Community members are invited to join WDKX and Garth Fagan Dance to provide scholarships to 60 of Rochester's children to attend the world-acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance School simply by contributing $1.04 to the WDKX Dance Scholarship Initiative. This is an excellent opportunity for Rochester to support its own. The WDKX Dance Scholarship Initiative is to be held in conjunction with the Rochester Music Fest, which includes a free performance by world-renowned Garth Fagan Dance Tuesday, July 16 at Manhattan Square Park. Also performing are the children of the Garth Fagan Dance School and the Gray Mayfield Trio. Envelopes will be distributed at the performance to collect $1.04 to provide scholarships to GFDS. According to Garth Fagan, the Founder/Artistic Director/President of GFD, dance education is an invaluable asset to childhood development. He grew up in Trinidad's multi-racial society and graduated from San Fernando's Naparima College in 1938. Selvon began writing fiction and poetry while he served in the Royal Navy Reserve during World War II. After the war, he began his literary career as the fiction editor of the TRINITY GUARDIAN'S literary magazine until he immigrated to England in 1950. In London, his short stories and poetry were published in various journals and newspapers, including LONDON MAGAZINE, NEW STATESMAN, and THE NATION. His first novel, A BRIGHTER SUN, was published by Wingate Press in 1952, and since then he has published several other novels, including THE LONELY LONDONERS (1956), I HEAR THUNDER (1963), THE PLAINS OF CARONI (1970), MOSES ASCENDING (1975), and EL DORADO WEST ONE (1988). Selvon's works chronicle the West Indian experience in England with recurring themes of alienation, discrimination, and racial tension. Selvon has also had success with his writings for other media. Extractions: Ahhh " Star Wars ", at this juncture many a reviewer would be telling you how the original trilogy was such an important part of inspiring them to get into the film business and how those films have more than any other been a key part of their lives - but I ain't like that folks. Being born a year AFTER the first one hit the cinemas, the entire SW craze happened long before my time and it wasn't till about 1991 when I'd just turned 13 that I sat down and watched them. To this day I think 'New Hope' is glorious fun, 'Empire' is a truly wonderful film, and despite a few flaws related to walking carpets 'Jedi' is still a solid movie. They are among my Top 50 or so films of all time, but they're still just films - I love them for the entertainment and story but as for their personal impact, well the late 80's/early 90's works of James Cameron, John McTiernan and Paul Verhoeven had more of an inspiration on me to write about film than the Lucas epics.
