As you see the house was built in 1786 and it is interesting in that it is built in a different way to the adjoining houses. I believe that the Weavers' cottages - nos 73-77 (originally 3 stories high) were built round about 1730. The house next door to us on the other side (no. 69a) was a barn, which was attached to the Ram - a pub covering nos 67 and 69. There was a gap between the barn and no. 73 for quite some time, and there is a doorway and a very worn step leading from our house to no. 69a, showing how much it was used over the years. Then for some reason a tenant farmer was needed to farm the fields across Stockport Road and our house was then built to accommodate him. The house was built between 69a and 73, using the exterior wall of the barn as one of ours. The outhouse at the rear of the property was obviously used as a dairy and the pantry still has the original meat hooks. The loft has magnificent hand made beams, which are, I believe, quite unique in the area. In June 1823 - using its name - Lydgate Church Farm - it was conveyed to the curates of the Curacy of Royton. It remained in their hands until 1901. I am not sure what the reason was for this transaction, although, as you see, many people were involved in it.

    Extractions: John Lydgate (c.1370-1449) was born in the village of Lidgate, Suffolk. In 1382, he entered the Benedictine abbey at Bury St. Edmunds as a boy and was ordained priest in 1397. He remained in the abbey for the rest of his life with short interruptions. He spent some time in London, Oxford and Paris and was prior of Hatfield Broadoak, Essex, from 1421-1432. He was an admirer of Geoffrey Chaucer and a friend of his son, Thomas Chaucer. Noble people like Henry V, Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, and Henry VI were his patrons. His work comprises well over 100.000 lines and shows a great variety in content and style: from long translations to brief occasional poems and a short prose work on Julius Caesar. He is best known for his translations from French and Latin, like The Troy Book The Pilgrimage of the Life of Man (1426) and T he Siege of Thebes , where he presents himself as a Canterbury pilgrim, who is asked by Chaucer's pilgrims to tell his tale. His indebtedness to Chaucer is shown in his allegories . e.g. The Temple of Glass (modeled on The House of Fame The Complaint of the Black Knight (after The Book of the Duchess His work was very influential and in the 15th century he was considered equal to Chaucer and Gower , but today he is especially criticized for his verbosity.

    Extractions: Lydgate had a consuming passion for literature, and it was probably that he might indulge this taste more fully that in 1434 he retired from the priorate of Hatfield Broadoak (or Hatfield Regis), to.which he had been appointed in June 1423. After 1390—bUt whilst he was still a young man—he made the acquaintance of Geoffrey Chaucer, with whose son Thomas he was on terms of considerable intimacy. This friendship appears to have decided Lydgate’s career, and in his Troy-book and elsewhere are reverent and touching tributes to his “master.” The passages in question do not exaggerate his obligations to the “ well of English.” The themes of all his more ambitious poems can be traced to Chaucerian sources. The Story of Thebes, for instance, was doubtless suggested by the “ romance which Cressida and her companions are represented as reading when interrupted by Pandarus ( Troilus and Cressida, II. xii.-xvi.). The Falls of Princes, again, is merely the Monk’s Tale “ writ large.” And half-changed Latin, with conceits of poetry.

A professed disciple of Chaucer, he was one of the most influential, voluminous, and versatile writers of the Middle Ages. His works may be divided into three classes: (1) poems written in the Chaucerian manner, such as the Complaint of the Black Knight, which resembles Chaucer's Book of the Duchess, and the allegory The Temple of Glass; (2) lengthy translations, of which the Troy Book (from the Latin of Guido della Colonna), The Fall of Princes (from the French of Laurent de Premierfait), and The Siege of Thebes (also from the French), are the best known; (3) short pieces, including fables, saints' lives, and devotional, philosophic, and occasional poems. After Lydgate's death his fame diminished rapidly. His poetry has been criticized for its prolixity and prosaic style. See his Poems, ed. by John Norton-Smith (1966); biography by L. A.
