Extractions: The 8th earl of Abercorn, who was summoned to the Irish house of peers in his fathers lifetime as Lord Mountcastle, was created a peer of Great Britain in 1786 as Viscount Hamilton of Hamilton in Leicestershire, and renewed the familys connexion with Scotland by repurchasing the barony of Duddingston and later the lordship of Paisley. His nephew and successor was created marquess of Abercorn in 1790, and was father of James, 1st duke of Abercorn. The Hamilton estates had been declared forfeit by Cromwell, and he himself had been fined £1000. He supported Lauderdale in the early stages of his Scottish policy, in which he adopted a moderate attitude towards the Presbyterians, but the two were soon alienated, through the influence of the countess of Dysart, according to Gilbert Burnet, who spent much time at Hamilton Palace in arranging the Hamilton papers. London, Argonaut Press 1930 Two volumes, quarto, with plates and maps; uncut and partly unopened in original quarter vellum, one corner bumped, a little wear to cloth, but a good set. One of only 975 copies. Hamilton describes the natives, trade goods, weather, settlements, and many other features of his route from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan via India and Burma. Based on the first edition of 1727, this work "remains one of high value as a source of information; while its raciness, and the numerous anecdotes interspersed in the text, render it exceedingly attractive reading" (Preface). First edition of the WORKS and a very early edition, Sabin list only three earlier, of the FEDERALIST. 8vo, full contemporary American mottled calf, spine with gilt rules and red morocco lettering labels, gilt. vii,325; iv,368; iv, 368. Unusually fine copies, surprisingly well preserved for such an early American printing. The pages unpressed and quite fresh, bindings with some very minimal aging but far less then is usual for this period. Page 325, belonging at end follows the contents leaf. An extremely early printing of the FEDERALIST and quite scarce. The first volume of this work contains miscellaneous but highly important papers by Hamilton concerning his reports on a National Bank and the Constitutionality of the National Bank. Volumes Two and Three contain the FEDERALIST and PACIFICUS. Sabin notes that Williams also distributed this same printing with just volumes two and three with a different title-page and it is only the fourth printing of the FEDERALIST Sabin list. The papers in volume one are: The Report on Public Credit, on a National Bank, on the Subject of Manufactures, on the Constitutionality of a National Bank, and on the Establishment of a Mint.

No single figure was ever a stronger advocate of our Constitution; and only a few people have made a comparable contribution to the substance of American government. Because of his fame, few Americans have been as widely controversial as Hamilton. To this day, his importance remains unsurpassed in the areas of sharp finance, principled politics, romantic scandal, hard work, intellectual acuteness, and bravery. Hamiltons visage on the $10 bill is the only non-presidential face besides Benjamin Franklin to appear on our common currency. A chronology of his life Alexander Hamilton was born as a British subject on the island of Nevis in the West Indies on the 11 th of January 1755. His father was James Hamilton, a Scottish merchant of St. Christopher. His grandfather was Alexander Hamilton, of Grange, Lanarkshire. One of his great grandfathers was Sir R. Pollock, the Laird of Cambuskeith. Hamiltons mother was Rachael Fawcette Levine, of French Huguenot descent. When she was very young, she married a Danish proprietor of St. Croix named John Michael Levine. Ms. Levine left her husband and was later divorced from him on June 25, 1759. Under Danish law, the (the court ordering the divorce) Ms. Levine was forbidden from remarrying. Thus, Hamiltons birth was illegitimate. Alexander Hamilton had one brother, James Hamilton.

Extractions: Encyclopedia Hamilton, Alexander By 1780 Hamilton had outlined a plan of government with a strong central authority to replace the weak system of the Articles of Confederation Annapolis Convention (1786) that a constitutional convention be called at Philadelphia in May, 1787, and he was one of New York's three delegates when it was convened. Although he believed the Constitution to be deficient in the powers that it gave the national government, he did much to get it ratified, particularly by his contributions to The Federalist . In New York, Hamilton fought vigorously against the opposition of George Clinton to the Constitution, and he was perhaps the strongest advocate of the new instrument of government aside from James Madison In the first decade of the republic, Hamilton played a decisive role in shaping domestic and foreign policy. As Secretary of the Treasury under George Washington , he presented (1790) a far-reaching financial program to the first Congress. He proposed that the debt accumulated by the Continental Congress be paid in full, that the federal government assume all state debts, and that a Bank of the United States be chartered. For revenue, Hamilton advocated a tariff on imported manufactures and a series of excise taxes. He hoped by these measures to strengthen the national government at the expense of the states and to tie government to men of wealth and prosperity.

Extractions: HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Hamilton, Alexander US politician who influenced the adoption of a constitution with a strong central government and was the first secretary of the Treasury 178995. He led the Federalist Party, and incurred the bitter hatred of Aaron Burr when he voted against Burr and in favour of Thomas Jefferson for the presidency in 1801. Challenged to a duel by Burr, Hamilton was wounded and died the next day. Hamilton was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He was a strong advocate of the wealthy urban sector of American life and encouraged renewed ties with Britain, remaining distrustful of revolutionary France. In the cabinet, he soon came into conflict with Thomas Jefferson, who was secretary of state. Hamilton was for centralization of power, Jefferson was opposed to it. In 1766, after the father had moved his family elsewhere in the Leewards to St. Croix in the Danish (now United States) Virgin Islands, he returned to St. Kitts while his wife and two sons remained on St. Croix. The mother, who opened a small store to make ends meet, and a Presbyterian clergyman provided Hamilton with a basic education, and he learned to speak fluent French. About the time of his mother's death in 1768, he became an apprentice clerk at Christiansted in a mercantile establishment, whose proprietor became one of his benefactors. Recognizing his ambition and superior intelligence, they raised a fund for his education. In 1772, bearing letters of introduction, Hamilton traveled to New York City. Patrons he met there arranged for him to attend Barber's Academy at Elizabethtown (present Elizabeth), NJ. During this time, he met and stayed for a while at the home of William Livingston, who would one day be a fellow signer of the Constitution. Late the next year, 1773, Hamilton entered King's College (later Columbia College and University) in New York City, but the Revolution interrupted his studies. Although not yet 20 years of age, in 1774-75 Hamilton wrote several widely read pro-Whig pamphlets. Right after the war broke out, he accepted an artillery captaincy and fought in the principal campaigns of 1776-77. In the latter year, winning the rank of lieutenant colonel, he joined the staff of General Washington as secretary and aide-de-camp and soon became his close confidant as well.
