers get what's coming to them.

4-0 out of 5 stars haven't read it yet
I like the autor, I sure the book will be just as good as the one I'm curent;y reading.Murder she meowed this is a good book as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't start here
Once again Mary Minor (Harry) and her friends, both human and animal are faced with a problem in thequiet town of Cozet, Virginia. This time the action begins with the mysterious disappearance of a local man and soon various other problems begin to surface. With more than a little help from Mrs Murphy, Pewter and Tucker, Harry manages to ferret out the answers.

Many people have recommended this series to me since it combined many of my interests - cozy series mystery featuring cats, dogs and horses.I finally picked up one and was quite frankly disappointed.Yes, it included all my favorite elements but I had a very difficult time finishing it.There were so many characters, the action jumped from place to place and subplot to subplot and there were so many references to things that had taken place in earlier novels that I often found myself at a loss. The major problem may have been that I happened to pick up this, the sixth novel in the series.Perhaps I would have been better off starting at the beginning of the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love all the Sneaky Pie Brown books
I love to read these books when I am in the mood for something light and fun...there is always a mystery but I love all the main characters and animals...long live Mrs. Murphy, Tee Tucker and Pewter!

4-0 out of 5 stars Driving is Not Just For Humans Anymore!
In the 7th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker mystery series, the citizens of Crozet, Virginia are up in arms about water. It seems that the water supply in the county is in jeopardy, and the county commission feels that the reservoir plan that it currently has is outdated. When one of the members goes missing, and his plane is found hidden, there is a general suspicion that something terrible must have happened to him.But these thoughts are put aside as the town prepares for their Civil War reenactment of the battle of Oak Ridge. Most of the town participates...either in the battle reenactment itself, orbeing a spectator of it.During the battle, a wealthy member of the town is shot and wounded, and it becomes clear that it was no accident. And when the missing town commissioner is found dead, a whole lot of questions begin to arise about the commissioners and their recent activities.Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) noses around like usual, and with the help of her irrepressible animals, finds that several members of the town have big secrets and big profits in mind.

I love this charming series! For some, the dialogue between the animals might be a bit confusing, but I feel that the antics and conversations of the animals only add to the fun.In this installment, Mrs. Murphy (a tiger cat), Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi), and Pewter (a fat gray cat) not only find several huge clues to the mystery, but also learn how to drive a Porsche! There are also some good tidbits about Harry's family, and the scandal that rocked Crozet many years before.I love this town, the lively cast of characters, and the rich setting.I cannot wait to pick up the next book, and visit them all again soon!

The first book in the series is called "Wish You Were Here".Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Great Books Together!
In "Wish You Were Here", we meet Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) and Mrs. Murphy (a tiger cat) and Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi). Harry is recently divorced and a postmistress in Crozet, Virginia a very small town. She has grown up there, and finds it difficult adjusting to life as a divorcee' in such a small town. Half of the town is on her side, the other half on the side of her ex, Fair Haristeen, a beloved local vet. It also doesn't help that Harry is constantly seeing Boom Boom Craycroft, the other woman who broke up her marriage. But working in the town's post office with her pets each day does offer its own diversions. One such diversion is reading post cards...something Harry has always done. When 2 prominent business people are killed after receiving graveyard postcards reading "wish you were here", Harry realizes there is a pattern to the killing. And when a good friend receives one, Harry springs into action to stop the killer in his/her tracks.

In "Rest In Pieces", the animals once again play a huge role in solving a murder. The main character, Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry), along with her two animal friends Mrs. Murphy (a gray tiger cat) and Tucker (a corgi) lead the way. When newcomer, Blair Bainbridge, rolls into town a lot of folks in Crozet, Virginia believe that trouble rolled in with him. The handsome bachelor turns many female heads, and Harry tries to convince herself that she has sworn off men since her divorce. When pieces of a dead body are found on Blair's property, tongues start to wag. And when more pieces of the body are discovered during the Harvest Ball, a tragic event from Blair's past comes back to haunt him. Has this "Yankee" brought murder to this sleepy small-town?

Having just finished reading the first book in the series, I admit it was much easier for me to follow the dialogue between the animals in this second installment. At first, I had a difficult time following the discussions between the animals, as it adds to the already large cast of characters. However, I adore the way the animals speak to one another! Their antics are charming, and I find that it adds a lot to this great series.

The mystery had me guessing until the end. Normally, I am able to figure out the mysteries pretty quickly (as many cozies give a lot of clues), but I was surprised at the ending. This is a great series, and I look forward to reading the extensive collection of books by this author (and Sneaky Pie, of course!).

In "Murder at Monticello", a body has been discovered in the slave quarters of the home of Thomas Jefferson. Since Jefferson has been dead for 170 years, it is impossible to question him about the man found dead from a blow to the dead. And when another recently murdered body is discovered, it becomes apparent that someone wants the secrets that have been buried with the body to remain so. Coming into question is the practice of slavery, and the descendants of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson had been rumored to have fathered a child by one of his slaves, and it appears that the man found murdered may have been also been involved with one of the slaves. The citizens of Crozet band together to prove that their beloved Jefferson had nothing to do with the murder or cover-up, and while doing so they unearth secrets that have been hidden in the town for over a century.

I have become a big fan of this series, and enjoy the banter between the animals. The relationships between the members of the town have been evolving, and I like the way that Harry is loved and embraced by the people who have known her all of her life. She works hard, cares for her animals, and genuinely cares for the town and its residents. I look forward to future books in the series, and am hopeful to see more of Blair as a potential love interest for Harry.

If you like the KoKo and Yum Yum series by Lilian Jackson Braun, give this book a try. Enjoy!
