4-0 out of 5 stars Naming of America
Wonderful complement to Toby Lester's Fourth Part of the World. The Line of Demarcation was just a temporary fix. Political pressure won and, had it not been for this single map, America would be called Columbia!

This book has the 12 sections of the original map that appeared in as a book, with explanations of3 dimensional projections(these will be familiar to astronomers).

Latin to English translations of the original instructions (only the elite could afford such a book with maps) are very helpful.

I cannot wait to see the original displayed at the Library of Congress. Until then, this book is a nice substitute. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars buy this book- it's great for neuroanatomy!
everyone i spoke to says that neuro is one of those classes you have to teach yourself- couldn't have been more true at my school. this book saved me.it clearly presents the topics in as simple a way as possible, and has great summaries.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Really acceptable"
First functional then regional anatomy, not a bad idea. Makes u hard to forget, good "real" diagrams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you
I really enjoyed the book and it was in great condition when it arrived

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for the Neuroanatomy student
The text of this book is quite easy to read, as medical textbooks go, and the figures in this book are excellent and easy to follow. A wonderful feature of this book is the double-page organization of the atlas portion showing brain sections. For each section, the left-hand page is an unmarked full-page photograph of the section, and the right-hand page is the same photograph with labels and borders drawn around the structures. This is much more helpful than the traditional approach that simply has a line pointing to a structure, for this approach shows the size, shape, and limits of the structure as well as its location. The unmarked photographs allow you to test yourself. I highly recommend this book for Neuroanatomy students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource...
Excellent book on review of the Old and New Testament. It gives a much better understanding of the bible than just reading the many different versions of the bible that is available. The maps and pictures and drawings really bring the point home of exactly what the purpose was for certain events. This book links the story of God and his salvation for everyone, page by page, turn by turn.I read the entire book in about 3 days...could not put it down...so easy to understand...that is why I recommend this to anyone. It also helps foster my relationship with God in a better understanding.I understand the bible in a whole new way after reading this book.I'm actually starting to read it again from the beginning...it's such a good book.I recommended it to my twin brother because, admittedly, the Old Testament can get rather tedious to read. This book is kind of like the Cliff Notes for the Old and New Testament.

LOVE IT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading this book is the next best thing to travel.
This is an outstanding book that combines the story of the Bible with geography and pictures of the places where it happened, particularly noting that things happened where they did for a reason. This engaging book with maps, pictures and Scripture references is the next best thing to traveling with James Martin, one of the authors, through Israel, Jordan, Egypt and other Bible lands. The book helped me appreciate, relive, and share my travels.
What an excellent resource for Sunday School teachers and for anyone who wants to understand the geography, culture and people of the Bible better! The story of God's plan of redemption shines clearly as connections are made among many Bible events that occurred in the same location over time.
Highest praises for the authors, photographers and publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Visual Guide To Biblical Events
I am totally thrilled with the purchase of this book. It has amazing facts, and maps of the regions where Biblical events took place. Not only does it give a chronological history of the land of Israel, but gives reasoning attached to events. It is biblically correct. It has enhanced my knowledge of all of Israel, from Creation to Armegeddon.

Coincidently we leave for Israel in the morning...I'd love to take it with me, but it's a bit heavy for Transatlantic travel. Thanks to the authors who wrote and compiled this great book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A unique look at a relationship in the time of AIDS
This is an interesting love story about a couple battling against AIDS.John struggles to keep the relationship with the man he loves, Martin who is living with AIDS.Martin, however, is bitter at the world for giving him the disease and at John for not having to suffer through his pains and mental anguish. To get his own feelings out about Martin, AIDS, and the whole gay culture, John writes stories about what life may have been like with Martin if things were different: they meet as children; Martin as a rich philanthropist drawn to the naive John; Martin as a street hustler who meets John on his first visit to New York; and many others. Each story reflects at what stage their real relationship is at.

