    Extractions: period. The site of the old station was afterwards occupied by a fort of considerable strength, which was captured by the Scots under Colonel Stewart on the 20th of March 1644. The town was founded by the convent of Durham about the middle of the I 3th century, but on account of the complaints of the burgesses of Newcastle an order was made in 1258, stipulating that no ships should be laden or unladen at Shields, and that no shoars “or quays should be built there. Until the 19th century it was little more than a fishing station. J~n 1832 it received the privilege of returning a member to parliament, and in 1850 a charter of incorporation. The history of Southwark is intimately connected with that of the City of London. At an early date it was incorporated, and its familiar title of “ The Borough “ still survives. It came, at least in part, under the jurisdiction of the City in 1327. The citizens of London having suffered from the depredations of thieves and felons who escaped into Southwark, petitioned parliament for protection. Accordingly, Edward III., by letters patent, granted them for ever the town and borough, a privilege confirmed by Edward IV. In this connexion was constituted the Bridge Ward Without, the alderman of which is elected not by the borough, but by the other aldermen from among themselves. The authority of the City over the borough is now merely nominal. The junction in Southwark of the great roads from the south of England for the passage of the Thames sufficiently accounted for the early origin of Southwark. In 1580 he made his simple vows as a Jesuit, and in 1586 at his own request, desiring martyrdom as he said, he was sent to England with Father Garnett to minister to the oppressed Catholics. For six years he was active in the south of England as their pastor, but in 1592 he was arrested and imprisoned. After being tortured he was tried for treason, and on admitting his priesthood, he was hanged. His poetry is deeply religious, extolling the beauty and magnificence of the spiritual in contrast to the material. Southwell's major work is St. Peter's Complaint See his complete poems (1872, repr. 1971); biography by C. Devlin (new ed. 1967).

    Extractions: INTRODUCTION Sir Robert Southwell Papers A substantial volume, bound in the Middle Hill boards of Sir Thomas Phillipps' great collection, the collection contains an important series of letters regarding English Catholicism and the "Popish Plot." The letters, together with retained copies of answers, are addressed to British diplomat Sir Robert Southwell and concern Edward Coleman (who was unjustly accused of treason by Titus Oates) and a subsequent, but related, controversy with the great French Jansenist logician, Antoine Arnauld. In 1678, Titus Oates, a clever and bold perjurer, concocted and published charges that the English Catholics were about to assissinate King Charles II, subvert Protestantism in England, and reconvert the Country to Romanism by fire and sword. The charges were widely believed and caused a great panic. One of the first victims of Oates was Edward Coleman, tried and executed in 1678. He was the first of 35 persons executed on the testimony of Oates. One of the witnesses called in the trial was Sir Robert Southwell (1635 - 1702), a civil servant and diplomatist, whose testimony was generally favorable to Coleman. When it became obvious that the "Popish Plot" was a gigantic fraud, Antoine Arnauld (1612 -1694; then living in the Netherlands) wrote a book in defense of the English Catholics

In 1592, after six years of secret service to English Catholics, he was arrested. He was imprisoned and repeatedly tortured for three years, and hanged in 1595. His religious tracts, such as Mary Magdalen's Funeral Tears (pub 1609), were written before his imprisonment and probably fairly widely circulated in manuscript. Most of his poetry, which is concerned with the spiritual life, was composed while he was in prison. Saint Peter's Complaint was published anonymously in 1595 and followed shortly by Maeoniae, a supplementary volume A Fourfold Meditation of the Four Last Things was published in 1606. The Burning Babe , which was highly praised by Ben Jonson, is Southwell's best-known poem.

    Extractions: Malcolm Brennan STUDENTS OF ENGLISH literature know Robert Southwell, S. J., as a "sweet singer" of delicate and sensitive poetry. And while his life and writings show him to be a very gentle man and capable of exquisite and even dainty emotions, he is also to be seen as a man of tough determination and fearless constancy. Tender sentiments will not make an ordinary saint, much less a martyr. Born into an ancient and illustrious family in about 1560, Robert was stolen from his cradle by a gypsy or vagabond. He later reflected on the family tale: "What if I had remained with the vagrant? How abject! How destitute of the knowledge or the reverence of God! In what debasement of vice, in what great peril of crimes, in what indubitable risk of a miserable death and eternal punishment!" While the language is a bit theatrical, it should not be construed as an aristocrat's revulsion toward the lower orders; rather, it is a generous compassion for the spiritual dangers that afflict the destitute. For his education Robert was sent very early to the Continent and studied in Paris under Father Thomas Darby shire, the former archdeacon of Essex who, for conscience' sake had relinquished his considerable ecclesiastical preferments at the accession of Queen Elizabeth. Robert's vocation to the priesthood came early, as did his attraction to the Jesuits. Always an excellent student, he attended the English college at Douai, then the Jesuit novitiate in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1584.
