Product Description
INTRODUCTION Francis Bacon - Baron Verulam and Viscount St Albans, but not Lord Bacon, as he is sometimes erroneously styled-was born at York House, Strand, the London mansion of his father, January 22, 1561. He was the younger son, by his second wife, of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal from 1558 till his death in 1579-a man of profound legal learning, unswerving devotion to principle, and statesmanlike sagacity. Both Camden and George Buchanan designate him, in common with Sir W. Cecil (Lord Burghley) as "twin pillars of the State." The second wife of the Lord Keeper and the mother of Francis was Anne, daughter of Sir Anthony Cooke, who had been the tutor of Edward VI. To his instructions were largely due the culture and piety of the youthful sovereign. His daughters, Katherine, Mildred, and Anne, also trained by their parent, were celebrated as prodigies of learning even in an age when the glamour of Renaissance studies still tempted women to forsake the distaff

This volume of eight new essays by leading scholars provides a stimulating dialogue between a range of critical perspectives. Encompassing the fields of cultural history, history of science, literature, and politics, the collection explores The New Atlantis' complex location within Bacon's oeuvre and its negotiations with cultural debates of the past and present. Often regarded as the apotheosis of Bacon's ideas through its depiction of an advanced “scientific” society, it is also read as a seminal work of science fiction.

All is not in years to me; somewhat is in hours well spent."—Promus."Yet hath Sir Proteus, for that's his name, Made use and fair advantage of his days; His head uumellow'd, but his judgment ripe." —Two Gentlemen of Verona, ii. 4.MANY and various opinions have been expressed in modern times concerning Francis Bacon, and the motives and aims supposed to have influenced his course and actions in public capacities. We may safely pass by these phases of his wonderful career, so carefully and devotedly recorded in the calm pages of James Spedding, 1 and will for the present consider the personality and life of Bacon from two different aspects: first, as the poet; secondly, as the most ardent promoter, if not the founder, of a vast secret society, destined to create a complete reformation in learning, science, literature, and religion itself, throughout the whole wide world. In the lively works of Hepworth Dixon, and in scattered episodes in Spedding's Life of Bacon, we get occasional peeps behind the scene. But, in the last named work especially, it appears as if we were not meant to do so. The facts that Bacon in his youth " masked and mummed," and led the revels at Gray's Inn; that throughout his life he was appealed to on all great occasions to write witty speeches for others to deliver at the gorgeous " entertainments " which were the fashion of the day (and in which, doubtless, he took a leading part, in the background); that he and his brother Anthony, who was living with him in 1594,actually removed from their lodgings in Gray's Inn to a house in Bishopsgate Street, in the immediate neighborhood of The Bull Inn, where plays and interludes were acted. These and many such important factors in his p... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Proofs of Who Really Wrote Shakespeare
Elizabeth Gallup was the woman who, 300 years later, in the 19th century, finally managed to de-code the cipher that Bacon hinted at, and inserted into his works, including the plays attributed to Shakespeare. This is a practical work, showing how Bacon used two different type alphabets to tell his story. You can use this book to try your hand at de-coding the First Folios now available on the Net.

The book, originally published in 1913, is not very well organized, with some missing directions and a confusing page numbering, but it is nevertheless a priceless find in a day when people seem now generally to be dismissive of the claims of Bacon's authorship. The other books that give the text of his de-coded story seem to be out of print. He explains there that he is really the son of the "Virgin Queen", Elizabeth, who forbids him to claim the throne after her, and how he has to hide his connection with the theatre altogether--a fascinating story, in his own words. ... Product Description
How we arrived at a capacity for taking cold, hard looks at the facts ofnature--and whether we ever truly have done so--are questions that continue to engage bothhistorians of science and students of culture. Historians of modern European intellectual historycommonly credit Francis Bacon with laying the groundwork for a mode of study that beginswithout presuppositions, religious or otherwise, the kind of searching we know as research andlong have credited as being "disinterested."

In Objectivity in the Making, Julie Robin Solomon shows how "disinterestedness"became a dominant principle of intellectual modernity by examining Bacon's notion of scientificself-distancing against the background of early modern political ideology, socioeconomicbehavior, and traditions of learning. Solomon places him between two cultures--Jacobeanmonarchical mercantilism and the self-distancing strategies of early-seventeenth-century tradersand travelers. She shows that Bacon--by virtue of his prominent political position within theJacobean court, familiarity with prevailing commercial practices, and humanistic learning--madehis signal contributions to natural philosophy because of where he stood at a critical juncture. ...
