Extractions: Interview KATHARINE COLES IN THE PRESENCE OF AMERICA: A CONVERSATION WITH MARK STRAND An Interview with Mark Strand by Katharine Coles Mark Strand recently finished a year as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress and United States Poet Laureate. He was also recipient of the Utah Governer's Award in 1992 for outstanding achievement in the "Artist" category. He was born in 1934 on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and began his career as a painter, earning a bachelor's degree in fine art from Yale University. Nevertheless, he went on to earn an MA in English from the University of Iowa, and his first book of poems, Sleeping With One Eye Open, was published in 1964. During the following dozen years, he published four more books of poemsReasons for Moving (1968), Darker (1970), The Sergeantville Notebook (1973), and The Story of Our Lives (1973) as well as three books of translation18 Poems from The Quechua (1971), The Owl's Insomnia (Rafael Alberti, 1973), and Souvenir of the Ancient World (Carlos Drummond de Andrade, 1976). During that time, he also edited three anthologies, The Contemporary American Poets (1969), New Poetry of Mexico (1973, with Octavio Paz), and Another Republic (1976, with Charles Simic). The Late Hour, a book of poems, and The Monument, a collection of prose poems, were published in 1978. The 1980s saw the publication of two books on art, Art of the Real (1983) and William Bailey (1987), a first book of short stories, Mr. and Mrs. Baby (1985), and three books for children, The Planet of Lost Things (1982), The Night Book (1985), and Rembrandt Takes a Walk (1986), as well as a fourth book of translations, Travelling in the Family (Carlos Drummond de Andrade, with Thomas Colchie, 1986).

One of the greatest joys of reading a collection of 'selected poems' by a poet, is the ability to see the progression of a poet's style. Selected Poems by Mark Strand is a very well laid-out collection in that poems are grouped according to chronological order. The book was originally published in 1979, but was reissued in 1990 to coincide with the publishing of his book The Continuous Life and his selection as Poet Laureate of the United States for that year. By the time readers reach the final section of poems, it should be easy for them to see why Strand was chosen to be Poet Laureate. His poems achieve a wonderful depth of emotion without losing their slightly surreal quality. His poems are accessible to the average reader. He has no obscured agenda hidden under abstractions and enigmas.

Strand's lecture, "Mixed Doubles: Comparing Morandi and Bailey, Albers and Rothko, Avedon and Bacon," will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4 in the Lasansky Room of the UI Museum of Art. The following day, Saturday, April 5, Strand will read from his poetry at 8 p.m. in Room 101 of the UI Becker Communications Building. Both free events are sponsored by the UI Writers' Workshop. Strand, who was the U.S. poet laureate 1990-91, is the author of nine collections of poems, the novel "Mr. and Mrs. Baby," and acclaimed books on realism in art, about Edward Hopper and William Bailey. He is also one of America's most highly regarded translators, especially of Raphael Alberti and Carlos Drummond de Andrade. His work is known for precise language, the surreal and the recurring theme of absence and negation. Octavio Paz says of his work: "Mark Strand has chosen the negative path, with loss as the first step towards fullness; it is also the opening to a transparent verbal perfection. Made from fragile and changing words, the poem converts itself into the 'mirror in which pain is asleep.'"

His collection "The Blizzard of One" won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize. Responding to this collection, which has just come out in paperback, Deborah Garrison wrote in the New York Times Book Review, "There are a handful of contemporary poets whom we can consider only by gazing upward. . . . Mark Strand is undeniably one of these luminaries." His most recent book is "Weather of Words: Poetic Invention," a collection of writings about art and poetry published in February by Knopf. Strand has written 10 books of poems, which have brought him many honors and grants, including a MacArthur "genius grant" Fellowship. He is the author of a book of stories, as well as several volumes of translations, monographs on contemporary artists and books for children. He has also been the editor of several anthologies.
