    Extractions: John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3rd, 1892 in Bloemfontein, Orange Free State in an area of what is now known as South Africa. His parents, Arthur and Mabel, were both English immigrants who met and married in Africa. Arthur had moved to manage a new English bank in Bloemfontein, a pioneer town and then, capital of the Orange Free State. Due to their weak constitution and inability to cope with both the climate and the animal life of Africa, in 1895 his parents decided that Mabel would take Tolkien and his brother, Hilary, back to England until they were strong enough to cope with Africa. Only a few months after they left Arthur was struck down by an illness and died. His mother died in 1904, she left the boys to the care of Father Francis Morgan, a priest at the Birmingham Oratory. Tolkien was taught Classics, Anglo-Saxon and Middle English at King Edward VI School. In March 1916 he married his childhood sweetheart Edith Mary Bratt while serving in the 11th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers. He survived the Battle of the Somme, where he was struck down by trench fever and invalided back to England. The Tolkiens had four children and it was for them that he first told the tale of The Hobbit , published 1937 by Sir Stanley Unwin. The Hobbit proved to be so successful that Sir Stanley was soon asking for a sequel: but it was not until 1954 that the first volume

With the movie coming out and all the hype, i think there are more than enough Tolkien/Middle-earth sites out at the moment. try the grey havens , an oldie and a goody. also take a look at the encyclopedia of arda. brad. Old News 27/7/01 - i've added more external links on all of the pages. 3/6/01 - there haven't been any updates for a while. please contribute articles, poetry, send questions etc. 20/12/00 - The entire site overhaul is now finished. 14/12/00 - I read at The Grey Havens , that on the first day of operation, there were 1.7 million downloads of the LOTR preview. That is a record for any film. Even Star Wars: Episode One hit only 1 million. 13/12/00 - After about a year, the site has finally been updated. There are a few new additions, changes etc., but mostly the format and content are the same. I would appreciate it if people would send me news concerning TLOR movie. The news on this site is around a year old. It will be updated in the next week or two.
