Though both works are intended to emphasize a musical score, Dracul emerges as the more attractive of the two. Gioia’s text Nosferatu is a libretto for an opera based on F.W. Murnau’s well-known silent film of the same name. Written for the neo-romantic composer Alva Henderson, the opera has yet to be widely performed, and so all that is available to the reader is simply the text, black and white upon the page. With this silence inherent in the lack of a score, and those constraints inherent in the libretto genre (very compressed texts), the reader must draw from Murnau’s own silent, black and white, anemic portrayal of Count Orlock for inspiration. Kilpatrick’s work, however, can be purchased with the accompanying CD of songs from the musical which inspired the novel, which by virtue of its literary form can be more encompassing and comprehensive. The Devil’s Party: A Review of Dana Gioia's "Nosferatu" return to crucat Nosferatu Like many Americans born near the middle of the Twentieth Century, I first encountered the idea of a vampire by watching early television reruns of Bela Lugosi in Dracula Despite the success of recent actors in redepicting Dracula, the performance of Bela Lugosi has always retained my affection. Like Lon Chaney in Phantom of the Opera Nosferatu Libretto is an unfamiliar medium for English-language authors. Other than W. H. Auden, no modern poet of note has taken much interest in writing for music. Broadway does have an accomplished lyricist in Stephen Sondheim, though he is generally regarded as a composer first, versifier second. Choosing words for music, a poet must alter several of the usual criteria for composition. Expression must be simple and direct. Charged poetic language is difficult for a performer to sing or an audience to comprehend in a musical setting, where the least strain or perplexity would undermine the emotional effect so necessary in opera. Strong sentiments are also requisite, and these are unfashionable among modern poets.

Gioia, 51, became well known after publishing an influential essay in The Atlantic entitled "Can Poetry Matter?" In the essay he challenged the status quo of poetry in academia, arguing that many writing programs failed to help poets connect with the larger culture.
