In 1986, he joined the Centre for Information Technology, first on secondment then as Principal Consultant. This organisation became the NHS Information Management Centre and Adrian was promoted to Assistant Director, then to Director. His particular areas of responsibility included the NHS Information Standards Boards, "Requirements for Accreditation", "Standards Enforcement in Procurement" and, from 1995-98, managed the NHSs Y2K programme. He took early retirement in September 2000 to concentrate on consultancy work.

Extractions: During our study stay in the USA we came across a travel book called "Hungary" published in London, 1909, and written by English painters Adrian and Marianna Stokes. We were impressed by the 75 color full-page illustrations almost half of which were pictures of Slovakia of High Tatra region. The landscapes and portraits of the Tatra villages of Vazec, Mengusovce and Zdiar with their familiar countryside, folk architecture and costumes addressed us intimately. As the illustrations are unknown in Slovakia, we decided to make photographs of them and bring them home for those interested in seeing them too. Adrian and Marianne Stokes arrived in Slovakia in 1905. The High Tatras were their destination where they stayed about half a year. When they got to know the extraordinary beauty of the mountains they also visited neighboring towns and villages. They were most attracted to three villages: Vazec, Mengusovce and Zdiar-in which they spent majority of their time.

Extractions: The painter Adrian Stokes was born in Southport, and worked at a cotton broker in Liverpool until his artistic talents were noticed by John Herbert RA, who advised him to submit his drawings to the Royal Academy. He was subsequently able to enter the RA Schools in 1872. He exhibited at the Academy from 1876, and in that year went to France, settling back in England in 1886, at the artists' colony at St Ives. During his time in France, he married Marianne Preindlesberger, who became a well known artist under her married name Marianne Stokes Adrian Stokes was a landscape painter, concerned most with atmospheric effects, and later with decorative landscapes. His St Ives picture Uplands and Sky (1888) was bought under the terms of the Chantrey Bequest , and he had another Chantrey picture, Autumn in the Mountains , in 1903. He became ARA in 1909 and RA in 1919, and vice-president of the RWS in 1933. Landscapes by Stokes are in various collections, including Leeds, Manchester and Preston . Abroad

Extractions: Marianne Stokes "Mrs Stokes' aim is to build up, evolve, create some beautiful thing: a picture which shall be, in the broadest sense of the word, a piece of 'decoration' for a wall, harmonious and beautiful." [critic writing in 1900] Marianne Stokes was born in Southern Austria (Marianne Preindlsberger), and studied art under Lindenschmidt in Munich. While in that city, she had the good fortune and talent to win prize money left by a drawing master a hundred years before for the best Styrian art student a century after his death. Afterwards, financially independent, she made her way to France, studying under Dagnan-Bouveret, Courtois and Colin. Her first Salon picture, Reflection (1884) was shown the next year at the Royal Academy, and then in Liverpool, where it was purchased for the Museum and Art Gallery . Others of her early pictures are in Munich, Austria and America. In Pont Aven she met the English painter Adrian Stokes . They were married in 1884, and travelled considerably before settling in England at St Ives, Cornwall. Marianne Stokes exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy from the end of the 1870s through to the 1900s, and her work included portraiture and historical painting somewhat in the style of the later Pre-Raphaelites , though while at St Ives she was a member of the Newlyn School , and could be described rather as a colourist.
