Extractions: I was in my teens when I read Naipaul's essay on how, in the Trinidad of his youth, the flowers of the Caribbean were rendered invisible by the unseen daffodils of text-book English poets. That essay sparked so powerful a jolt of recognition that the moment has stayed with me ever since. As a child, while reading The Mutiny on the Bounty I'd been fascinated by the word 'frangipani' which seemed to me to be redolent of all that was mysterious, desirable and secret. Then one day I discovered that the gnarled old branches by my window belonged to none other than a 'frangipani' tree: I'd been staring at them for years. My response was neither shock nor disappointment: it was rather a sudden awareness of the anomalousness of my own place in the world. This was not an awareness I had ever seen reflected in anything I'd read - until I came across Naipaul's essay. This was the magic of reading Naipaul in those years. His views and opinions I almost always disagreed with: some because they were founded in truths that were too painful to acknowledge; some because they were misanthropic or objectionable; and some because they came uncomfortably close to being racist or just plain ignorant (the last, particularly, in his writings on the Islamic world). Yet he was writing of matters that no one else thought worth noticing; he had found words to excavate new dimensions of experience.

Contact us Iaclals Newsletter Jul 2001 Amitav Ghosh's letter to the Commonwealth Foundation I have recently learnt that my novel, The Glass Palace , has been named the Eurasia regional winner for the 2001 Commonwealth Writers Prize. I gather that this means that it is also a finalist for the overall contest, to be held in April. I am of course, gratified to know that the jury liked my book. Yet, I must admit that the announcement took me by surprise for I was not aware that my book had been submitted for the Commonwealth Prize. I have since discovered that publishers routinely submit books for prizes without expressly consulting their authors. I have on many occasions publicly stated my objections to the classification of books such as mine under the term 'Commonwealth Literature'. Principal among these is that this phrase anchors an area of contemporary writing not within the realities of the present day, nor within the possibilities of the future, but rather within a disputed aspect of the past. In this it is completely unlike any other literary term (would it not surprise us, for instance, if that familiar category 'English literature' were to be renamed 'the literature of the Norman Conquest'?). As a grouping of nations collected from the remains of the British Empire, the Commonwealth serves as an umbrella forum in global politics. As a literary or cultural grouping however, it seems to me that 'the Commonwealth' can only be a misnomer so long as it excludes the many languages that sustain the cultural and literary lives of these countries (it is surely inconceivable, for example, that athletes would have to be fluent in English in order to qualify for the Commonwealth Games).

At fifty-five years of age, he can't be classed with the younger crop of writers who are snatching up Booker Prizes and Pulitzers. And unfortunately for Ghosh, his competition on the senior circuit is pretty stiff; despite Ghosh's consistent production of polished and insightful work, the flashier Salman Rushdie seems to snatch up most public attention. Internationally, Ghosh has managed to establish himself in both critical and popular circles; his latest novel, The Glass Palace , has garnered literary prizes and (perhaps oddly) is a best-seller in Germany. But beneath this colorful exterior run deep currents of conscience, lending the novel extra dimensions. Two lovers are the glue binding together a massive century-long sweep of story, from the British invasion of Burma (now Myanmar) in the late 1800s through the chaos of two World Wars to the age of e-mail and the Internet. The novel opens in 1885 with an ominous rumbling sound, "unfamiliar and unsettling, a distant booming followed by low, stuttering growls." A versatile writer, he has tried his hand at travel writing, science fiction and now a historical novel. As a storyteller Ghosh is at least at par with Vikram Seth and Michael Ondaatje. The Glass Palace is loosely based on the military career of the writer's father and an uncle's life as a trader in Burma; both inspired the author to set a novel in various British possessions in Asia. It relates the interconnected experiences of three families in Burma, India and British Malaya, covering the period from 1885 to the present. Starting with the fall of the Burmese capital Mandalay to a British expeditionary army, it depicts the exile of Thibaw, last King of Burma, with a small entourage of courtiers. Considered one of the most dramatic events in Burma's recent history, we witness the episode through the eyes of two orphans: one is Rajkumar, a Bengali deckhand turned dishwasher, the other Dolly, a 10-year-old Burmese girl serving as a maid to Queen Supayalat, the wife of the deposed monarch. His silver hair glistens in the faint light and the breeze tugs at his kurta sleeves. The world-famous writer is in an expansive mood to talk. "I always dreamt of becoming a writer," says Ghosh, 45, who is on a visit to Kerala, where he started his academic career as a 'visiting fellow' at the Centre for Development Studies. "In Bengali culture writing is greatly valued and that was my inspiration." He turned out to be one of the finest Indian writers in English, with five novels, two non-fiction books and several essays to his credit in just 15 years. His first book, The Circle of Reason (1986), won France's top literary award, Prix Medici Estranger, and was the New York Times Notable Book of the year 1987. His next book, The Shadow Lines, won the 1990 Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award and the Ananda Puraskar; The Calcutta Chromosome bagged the Arthur C.