It's a unique look at love and relationships in the gay community in the face of AIDS.But, I will admit that I wasn't sure what was going on; the real relationship of Martin and John is noted by italics, whereas John's stories remain in regular font/text.Once I realized what was going on, the story was very much enhanced by this form of storytelling.Dale Peck also has a knack for dealing with human emotions.Nothing is cheap or wasted, and the actions and reactions fo the characters seem very realistic.A great book!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Follow
This book skips around a lot and I had a hard time figuring out what was going on. I had to actually back track to figure out who and what happened and how they got where they were.

Product Description
John Dear, SJ, has been arrested more than 75 times. He has spent more than a year of his life in jail. He has been mocked by armed U.S. soldiers standing outside the doors to his New Mexico parish. All this because he so fervently believes in peace.

Dear's unflappable persistence in speaking and acting on behalf of peace stems from his life-changing decision in college to leave behind his frat-boy, party-all-night lifestyle and instead become a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. In turn, that decision has, over many years, led him to live out the Beatitudes of the nonviolent Jesus in every dimension of his life rather than simply quote them when convenient from time to time.

A Persistent Peace, John Dear's autobiography, invites readers to follow the decades-long journey and spiritual growth of this nationally known peace activist, and to witness his bold, decisive, often unpopular actions before government officials, military higher-ups, and even hostile representatives of the Church. With heroes such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela, it should come as no surprise that John's activism has taken him to many places including war zones all over the world.

From his conversion to Christianity, to his calling to become a Jesuit, to the extreme dangers and delights of a life dedicated to truly living out the radical, forgiving love of Jesus, Dear's incredible story will touch anyone who believes in the power of peace. Perhaps most important of all, readers will come to understand through John that the most important disarmament of all is the one that happens inside each heart when we finally let go of our own self-righteousness, resentment, and anger. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars John the Great
I first heard about John Dear while working within a group to develop a 2010 Seasons for Nonviolence program.I urged that we invite him to come to our town, but it didn't work out.I feel closer to the work that he has accomplished through reading this autobiography and will still strive to meet him personally someday.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inner Journey of Peacein John Dear's A Persistent Peace
The most important gift John Dear gives the reader is a candid revelation of his spiritual journey. A willingness to share his interior struggles when confronted with unflagging opposition from both superiors and hawks identifies him with the common of mortal. But John Dear, unlike most, has taken the Gospel message literally. Through his life witness he provides the reader with a glimpse of what following the Gospel message should look like in our violent times.Vivid images and compact text elicit both laughter and breathless gasps.

This book is a compelling read to the 10th power!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I can't imagine why I had not heard of John Dear before. As this book points out, he has been involved in various peace movements since the Reagan-supported supression of uprisings in Central America. Probably not a book for admirers of ex-VP Dick Cheney, but as a peacenik, I personally loved it! Beyond that, John Dear is obviously a serious follower of Jesus' teachings and the book is full of solid Christian insight. Bottom line: John Dear believes with all his heart that to follow Jesus requires one to work for peace. To this end he has devoted his life, despite continuing uphill struggles with authorities. ... John Paul II and the New Evangelization
How You Can Bring the Good News to Others
Edited by:Ralph Martin and Peter Williamson

This book is an eclectic gathering of essays by many high ranking Catholics. Its pages explain in great detail the passion of the late Pope John Paul II.Evangelism is not new by any stretch of the imagination, but Pope John Paul II did coin the term, new evangelization, in meaning the way that it should be done."The evangelical shift brought about by Vatican II, Paul VI, and John Paul II is one of the most dramatic developments in modern Catholicism," states Father Avery Dulles, S.J.

Predecessor to John Paul II, Paul VI, saw evangelization as the very mission of the church. He is stated saying that the basis of all evangelization is the "one gospel given in Jesus Christ.""As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." (John 20:21).

The words from these authors signify the great need that there is today for the Catholic Church to fulfill its mission. In the first chapter it says that there are four characteristics that separate the new evangelization from previous centuries:1. the participation of every Christian. 2.Distinct from foreign missions.3.Directed to cultures. 4.Envisaging comprehensive Christianization.

