Extractions: Entomologist and conchologist. Traveled extensively through North America and published several important works. Came to Robert Owen 's New Harmony community, where he died in 1834. Officer in the French and Indian War, and Maj. General under Washington in the Revolution; operated generally successfully in the country around Ticonderoga, but allowed Ticonderoga to be lost, and lost his command. He demanded a court-marshall, was reinstated, and then resigned. Senator from NY, 1789-91. Wealthy landowner. His daughter Elizabeth married Alexander Hamilton , and he was very helpful in Hamilton's career; daugter Margaret married Stephen Van Rensselaer Produced an avalanche of romantic historical novels. Probably Jacksonian America's favorite novelist. Beloved by southern planters (horses named Rob Roy) were not uncommon, and New England transcendentalists ( Bronson Alcott kept a bust of Scott - the only modern so honored - in his experimental grade school that was run on transcendentalist principles). Extractions: In 1815, while enjoying the hospitality of Daniel Wadsworth, her kind and appreciative host by chance obtained possessio of some of Lydia's manuscript in prose and verse; he pronounced them worthy of publication, and under his auspices a volume was published entitled, "Moral Pieces in Prose and Verse." This was the first appearance in print of any of her productions. The public gave the little volume a generous welcome, and its success lead to a career of authorship that lasted nearly a half-century and resulted in the publication of fifty-six volumes of poetry, tales, novels, biographies and letters. When twenty-eight years old, she married to Charles Sigourney. for the next fifteen years she resided in the most elegant mansion in Hartford, her husband being a very successful merchant ot that place. She became the mother of several children, all but two of whom died in infancy. After years of prosperity, Mr. Sigourney met with heavy losses, and they were compelled to leave their pleasant residence and seek a home in a less pretentious part of the city. Mr. Sigourney died at the age of seventy-six. During the last seven years of her life Mrs. Sogourney's chief employment was contributing to the columns of the New York "Ledger." She died in June, 1865, after a brief illness, she having enjoyed excellent health up to a short time previous to her death. She contemplated the approach of death with great tranquility of mindand well she might; for, having spent her life in honorable labor for the benefit of her race, she could look upon her career with pleasure and satisfaction.

Extractions: Lydia Howard Huntley was born on September 1, 1791 in Norwich, Connecticut to Ezekiel and Zerviah (Wentworth) Huntley. She attended various local schools and female seminaries. In 1811 she opened a school for young women in Norwich. A friend of Mary Lyon's, Huntley often consulted the former for advice. In 1814 she moved to Hartford, where she ran another school, and in 1815 published her first book, entitled "Moral pieces, in prose and verse". She stopped teaching in 1819 because of her marriage to Charles Sigourney; however, she continued to write. Between 1840 and 1850 she published 14 volumes of poetry and prose. She had two children. She died on June 10, 1865 in Hartford, Connecticut. Scope and Content: Letters to Mary Lyon, principal of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, concerning Sigourney's visits to the school, offers of her books for its library and of financial support of a student. Other Links The following piece was written by Cleo Bohrofen and appears in the publication Our Place in History, 1844 to 1969, 125 years . This publication includes lots of history and pictures of Keokuk County and is available from the Keokuk County Historical Society for $1.00. History tells us that in naming localities and streams of water, discoverers and first settlers of America originated a plan of adopting Indian names. This plan was adhered to when the new county (Keokuk) was named. The Indians who dwelt in this particular locality were the Sac and Fox tribe. Their chief was Chief Keokuk, whose voice, was for peace with the white man. As an honor to this chief our county bears his name. Until the year 1837 the Indians held undisputed possession of the territory in Keokuk County. It was not till October 1837 that the red man first parted with his title to certain lands now comprised in the limits of Keokuk County, and the white man first obtained the right to gain a permanent foothold. By far the larger part of the county, however, remained in the hands of the Indians. It was not till October 1842, that the original possessors of this soil parted with their right to occupy it, and turned their unwilling steps to the far off and unknown regions west of the Missouri River. May 1, 1843, the whole of Keokuk County was thrown open to white settlement. Chief Keokuk lived but three years after leaving the Territory of Iowa. It is a concluded fact, by all the early settlers who knew him, that Keokuk possessed, in a prominent degree, the elements of greatness.
