The conquest of Ireland which Henry had projected in 1156 and for which he obtained a Bull from Pope Adrian IV (q.v.) was carried out later with the full sanction of Pope Alexander III, preserved to us in letters of unquestionable authenticity which concede in substance all that was granted by the disputed Bull of Adrian. The death of Henry was sad and tragic, embittered as it was by the rebellion of his sons Richard and John, but he received the last sacraments before the end came. "I think", says William of Newburgh, "that God wished to punish him severely in this life in order to show mercy to him in the next." All histories of England and notably LINGARD'S contain a detailed account of Henry's important reign, but Lingard's estimate of his character seems unnecessarily severe. Their marriage had been highly disapproved of by Sarah's parents on the grounds that Edmund was too poor and couldn't even manage what little money he did have but Sarah would listen to none of that. They had seven children before Sarah died . When Henry was twelve, his father remarried, an Italian woman who was rumored to be a Catholic who kept an eating-house . Henry had been raised (by his father, ironically enough) to really dislike Catholics, so you can imagine the atmosphere around that house. Henry's maternal grandmother eventually sued for custody of Henry and his siblings, and won. Surrounded by females and one much younger brother, Henry grew up wild and willful, not to mention prone to brawling At 21, Henry went to the continent to attend the University of Leiden in Holland, because it was much cheaper than any of the London schools. Eventually, though, he couldn't even afford Leiden and had to go back to London with all kinds of unpaid debts behind him . London was good to him, though...between the ages of 22 and 30, Henry managed to make quite a good living as a writer of farces and comedies

    Extractions: (click for enlarged image - 59k) Orphaned as a child, Henry Raeburn became apprenticed to an Edinburgh goldsmith at sixteen and soon after found his calling painting portrait miniatures. Raeburn seems to have been a largely self-taught artist. Although he studied in Rome from 1784 to 1786, his work and ambition were certainly more marked by the example of Sir Joshua Reynolds, whom he met in London before his departure for Italy. By the end of the late 1780s, Raeburn was well established as the leading portrait painter in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. His broadly brushed yet penetrating portraits commemorate many well-known figures of this notable period in his country's history, among them Sir Walter Scott. Carol D. Wyrick

Throughout the rest of his life he was to make many more trips, often holidaying for long periods of time. In 1908 he designed his own home, Betty Fold, near Hawkshead. At Burne-Jones' home aesthetic problems were discussed and exchanged by a group of artists, who pooled their ideas, and whose work had much in common.     Extractions: Between 1992 and 1994, nine young black women in Charlotte, North Carolina, were raped and strangled to death, the murders increasing in ferocity and rapidity. For almost two years the killer remained at large, causing what led to an angry hysteria in the city – especially within the predominantly minority community where the murders were occurring. Observed was a lack of adequate police patrolling in that area of town. However, the real reason that the murderer continued to run rampant was because the police were, simply, stumped. Understaffed and overworked – there were only seven full-time investigators on roll call at the time (there are now 25) – the force was not ready to face a serial killer who crept up out of nowhere. Though eager, determined, tough and professional, the police were not used to a psychopath whose motive could not be labeled and whose modus operandi was too sloppy to categorize. Each of the murders was treated separately, with a different investigator assigned to each one. Notes were not compared and the cases went, for a long time, unlinked. The city cops finally sought help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