The message that the gospel teaches is that we are saved through grace, saved by faith. We are saved by "the obedience of faith" Romans 16:26.God doesn't just give us his grace, he enables us to obey.We are saved from Hell for Heaven by Jesus.

Chapter three says that the Holy Spirit gives Catholics three reasons why they should evangelize:faith, hope, and charity. You are to give of them freely, because you did not pay a price, Christ did. This faith is what unlocks the doors of Heaven, and it is through Jesus "the way, the truth, and the life" that we get to Heaven.Another key to sharing is love. The love that we have and the love of God create urgency for sharing the good news and getting the gospel message out there.

The book explains that we are to take on the great commission for ourselves, being in harmony with God's plan.It also speaks about the power and need for prayer.Evangelization is not just a Protestant thing, it is the very work of the church, and it is for every church.

In 1992, on November 18th, the US plan of Go and Make Disciples was written and put into practice. It is a strategy and plan for Catholics in the US of how to go about evangelization.

The next part of the book tells about how the church was created, initiation into the Christian faith, the first missionaries, growth and development of the church, and who the biggest religions are.Surprisingly they are the Pentecostals and the Catholics. Both are at complete different ends of the spectrum. It then gives the specific steps for effective evangelization.Using your personal spiritual gifts is another area that is discussed.Preaching on the streets is not just for the Protestants any more.

Part four of the book is about evangelizing everyone. There are specific essays directed at each demographic:poor, married, teenagers, government and business, and Hispanic Americans.

The final portion of this amazing book is about how to evangelize as a parish, turning everyone into evangelists and into a community. It discusses that this is a great "spring time" for Christianity. The steps are laid out in a nice neat little row for you to follow.

This is a very interesting read, and if anyone has ever wondered about the life work of John Paul II, this is the book for them.It is on the technical side, so if you want a story, wait for the biography.Very enlightening, and it sparked an interest in me to study further about the Catholic religion and their history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!
This collection of essays from clerical and lay writers offers wide ranging background information and practical advice about the New Evangelism. It covers:

1. Historical and theological background;
2. How New Evangelism is playing out in different parts of the world;
3. How we can become authentic evangelists;
4. How to evangelize different groups, such as teenagers;
5. Evangelizing as a parish, and
6. Ecumenical opportunities for evangelism.

The writers are persuasive because they are not just writing about evangelism, they're living it. Some have transformed parishes; others lead organizations that reach out to the poorest of the poor.Whether you are looking for "how-to" instruction or just a better understanding, you can find it here.

One message that comes through loud and clear in every essay is this: evangelism is central to our mission as Christians. In that sense, this book is a must-read for all the faithful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catholics and Evangelization, Past, Present, and Future
This work is an updated version of papers presented at a 1994 "new evangelization" conference that grew out of an article by Fr. Avery Dulles (now a cardinal). Dulles, who was the keynote speaker, and other presenters addressed efforts of Vatican II participants and Popes Paul VI and John Paul II to clarify the call for Christian evangelization.

The 23 articles are grouped under six headings: Catching the Vision, Perspectives on Evangelization, How You Can Evangelize, Bringing the Good News to All People, Evangelizing as a Parish, and Evangelization and Christian Unity. Though all the authors are experts in their fields, and many refer widely to scholarly documents, the articles themselves are well within the grasp of the average reader and the content is practical, interesting, and inspiring.

In describing the "new" evangelization, Dulles writes, "Vatican II generally meant the proclamation of the basic Christian message of salvation through Jesus Christ." Other authors discuss evidence that many Catholics are not clear on the message and have no personal relationship with Jesus, two elements integral to evangelization strategies employed by Southern Baptists and others. The collection also includes stories of personal conversion, such as "Evangelizing in Business and Government" by Michael Timmis and how-to articles such as "The Story of an Evangelizing Parish" by Fr. Marc Montminy.

