A best-selling poet in England and America, Felicia Hemans was regarded as leading female poet in her day, celebrated as the epitome of national "feminine" values. Hemans's Fame By the late 1820s, beset by budding poets seeking advice and support, by fans seeking autographs, inscriptions for their albums, or just a glimpse of the famous "poetess," Felicia Hemans was waxing wry and rueful about "the dust of celebrity," with more than a few of her letters and poems sighing of "the nothingness of Fame, at least to woman." Besonders Freiligrath bewunderte ihre Dichtung und hat große Teile übersetzt. In ihrer Zeit war sie besonders in Amerika eine sehr populäre Lyrikerin, die in ihren Gedichten ausgesprochenen einfachen und schlichten Gefühle trafen genau das romantische Empfinden des Zeitalters. Mit ihren kürzeren Gedichte kann sie durchaus überzeugen. Sie sind künstlerisch wertvoller als die längeren Dichtungen, in denen ihre Neigung zu einer ausschweifenden, wenig in die Tiefe gehende Geschwätzigkeit zum Tragen kommt. Neben der Lyrik versuchte sie sich auch in erzählenden Dichtungen und Hymnen. Mit " Die Vesper von Palermo " stammt auch ein Drama aus ihrer Feder.
