Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Nevil Shute (1899-1960) - original name Nevil Shute Norway British-born Australian novelist, an accomplished storyteller, who best-known work, ON THE BEACH (1957), was adapted into screen in 1959. The picture became one of the most celebrated anti-Bomb films, and attracted much attention in Moscow because it was the first full-length American feature to have a premiere in the Soviet Union. Shute was educated as an aeronautical engineer and he used his expertise on technical issues and knowledge of aviation in his books. Also his novels PIED PIPER (1942) and A TOWN LIKE ALICE (1959) have been made into major films. "A beautiful aircraft is the expression of the genius of a great engineer who is also a great artist. It is impossible for that man to carry out the whole of the design himself; he works through a design office staffed by a hundred draughtsmen or more. A hundred minds, each with their own less competent ideas, are striving to modify the chief designer's original conception. If the design is to appear in the end as a great artistic unity, the chief designer must be a man of immensely powerful will, capable of imposing his idea and his way of doing things on each of his hundred draughtsmen, so that each one of them is too terrified to insert any of his own ideas." (from No Highway Nevil Shute was born in Ealing, Middlesex. His father was Arthur Hamilton Norway, C.B., an assistant secretary of the General Post Office in London, and his mother was the former Mary Louisa Gadsden. Shute was educated at schools in Oxford, Shrewsbury, and Woolrich. After witnessing the Easter Rising in Dublin, where he was a volunteer stretcher-bearer, Shute entered the Balliol College, Oxford. He spent the later stages of World War at military service and continued his in Oxford, graduating in 1922.

U.K. AIRCRAFT A somewhat abashed Nevil Shute sought out a university friend at A.P. Watt, the respected literary agent. They were acting at the time for Conan Doyle, Kipling and Edgar Wallace and it was they who persuaded Cassell to reconsider and publish the novel. Nevil Shute's adoption of his pseudonym also dates from the publication of "Marazan". At the time he was enjoying a fairly important job with Vickers, the aircraft company, and he judged that they might take exception to one of their employees indulging in fanciful novel-writing. So he adopted a nom-de-plume by simply omitting his true surname, Norway. At the beginning, Nevil Shute embarked on an aeronautical career as a calculator with the de Haviland Aircraft Co. Ltd. The itch to write was already upon him: perhaps Italy stimulated the poetical side of his writing ability, for he toyed with poetry for a while, but he found it too demanding. REWARD His ability to write novels continued undiminished despite his wartime duties, and increasingly he gained a following of admirers who read each new book avidly. He began to enjoy the reputation of being a storyteller of some worth. His books were not long or complex, their storylines were easy to absorb, but they made compulsive reading, as is shown in the sheer number of reprints published through the years.

Nevil Shute January 12 ) (real name Nevil Shute Norway) was one of the most popular novelists of the mid- 20th century . Born in London , Shute served in World War I and became an aviator. He was involved with the development of the airship and founded his own aircraft construction company. After World War II , he went to live in Australia , a country which features in many of his novels, the best-known being A Town Like Alice ). Many of his works were filmed, including The Pied Piper ) and No Highway ) (filmed as "No Highway in the Sky"). Although Shute's works are adventure novels, several have a supernatural element. His most ambitious book was probably On the Beach (1957), which is set in a post-atomic world. Although now rather dated, his works still enjoy great popularity.

The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. D o you remember On The Beach ? It was a wrenching, understated story told through the eyes of the last survivors of nuclear war, waiting to die in Australia. Thirty years ago, the best-selling book, and a fine movie based on it, made a disturbingly realistic case against the nuclear stalemate. The author was Nevil Shute Norway, born in England in 1899. He wrote under the name Nevil Shute. After serving in WW-I, he trained at Oxford to be an aeronautical engineer. From 1922 to 1933 he worked in airplane and dirigible companies. He also published his first four novels, one of which was made into a movie. He published nothing more until 1938. During that time he formed an airplane manufacturing company called Airspeed, Ltd. When he left the company to join WW-II in 1939, he'd built it up to a thousand employees. He went back to his books in 1938 and wrote roughly one a year until he died in Australia in 1960. Shute's books are low-key, but his plots are assembled like Swiss watches every piece fits perfectly, and you simply can't put one down after you're 50 pages into it. They also contain astounding technical realism far more than you'd think could hold his readers' attention, much less keep them spellbound.