Fr. Montminy's conclusion reminds us that Jesus didn't die on the cross and send the Spirit so we could be nice to each other, offer a variety of parish activities, and reach out to the poor. "Jesus wants everyone to be holy! Spiritual growth is for everyone, which means that the ordinariness of everyday life is meant to be caught up in the vision of Jesus and power of the Holy Spirit. For that to happen, each one of us must hear the Good News and respond to it." ... Read more

Product Description
Over the last 30 years, Martin Puryear has created a body of work that defies categorization, creating sculpture that examines identity, culture and history. Departing from the impersonal and machined aesthetic of Minimalism, Puryear's work combines Modernist abstraction with the traditions of crafts and woodworking, in shapes informed by the natural and by ordinary objects, made with materials such as tar, wood, stone and wire. It is quiet but deliberately associative, encompassing wide-reaching cultural and intellectual experiences and drawing on a huge and varied reserve of images, ideas and information. As a high school and college student, the artist studied ornithology, falconry and archery, and in the 1960s he volunteered with the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, where he schooled himself in the region's indigenous crafts; these are only a few of the influences and methods that have embedded themselves in his work. And the sources of his works are no less varied than the possible and open-ended interpretations: "I think there are a number of levels at which my work can be dealt with and appreciated," Puryear said in a 1978 interview. "It gives me pleasure to feel there's a level that doesn't require knowledge of, or immersion in, the aesthetic of a given time or place."
This volume is published on the occasion of the artist's Fall 2007 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, which travels from New York to Fort Worth, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. It follows Puryear's development from his first solo show in 1977 to new works that are presented here for the first time and contains essays by John Elderfield, Michael Auping and Elizabeth Reede, and a conversation with the artist by Richard Powell.Amazon.com Review
Martin Puryear's sculpture has received increasing acclaim inthe years since 1989, when he was awarded a MacArthur Foundation grantand the grand prize at the São Paulo Bienal, where he was thesole United States representative. Prepared to accompany a 1991exhibition of his work at the Art Institute of Chicago, this cleanlydesigned and generously formatted catalog reflects the powerfulsimplicity of Puryear's work. Between two informative essays by RobertStarr and Neal Benezra, then curator of 20th-century painting andsculpture at the Art Institute, is a generous plate sectionreproducing more than 30 of Puryear's major works from 1974 to1990. An excellent work with great photos and text.A beautiful book that could be enjoyed by anyone interested in expertly crafted contemporary art.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Long Overdue Retrospective of one of America's greatest living artists.
Martin Puryear, like Louise Bourgeois , defies categories and this makes him a challenge for anyone organizing an exhibition or a book for that matter. His workmanship is outstanding and this tends to lead viewer astray into thinking that fine finish is really what he is after. His thought provoking sculptures appear so simple, yet they are both artistically and techinically complex. This book is an outstanding example of what can be done when those producing the book understand the work of the artist they are trying to disaplay.

5-0 out of 5 stars This artist gives me hope for our world.
Being at the opening of this show at moma was an amazingly wonderful and magical evening.Went to the very exciting opening of this show in NYC and it was truly uplifting to my soul, a very inspired exhibit!!

Emotional content mixed with organic elements of expression. Amazing accomplishment. He is a 30 year ago Art school friend ofmy friend.

For me it was like a immensely large tree [the art show] growing in the middle of a cement Jungle [NYC].Signs of life, expression, that are giving me hope .

I Highly recommend this show, and while I agree that moma may not be the best place to show his work, the contrast to that place was so striking that his work seemed very alive and sprouting right through the dullness.

I like this quote from a review:
Unlike other sculptors his age who emerged in the post-minimalist era, he values what he can make with his hands. His efforts are not just conceptual but physical. As critic Michael Brenson once observed, ''Puryear has the ability to make sculpture that is known by the body before it is articulated by the mind." ... Read more

Moreover, it requires no specialized knowledge of Reformation theology or Church history.Rich in language, direct, powerful, fresh in ideas, and often disquieting in their effect, the writings of Luther provide compelling reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good reading
a colorful rendering of some of the inner thoughts of this reformer. The earthier quotes mirror his grotesque actions against other Reformers who had the courage to act on their beliefs even if it meant their very lives (which Luther was eager to extinguish).
Of course, the Lutheran church has made an apology to these faith groups on behalf of their namesake for atrocitites committed some 500 year ago.Good on you, Lutherans!

