I am a professor at the Computing Science Department at Chalmers University of Technology , and a member of the Functional Programming Group Fax, Postal address, etc. I am teaching a first year course in Haskell programming I introduced a course in Advanced Functional Programming , to teach senior undergraduates to solve substantial problems in Haskell. Course topics include lazy evaluation, design of combinator libraries, parsing and pretty-printing, monads and continuations. The course is taught in a `problem based' manner. I am teaching an undergraduate seminar course on Topics in Computer Languages I have prepared a one week intensive course for doctoral students on Program Specialisation , which has been given here at Chalmers University and at the University of Montevideo.

    Extractions: This paper dates from 1984, and circulated as a Chalmers memo for many years. Slightly revised versions appeared in 1989 and 1990 in the Computer Journal and the Year of Programming. This version is based on the original Chalmers memo nroff source, lightly edited for LaTeX and to bring it closer to the published versions. Please excuse the slightly old-fashioned type-setting, and the fact that the examples are not in Haskell! As software becomes more and more complex, it is more and more important to structure it well. Well-structured software is easy to write, easy to debug, and provides a collection of modules that can be re-used to reduce future programming costs. Conventional languages place conceptual limits on the way problems can be modularised. Functional languages push those limits back. In this paper we show that two features of functional languages in particular, higher-order functions and lazy evaluation, can contribute greatly to modularity. As examples, we manipulate lists and trees, program several numerical algorithms, and implement the alpha-beta heuristic (an algorithm from Artificial Intelligence used in game-playing programs). Since modularity is the key to successful programming, functional languages are vitally important to the real world. The paper is available as postscript and pdf , and here is a bibtex entry.     Extractions: John Nichols' transport to his new home John Nichols was born in 1755. In 1784 he was tried at the Old Bailey court in London for stealing hairdressing goods. He was was found guilty and sentenced to seven years transportation to Africa. Whilst waiting for his departure John was housed on the prison hulk Censor. Because of problems with the penal colony in Africa, Johns destination was changed to Botany Bay and he eventually set sail on the Scarborough, one of the First Fleet ships, on 13 May 1787. The First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788. Ann Pugh arrived in Sydney Cove on board the Earl Cornwallis on 12 June 1801. Ann had been found guilty of stealing and sentenced to seven years transportation. (Read a transcript of Ann's trial) By 1802 Ann was living with John. They married on 26 August 1803. They had Twelve children before John died on 24 December 1822. Ann passed away on 10 July 1849.
