    Extractions: Robert Hass claims he was merrily going about his job of writing poetry when he was tapped by the Librarian of Congress to become the new United States Poet Laureate. He asked what the position entailed and was told "not much." What an understatement that turned out to be! Hass stayed almost continually on the road during his two-year term, not only fulfilling his official mandate "to raise national awareness of the importance of poetry," but also to speak out for all his connected issues. Poetry is a path to literacy which branches off into care of the environment, community ties, bold imagination, cures for poverty, and a host of other values Hass deems important. But each Poet Laureate has indeed been left to define and to defend his/her own role. The post was created in 1985 by an act of Congress, following a stormy history of the less prestigious title of Consultant in Poetry. Such poets as Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, and Stephen Vincent Benet graced the previous post, but some declined the dubious honor. Even Frost hesitantly accepted in 1958 with the condition he make only four visits to the Library. There were controversies such as that surrounding the attempt by the Fellows of the Library of Congress to offer Ezra Pound a poetry prize after he had been accused of treason.

Consider for a moment how many poets there are in the North Bay. Now consider how many of them will ever perform to sold-out crowds at $15 a ticket or more. That's the reality of modern poetry. Still, some time in the past few years, Americans began to embrace poetry with a newfound enthusiasm, eagerness, and even need. There's no one reason. You could chalk it up to soul-searching spurred by 9-11 (though the interest in poetry started before the tragedy); a proliferation of increasingly accessible poets; or the cresting of some kind of populist-poetry culture cycle. Both appear at the Luther Burbank Center on Nov. 1, as part of the Copperfield's Books Reader's Series.
