    Extractions: Given in 1876; located in Hall of Columns. John Winthrop was born in Suffolk County, England, on January 12, 1587 or 1588. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1613. He practiced law in London and was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1628. Winthrop's Puritan convictions led him to take an interest in the new Massachusetts Bay Colony in the New World. His involvement in the planning and management of the corporation resulted in his being appointed governor of the colony in 1629. He left England the next year to take his new post in Massachusetts. Gifted in practical affairs and the art of government, Winthrop was the foremost political leader in the colony for nearly 20 years, including twelve non-consecutive terms as governor. Religious leaders were actively involved while the colony struggled to develop a form of government compatible with Puritan beliefs. Winthrop's views differed on occasion from those of the clergy; these disputes led to an eventual inquiry into dissension in the colony, with the result that Winthrop agreed to follow Puritan ideals more closely. At the same time, the colony had come under criticism in England. Winthrop successfully argued for its continuation in a letter to the Lords Commissioners for Plantations. In 1640 he held a post with the Court of Assistants, and in 1642 he was elected to the chief magistracy. In 1645 Winthrop was instrumental in forming the United Colonies and served as its first president. His contributions to Massachusetts continued until his death on March 26, 1649.

Ten years later, in 1630, Winthrop and one thousand others arrived in America setting up the Massachusetts Bay Colony. After ten more years passed, the immigration ceased with a total accumulation of around twenty thousand Englishmen. Winthrop, the twenty thousand Puritan Englishmen, and their descendents had a large affect on our Christian heritage as a Nation as well as the heritage of Old England. The New England Way began more and more to prevail over Old England ( Hosmer 3). Winthrop's goal as the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was to lead them to be a 'Modell' to Old England of a colony based on Biblical principles. Yet we know from Winthrop's numerous and thorough journal entries that his goal as a student, a husband, a father, and a businessman was to be a model Christian. This short paper, however, could not encompass the complete life of anyone adequately, especially not someone as influential as John Winthrop. Therefore, the focus of this writing will be on John Winthrop's life as a model Christian from his youth, into his manhood, and through the events that led to his arrival in America. John Winthrop's story begins on January 12, 1588, in Edwardston, a tiny village adjoining the city of Groton in the county of Suffolk, England. John was reared in a strict Puritan atmosphere at Groton Manor. Groton Manor was a relatively large estate that his father had inherited and John would acquire when he was of age. Although John had a strict Puritan upbringing, he describes himself in his many journal entries as a 'wild and dissolute' child, meaning he was indifferent to moral restraints or given to immoral or improper conduct. John did not seek to follow God and His ways until his youth (

John grew up on his father's estate, amid gently rolling hills, fields of wheat and rye, and shallow ponds. Three weeks later John was married at the age of seventeen. Ten months later, just after his eighteenth birthday, he became a father. John and his wife Mary worked hard and had six children in ten years. Then Mary suddenly died. After six months John remarried, but on his first wedding anniversary his second wife died. One year later John married his third wife, Margaret. By all accounts, Margaret was one of the most appealing women in all of American history. She was beautiful and gracious. She was also a woman of faith. John Winthrop treasured her as his greatest possession. When he traveled away from home, he never failed to send her love letters. In seventeenth-century England there was no such thing as freedom of religion. There was only the Church of England. But as the Church grew more politicized and hostile to Puritan ideas, it became clear to John that there was little or nothing he could do to reform the Church from within. He did not want to start a war that he could never win. Also, his son Henry became somewhat rebellious, and John began to worry that he might lose his children to the godless popular culture. At the age of forty-two, after a painful struggle, John decided that the only real choice was for him to take his family and move away from England. Rather than fighting political battles with the authorities, he would quietly move away to a new land where he could worship God freely and raise his children in an environment of faith.
