As his mother did so many years before, Davy vows never to go home again. Instead he sets off young and inexperienced, for New York City. Davy gradually learns to use and control his powers, first for sheer survival in an environment more violent and complex than he ever imagined. But mere survival is not enough for Davy. He wants to know if there are other people like him. He needs to know if his mother disappeared so completely from his life because she, too, could Jump. And as he searches for a trace of anyone else with powers like his own, he learns to use his abilities for more than escape and theft. A young man with nothing to lose, and the ability to go anyplace he wants, can help a lot of people. Extractions: on Science and Religion, July-August, 1999 Steven Jay Gould, a CSICOP Fellow, Alexander Agassiz professor of zoology and professor of geology at Harvard University ( "Non-Overlapping Magisteria," pp. 55-61), writes about his experiences explaining to Jesuit scientists and to one of his own students, how it is that there is really no conflict between evolution and religion. He then provides an enlightening analysis of statements about evolution made by Pope Pius XII (in 1950) and by Pope John-Paul II ( in 1996). But Gould firmly believes that science and religion should never conflict, because each occupies a separate "magisterium," or area of teaching authority, which does not overlap with that of the other. These "respective domains of professional expertise" are, for science, "the empirical constitution of the universe," and for religion, "the search for proper ethical values and the spiritual meaning of our lives." Besides being a serious misrepresentation of the nature of theory and its role in science, this passage reveals that Gould is apparently unaware of the existence of a wide range of scientific research bearing upon the meaning of beauty in art, in music, and even in human sexual relations. But this attempt to name yet a third "magisterium" is really the only justification he tries to give for dividing human inquiry into different areas of "teaching authority" and "professional expertise." As with all of the supporters of the idea that religion is the proper authority in the realm of ethics, the only justification seems to be that, due to millenia of historic precedent, it is supposed to be obvious and trivially true.

Extractions: a scientist for the people Died 20 May 2002 The Spark 9 June 2002 T he death of Steven Jay Gould, outstanding American Palaeontologist and author, was greeted with great sadness around the world. Gould was not only an outstanding figure in the scientific community but was known to millions who read his beautifully crafted and thought-provoking books on evolution. An extraordinarily prolific writer, Gould used his talents and encyclopaedic knowledge to serve the interests of humanity. He fought dogmas in science, and battled against bigotry, racism and sexism in society. Having contracted cancer at the age of 40 Gould seemed to have beaten the disease until it returned and took his live at the age of 60. He was not afraid to stand up against establishment dogmas and early in the 1970s, along with Niles Eldredge, developed a theory of evolution which accounted for the apparent gaps in the fossil record. The theory was Punctuated Equilibrium, which held that the evolutionary process was not one of continuous, slow and gradual change, but that long periods of almost imperceptible changes were punctuated by sudden leaps, where change would be relatively rapid and give rise to new features and new species. Darwin believed that gaps in the fossil record were bridged by missing links, and that with time the missing fossils would be found and the pieces of the jigsaw would fit together in a more-or-less smooth continuum. While new fossil finds did fill some of the gaps sudden leaps could be seen in the record and demanded explanation. Gould and Eldredges Punctuated Equilibrium held that climatic and environmental influences led to substantial changes and leaps into new forms. Gould also rejected the notion that natural selection only operates at the level of genes. He argued that natural selection took place at the level of species and populations too. Punctuated Equilibrium won the endorsement of some outstanding scientists such as leading geneticist Richard Lewontin. Gould had his detractors too, most notably the British geneticist and ultra-Darwinian, Richard Dawkins, also a widely published author best known for his book

