She was a near contemporary of better-known American artist Mary Cassatt and also received her training in Philadelphia and France. Her sympathetic renderings of American ruling class made her one of the most successful portrait painters of her era. Cecilia Beaux was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the youngest daughter of French silk manufacturer Jean Adolphe Beaux and teacher Cecilia Kent Leavitt, daughter of prominent businessman John Wheeler Leavitt of New York City and his wife Cecilia Kent of Suffield, Connecticut. Cecilia Kent Leavitt died from puerperal fever twelve days after giving birth at age thirty-three. Cecilia Leilie Beaux and her sister Etta were subsequently raised by their maternal grandmother and aunts, primarily in Philadelphia. Her father, unable to bear the grief of his loss, and feeling adrift in a foreign country, returned to his native France for sixteen years, with only one visit back to Phila...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6881 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars About the Hardcover Edition of this Book...
This book was first released in 1980 by Harmony Books and the quality of the illustrations here is superior to the later Random House Value Publishing release.

Red cloth over boards with gold print in a sewn binding; issued with dustjacket. 192 pp, 2.5 pounds. 163 color plates. After the images there is a 42 page catalogue raisonne which is certainly not as detailed as a catalogue raisonne found from an academic publisher, but which offers much helpful information.

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Alphonse Maria Mucha, first name from the Czech Alfons (24 July 1860 - 14 July 1939), was a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist, best known for his distinct style and his images of women. He produced many paintings, illustrations, advertisements, and designs. Mucha spent many years working on what he considered his life's fine art masterpiece, The Slav Epic, a series of twenty huge paintings depicting the history of the Czech and the Slavic people in general, bestowed to the city of Prague in 1928. He had dreamt of completing a series such as this, a celebration of Slavic history, since he was young. Since 1963 the series has been on display in the chateau in Moravský Krumlov the South Moravian Region in the Czech Republic. ... Read more

Excerpt: William-Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 August 19, 1905) was a French academic painter. William Bouguereau (French pronunciation: , vill-yam boo-guh-roe) was a traditionalist whose realistic genre paintings and mythological themes were modern interpretations of Classical subjects with a heavy emphasis on the female human body.
