Having followed this man through several years and several shows, he only gets better. Maybe it is because I am mellowing and am more appreciative of country blues. Or maybe it is because my ear has been honed from over 17 years of blues festivals and I can finally discern the master craftsman that John Hammond is. They say that "you have to pay your dues if your gonna play the blues." It is evident from his music that John has paid his dues along the way. His music is as expressive as someone who grew up on a plantation, picked cotton, and suffered racial injustices. How he achieved this without actually living the experience is a mystery to me, but the fact is that John has done it. The proof is on his albums and in his performances. In fact, the project brings to mind that 1998 Woody Allen movie Celebrity , in which director Woody Allen hires the younger and much more bankable British actor Kenneth Branagh to play a character who exhibits all the neurotic mannerisms of . . . Woody Allen! But don't jump to conclusions Wicked Grin wasn't planned as a Waits tribute, it just happened that way.

As a producer, writer, critic, and board member of the NAACP, he was credited as a major force in integrating the music business. An early inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, John Hammond was one of the most important figures in 20th century popular music. Greenwich Village , where he engaged in the bohemian life and leftist subculture. Though privileged since birth, Hammond recognized the gross injustice of the time and began working for an integrated music world. He was the funder and DJ for one of the first regular live jazz programs, and wrote regularly about the racial divide. His main concern, however, was jazz, and throughout the 1930s he was responsible for both integrating the musicians and expanding the audience. Hammond breaks the music color barrier. Among the earliest musicians to work with Hammond were Fletcher Henderson, Bessie Smith, and Benny Goodman. When they began working together, Goodman’s band was completely white, and with the help of Hammond and great musicians like Teddy Wilson and Lionel Hampton, the color barrier began to fade. It was around this time that Hammond saw a young Billie Holiday perform. She was seventeen and Hammond thought she was one of the greatest singers he had ever heard. He began to write about her, and to introduce her to other musicians, including Teddy Wilson and Benny Goodman. Towards the end of the 1930s, Hammond organized the "Spirituals to Swing" concert, which brought much black music into the white spotlight for the first time.

Extractions: John Hammond was born into a wealthy family and attended Yale University. As a teenager, he became fascinated by black music and was drawn to the clubs and theaters of Harlem. He produced his first records in the early 1930s, and in 1933 recorded an important series of sessions for English Columbia featuring Fletcher Henderson , Benny Carter, and Benny Goodman , whose orchestra he helped to form in 1934; from 1935 to 1937 he supervised many of Teddy Wilson 's sessions for Brunswick with Billie Holiday as soloist. Hammond was also an early advocate of Count Basie , and was influential in bringing his orchestra to national prominence in 1936. In 1938 and 1939 he organized the two historic Spirituals to Swing concerts in Carnegie Hall. A tireless talent scout and champion of racial equality, he later furthered the careers of artists as varied as Charlie Christian (whom he teamed with Goodman in 1939), George Benson, the soul singer Aretha Franklin, the folk singer Bob Dylan, and the rock singer Bruce Springsteen. Although best known for his association with Columbia (1937, 1939-43,1959-75), Hammond also served in executive positions with Brunswick/Vocalion, Keynote, Majestic, Mercury, and Vanguard. From 1931 he wrote widely on jazz and popular music for music periodicals and the general press; he also published an autobiography, John Hammond on Record

Extractions: I've been a Hendrix fan since 1973. I first became "Experienced" in 1973 while in the Navy stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. A group of my shipmates had rented an apartment off base as a place to hang out, listen to music, and smoke dope away from eyes of the Naval Authorities. I'd stop by once in a while to visit but I didn't smoke dope.
