Z St. Irenaeus of Lyons, writing in the latter quarter of the second century, reckons him as the fifth pope in succession from the Apostles, though he says nothing of his martyrdom. His pontificate is variously dated by critics, e. g. 106-115 (Duchesne) or 109-116 (Lightfoot). In Christian antiquity he was credited with a pontificate of about ten years (Eusebius, Hist. Eccl. IV, i,) and there is no reason to doubt that he was on the "catalogue of bishops" drawn up at Rome by Hegesippus (Eusebius, IV, xxii, 3) before the death of Pope Eleutherius (c. 189). According to a tradition extant in the Roman Church at the end of the fifth century, and recorded in the Liber Pontificalis he suffered a martyr's death by decapitation on the Via Nomentana in Rome, 3 May. The same tradition declares him to have been a Roman by birth and to have ruled the Church in the reign of Trajan (98-117). It likewise attributes to him, but scarcely with accuracy, the insertion in the canon of the Qui Pridie , or words commemorative of the institution of the Eucharist, such being certainly primitive and original in the Mass.     Extractions: Born at Thonon, Savoy, France, 1435; died 1472; beatified in 1677. Amadeus, an epileptic, began his rule as the third duke of Savoy in 1455. His reign was such that he endeared himself to his subjects. His wife, Yolande, the virtuous daughter of the king of France, governed in his place when he was making devotions. Eventually, he was compelled to resign in favor of his wife, possibly because of the severity of his condition. Immediately after his death he was proclaimed a saint by his former subjects, and selected as the patron of the royal house of Savoy, of whom he was an ancestor (Attwater2, Benedictines, Encyclopedia). In art, he is portrayed as a prince dispersing alms, with a purse and scroll on which diligite pauperis is inscribed. He is invoked against epilepsy (Roeder). 5th century (?). Greek monk of the Benedictine abbey of Monte Cassino. The first includes the early descriptive poetry; the Pastorals Windsor Forest (1713); the Essay on Criticism (1711), a poem written in heroic couplets outlining critical tastes and standards; The Rape of the Lock (1714), a mock-heroic poem ridiculing the fashionable world of his day; contributions to the Guardian Montagu , with whom he later quarreled bitterly. Pope's second period includes his magnificent, if somewhat inaccurate, translations of Homer, written in heroic couplets; the completed edition of the Iliad (1720); and the Odyssey Fenton . These translations, along with Pope's unsatisfactory edition of Shakespeare (1725), amassed him a large fortune. In 1719 he bought a lease on a house in Twickenham where he and his mother lived for the rest of their lives. In the last period of his career Pope turned to writing satires and moral poems. These include The Dunciad Theobald , the critic who had ridiculed Pope's edition of Shakespeare, and the playwright Colley Cibber Imitations of Horace An Essay on Man (1734), a poetic summary of current philosophical speculation, his most ambitious work;

    Extractions: Christ's Faithful People ST. ALEXANDER I ca. 105 - 115 AD The next Pope was, according to the "Liber Pontificalis," a Roman named, like his father before him, Alexander. St. Alexander is said to have introduced into the Mass the prayer just before the Consecration which recalls the memory of Christ's passion. He is also credited with the order that houses should be blessed with water to which salt had been added. St. Alexander's death has caused confusion among scholars because an account of the death of another St. Alexander, who was not a bishop, tallies somewhat closely with the account of the Pope's martyrdom in the "Liber Pontificalis." Duchesne, the learned editor of the "Liber Pontificalis," concludes that there can be no certainty in the matter. The traditional account of St. Alexander's martyrdom is that he was beheaded on the Via Nomentana within seven miles of the city of Rome, along with Eventius, a priest, and Theodulus, a deacon. St. Alexander was buried on the Via Nomentana near the spot where he suffered. His feast, together with that of Sts. Eventius and Theodulus, is celebrated on May 3.