What, in your opinion, is the major stumbling block? A: Deep time is hard to grasp. I don't know that it or any one thing could be called "the" major stumbling block. The major stumbling block is that we're not quite ready, because we live in a veil of tears, and we know that bad things happen to good people. We're still desperate, many of us, to find factual answers out there that would make us feel better in a psychological sense about some of the cruel things that don't make sense in life. And that's a very hard one to get through, I think. Once you come to terms with the recognition that the answers to moral questions aren't out there in nature, and you shouldn't be seeking them there, you have to seek them inside yourself and that is the proper role of religion and humanities then it ceases to worry. But it does worry many people. And since it does, there are a whole set of issues that then become very hard to accept, one of which is that most organisms are bacteria. And there isn't a linear progressive pattern that pervades evolution leading up to humans. Another is that humans are a tiny little twig representing one species among so many millions on this enormous arborescent tree of life. Extractions: When my manager at Walden Books insisted that I pull all the copies of Jumper from the shelves for questionable content and box them up to be returned to the publisher, I couldn't help but move this book to the top of my reading pile. I knew nothing about the book except its title, which immediately suggested that Jumper dealt with suicide. That proved to be the very least of it. Jumper begins, on the very first page, with an act of child abuse. Thankfully, before Davy Rice's drunken father does considerable physical damage to his motherless son, Davy teleports for the first time from the scene of the crime to his favorite spot, the public library. Davy makes his second "jump" to escape homosexual rape at the hands of a perverted trucker who offers the runaway a ride. And all this occurs by page eight! Reading on, I became wrapped up in the story of a 17-year-old runaway who survives life on the street. I don't agree with some of Davy's methods of survival, but the situations he found himself in didn't offer many choices. In the fantasy world Steven Gould creates, I see Davy's actions as plausible and possible. As a result, alongside Davy, I enjoyed an exciting adventure filled with romance, mystery, tension and a satisfying ending.

SG: In parallax (since Laura is describing it from her computer) I'd call it your average boy meets environment, boy loses environment, boy blows up environment sort of story. LJM: GREENWAR is about the clash of different ideologies or idealisms, if you prefer. And it's our fantasy of what a sustainable energy source might be like, what sorts of problems a young, energetic company might run into as it tries to buck the trend. Hmmph! What about =girl= meets environment SG: It's probably significant that the full title, or title/description on the cover goes: GREENWAR, an environmental thriller. Extractions: The protagonist of the story, seventeen year old Davy, is an incongruously intelligent whiner who cries three times in the first four pages, four times by page ten. Wonder what will happen next, turn the page, and you can bet it will be soaked with Davy's tears. The plot quickly becomes an exercise in wondering whether moisture will be averted... tune in next chapter, to see whether Davy will cry... or... merely well up with tears... It's odd... The boy is considering the possibility of his own "irrational psychosis" by page 22. Later, our hero of seventeen is tossing around terms like "debt relief". Somewhat later, the author is explaining what a yarmulke is. Instead of a tale that will 'please young and old alike', it's a book that could only be written for adults, lapses into a pedantry that some people reserve for children, and is bound to satisfy neither. By then, Davy has cried three more times.

Earth lacked the resources to set up a high-tech colony, so instead they used "imprinters" transparent helmets that download information and behavior patterns directly into the brain to force the founding colonists into the habits of hygiene, nutrition, and literacy necessary for the survival of a low-tech colony. Four centuries later, several feudal kingdoms are thriving on Agatsu and battling over fertile land. The last imprinter, known as the Glass Helm, sits atop a three hundred meter high rock spire called the Needle. Leland de Laal, the youngest son of the Steward of Laal province, climbs the Needle in defiance of his father's law to reach the Helm and set it upon his head. The Helm burns a black hole into Leland's mind. He can't examine the hole directly without risking his sanity, but fascinating things start to leak out of it: arcane knowledge, martial arts, and sarcastic comments. Helm revolves around aikido, both in combat and as a way of life. It's easy to tell who the good guys are: anyone who practices aikido can be trusted.

On the other side of the hidden door in his dead uncle's Texas ranch, the bison still roam, as do mastodon and sabretooth tigers and bears (oh my). With the help of four newly-graduated high school friends, Charlie plans to use the gate to become very, very rich. To fund his scheme, he traps and sells twenty passenger pigeons at extortionate prices, but the sudden appearance of extinct birds doesn't go unnoticed. While Charlie and his friends are hauling and hammering and flying and skydiving and camping on the other side of the gate, the Feds are tracking them down. The relationships among the main characters resemble a soap opera at times, but I suppose that's inevitable when you cram five teenagers and their hormones into a single plot, and Wildside is mercifully free of the armchair psychoanalysis that irritated me in Gould's first novel, Jumper . Gould also refrains from environmentalist chest-beating, rather to my surprise.
