Extractions: ML R 643 Patrick White is the only Australian to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1973). The first publication of White's work was Thirteen Poems , privately printed by his mother, Ruth White, in about 1930. Only two copies have survived. This copy was acquired in 1996 from a Sydney bookseller. It is Patrick White's own copy with his bookplate attached. White destroyed many of his literary manuscripts and directed that all others be destroyed after his death. The manuscript version of his minor work, Memoirs of Many in One (1986), was an exception. White made it available to a London-based charity as a fundraiser for African refugees.

Even folks like me who think that old Potato Famine didn't get rid of nearly enough red-headed vermin can still revel in the godly buzz that comes in righteous funnels from a freshly tapped keg of Killians Red or Busch Dry. Of course, mindful of prying eyes, Laura and I are now careful to end the day by no longer vomiting green beer on the street or each other. After all, that's what the private residence bathrooms are for. This year, it is our family's pleasure to augment our usual St. Patrick's Day tradition of enjoying an authentic Irish feast of canned corned beef and Lucky Charms by voluntarily allowing an honest-to-goodness Leprechaun to crawl out from under his toadstool and pretend to be welcome in our Protestant home. Le plus grand défi auquel ils font face consiste à gérer cette surabondance de nouvelles de la meilleure façon possible.» Dans le mémoire de maîtrise qu'il a effectué sous la direction de Jean Crête, du Département de science politique et de Florian Sauvageau, du Département d'information et de communication, Patrick White s'intéresse aux facteurs qui sont à l'origine de la crise qui secouent les agences de presse internationales Agence France-Presse (AFP), United Press International (UPI), Reuter et Associated Press (AP) depuis le début des années 1980. Aux termes de cette étude, le chercheur en conclut que ces agences, dont la mission est de diffuser les nouvelles internationales aux médias, ont dû redéfinir leur rôle de «grossiste en nouvelles», suite aux pressions exercées par le développement technologique fulgurant et les soubresauts du marché de l'information internationale au cours des quinze dernières années. «Aujourd'hui, écrit Patrick White dans son mémoire, seuls les grands journaux nationaux peuvent se permettre encore de comparer les informations rapportées dans les grandes agences (...) Pour survivre financièrement, les agences ont dû diversifier leurs produits et leurs clientèles. Elles offrent toutes des services hors-médias et des services de nouvelles financières hautement spécialisées. On se doit donc de parler d'agences d'information plutôt que d'agences de presse.»

He argues that White's rather conventional modernist writings negotiated the end of colonial relations with Britain. During addresses connections between White's homosexuality and his writing, suggesting that many of his texts attain some of their most powerful effects from being written in and about the closet. In addition, he views White as an autobiographical writer who drew on his life to construct an image of himself as a genius: a strategy which successfully set him at the head of Australian national literature.
