    Extractions: Dr Beeler was previously a post-doctoral fellow and lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Calgary. She has published interviews, articles and presented conference papers on subjects such as cultural identity, women's experiences, the relationship between literature and other media and images of Canada in foreign literatures. Dr Beeler was previously an instructor at the University of Calgary and the College of New Caledonia. He completed his PhD in comparative literature from the University of Alberta, and his MA and BA from Dalhousie University. He is interested in seventeenth-century literature and the application of technology to research and teaching in the humanities. Dr Beeler is also currently involved with issues relating to the Internet. He has written a book, articles and reviews, as well as computer programs. He is a member of several professional societies including the Association for Literary and Linguistic Computing, Canadian Comparative Literature Association, Modern Language Association and the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German.

ISSN 1201-317X With the publication of the Summer 2000 issue, Harpweaver, the literary journal published by Brock University's Department of English Language and Literature, is expanding to two issues a year. So those interested in reading the work of new and established writers can expect another volume of the usual fruitful melding of fiction, poetry, art, and critical analysis to enlighten the winter months. Turning the pages of the current issue, it comes as no surprise to discover poetry makes up the major content. There are well-known names such as James Reaney and Terrance Cox, and newer voices such as graduate student Matt Robinson. Canadian writers are the main contributors but there are also selections from those living in the United States, and some whose whereabouts are matters for deduction. Similarly there is no way of knowing, in most cases, if we are being introduced to recent work. We may assume the interview with Aritha van Herk is current in view of her inclusion in the 2000-2001 Harpweaver Reading Series, but Poetry Nation, an anthology reviewed in these pages, was published in 1998. Many readers appreciate being privy to a writer's development and growth, while understanding that getting published can take some time.

The course has a number of educational objectives: to sensitize students to the construction of knowledge through disciplines and the advantages/disadvantages of interdisciplinary study to give students the opportunity to learn in an experiential conference setting where a number of experts will speak about interdisciplinarity in the arts to introduce students to six Canadian artists from the visual and the literary arts and to study and compare them in a cross-disciplinary context. These artists will be compared primarily through the theme of regional identity in the arts, although other comparative themes and approaches will be discussed. Topics under discussion will include: the impact of 9/11 on Canadian Society, racism, Indigenous peoples, multiculturalism, and youth and ethnicity, as well as ethnicity and: politics, literature, the arts, religion, urban space, and others. This small conference will also afford participants ample opportunity for informal exchange and relaxation. Entertainment will include a Calgary Stampede-style Bar-B-Que on Friday evening, complete with live country music, line dancing lessons, and a traditional Aboriginal dance presentation.
