Excerpt: Laurens (Luud) Maria Hendrikus Schimmelpennink (born in Amsterdam, 27 May 1935) is a Dutch social inventor, industrial designer, entrepreneur and politician. As of 2007 he is Managing Director of the in Amsterdam. Schimmelpennink first came into public view in the early 1960s through his association with the Dutch Provo counterculture and the White Bicycle Plan. Since the mid 1960s Schimmelpennink has been active as an industrial designer and social innovator, with special focus on sustainable transportation concepts. His work aims to both reducing the number of conventional motor cars in cities or urban areas for environmental and public health reasons, and provide people with viable alternative means of getting around in the city. Luud Schimmelpennink emerged on the Dutch social political scene as the main person behind the famous 1965 White Bicycle Plan in Amsterdam, whereby he and colleagues collected several hundred bikes, painted them white, and left them around the city to be freely used. This initiative, called the White Bicycle Plan, originally existed as one in a series of White Plans proposed in the street magazine and youth movement Provo. The Dutch Provos were, by the standards of the times, a radical group that thought to provoke the establishment with playful demonstrations. On 22 February 1967 Schimmelpennink was elected to the Municipal Council of the City of Amsterdam, but was unable to get the needed political support for his White Bicycle Plan. However, the basic model that Schimmelpennink and his colleag...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8702931 ... Read more

Excerpt: Pieter Cornelis "Piet" Mondriaan, after 1912 Mondrian (Dutch pronunciation: , later ; March 7, 1872 February 1, 1944), was a Dutch painter. He was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neo-Plasticism. This consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors. Mondrian's birthplace in Amersfoort, Netherlands, now The Mondriaan House, a museum.Mondrian was born in Amersfoort in the Netherlands, the second of his parents' children. He was descended from Christian Dirkzoon Monderyan who lived in the Hague as early as 1670. The family moved to Winterswijk when his father, Pieter Cornelius Mondriaan, was appointed head teacher at a local primary school. Between his 1905 painting 'The River Amstel' and his 1907 'Amaryllis', Mondrian changed the spelling of his signature from Mondriaan to Mondrian. Mondrian was introduced to art from a very early age: his father was a qualified drawing teacher, and with his uncle, Fritz Mondriaan (a pupil of Willem Maris of The Hague School of artists), the younger Piet often painted and drew along the river Gein. After a strictly Protestant upbringing, in 1892, Mondrian entered the Academy for Fine Art in Amsterdam, already qualified as a teacher. He began his career as a teacher in primary education, bu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4865795 ... Read more

Excerpt: Design Academy Eindhoven is a school for industrial design in Eindhoven, Netherlands. The work of its faculty and alumni have brought it wide recognition and success in the 21st century, when it was called the "best design academy in the world." The Design Academy Eindhoven was established in 1947 and was originally named the Academy for Industrial Design Eindhoven (AIVE, as in Akademie Industriële Vormgeving Eindhoven). In 1997, the Academy moved into "De Witte Dame" (The White Lady) building and subsequently changed its name to Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE). In 1999, Li Edelkoort, a famous trendforecaster, was elected chairwoman of the Academy. The Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) and Dutch design in general are gaining excellent international reputations. The academy's emphasis on creativity and practical industrial design is attracting students from around the world. Ninety percent of graduates get jobs in the design world. Mayers Moss, owner of the design store Moss in Manhattan, called the academy "without question, currently the best design academy in the world".. Designs for furnishings have been popular at both high and low prices. Several alumni are now designers for the well-known design collective "Droog Design" and furniture maker "Moooi", as well as the wide-ranging Swedish company Ikea. Product Description
This is a monograph on the work of the practicing Dutch architect, G. Rietveld. He began his career as a cabinetmaker in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and later expanded his activities to include architecture. Largely self-taught, he developed his work from the small scale of tables and chairs to large buildings and groups of buildings. He is known primarily for his significant role in the De Stijl movement, Holland's great contribution to 20th-century design. But the scope and influence of Rietvald's work extends far beyond this movement.

The Work of G. Rietveld, Architect, is a study of the architect's total production, ranging from small lamps and typography to large industrial buildings and housing. His work is presented in a text consisting of about 150 pages, illustrated by about 200 photographs, two of which are in color. An illustrated catalogue of about 150 pieces and a complete bibliography of Rietveld's work and writing provide a factual documentation of this important body of work. The architect's theoretical position is revealed in translations of two of his articles, one hitherto unpublished.

A full chapter is devoted to the Schröder House, built in Utrecht in 1924. This building represents both an important forward step and a summing-up of the modern movement at this point in its development, in that it embodies in the purest essential form that movement's striving for simplicity of design combined with maximum flexibility of space.

Illustrative and critical material are presented chronologically so as to convey the scope, quality, and development of the architect's work, which is analyzed from both a critical and historical point of view. He is seen in this study as a powerful and independent artist, one of the first rank in 20th-century design. ... Read more

Product Description
With Lenneke Büller, Frank den Oudsten, and Bertus MulderThe Rietveld Schröder House incorporates a variety of perspectives to unite the client, architect, and structure in a rare complete document of a living landmark.Newly restored and open to the public, the small semi-detached house on the outskirts of Utrecht was the prototype of a style that was one of the most reproduced and influential of any domestic building of the early modern period. It was constructed in 1925, the first complete building designed by Gerrit Rietveld, a Dutch designer who began his career as a craftsman and who later became identified with the De Stijl group. Two remarkable series of photographs by Frank den Oudsten record the house as it was shortly before Mrs. Schröder's death and as it is today after restoration. These form a clear comparative record of the way in which the house was changed to fulfill the client's different needs. Den Oudsten's color photographs, supplemented with many black and white archival photographs dating from the early years of the house, show Rietveld's mastery of a fresh design syntax an open plan, interlocking planes and colors, built in furniture, sculpture like storage units that was thoroughly modern then and remains crisp and vital today.Paul Overy analyzes the project in light of today's shifting attitudes toward modernism and in relation to the De Stijl group of artists and architects. Among the book's revelations is an interview with Mrs. Schröder who commissioned the house and continued to live in it until her death in 1985 at the age of 95. In this personal account she reveals that as a recent widow and mother of three children she wanted a house that would demonstrate how to live a new kind of life in the 20th century. Her house was a declaration that an independent modern woman intended to live informally and without ostentation, among objects that were at once functional and aesthetically significant. The recent, careful restoration described here was carried out by Bertus Mulder, a friend of Mrs. Schröder and former employer of Rietveld. Paul Overy is a well known architectural critic and the author of De Stijl. He is Lecturer in History of Art and Design at the London Institute. ... Read more