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor selection
This is a very poor selection of Martin Luther's writings for spiritual reading. Find a copy of "Faith Alone" if you are looking for something from the great reformer for your spiritual reading. One selection has to do with Luther expelling gas to ward off the devil (this selection has absolutely no point. Luther was from peasant stock and retained his earthiness. Relating such an incident has no purpose in a book meant for spiritual reading). Another has to do with a letter he wrote to a woman who suffered a miscarriage and which has little application to anyone else. I have read a good deal of Luther and I am convinced that the authors don't even like him (they call him an "old, hateful man" because of a handful of anti-semetic statements that are an anomaly in an otherwise profoundly pastoral life) or understand what his message was. Luther's writings fill over thirty volumes and are a goldmine of inspiration and insight to anyone who takes the trouble to sift through them. It looks as if the editors here couldn't be bothered to sift much. You will turn over page after page and be bewildered as to why they chose the selections that they did. I know that I am. ... Product Description

The fascinating story of four maverick siblings is interwoven with a magisterial and multi-faceted account of the industrial, political, and artistic ferment of early 19th-century Britain

The richly varied lives of the Martin brothers reflected the many upheavals of Britain in the age of Industrial Revolution. Low-born and largely unschooled, they were part of a new generation of artists, scientists, and inventors who witnessed the creation of the modern world. William, the eldest, was an eccentric inventor; Richard fought in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo; Jonathan, a hellfire preacher tormented by madness; while John the youngest single-handedly invented, mastered, and exhausted an entire genre of painting, the apocalyptic sublime, while playing host to the foremost writers, scientists, and thinkers of his day. This narrative centers on a generation of inventors, artists, and radical intellectuals (including the chemist Humphry Davy, the engineer George Stephenson, the social reformer Robert Owen, and the poet Shelley), and for Max Adams, the shared inspiration that binds this generation together is the cult of Prometheus, the titan of ancient Greek mythology who became a potent symbol of political and personal liberation from the mid-18th century onwards. Whether writing about Davy’s invention of the miner’s safety lamp, the scandalous private life of the Prince Regent, the death of Shelley or J.M.W. Turner’s use of color, Adams’s narrative is pacy; characterful; and rich in anecdote, quotation, and memorable character sketch. Like John Martin himself, he has created a sprawling and brightly colored canvas on an epic scale.

Product Description
These are the words John Keats chose to epitomize his short, frustrating, and tragic life. They appear as his epitaph in Rome's Protestant cemetery. Often called the greatest English poet after Shakespeare, Keats had a lifelong preoccupation with early death. This sense of mortality, along with the poet's famous, unrequited love for Fanny Brawne, sparked dozens of finely written sonnets and lyrics of love.

This beautifully crafted collection contains some of the most heartfelt of Keats' personal poems. "La Belle Dame Sans Merci A Ballad" and "The Eve of St. Agnes" are paragons of the gothic lyric, wherein mysterious lovers, dream visions, and late-night fantasy come magically to life. Lighter verse, such as "Where be ye going, you Devon maid?" and such passionate, pensive poems as "When I have fears that I may cease to be" provide a personal glimpse of the young poet's dreams and dreads.

This selection of twenty-six poems also presents an introduction to the life of John Keats, notes on the indivdual poems, and ten illustrations, half of which are of biographical interest and half underscore thematic elements contained in the poems.

Since the inception of Communism, there has been a struggle between the proponents of materialism and atheism and the Catholic Church.Malachi Martin presents a fascinating tale of this struggle for world domination by the former Soviet Union and the obstacle of the church which stood in its way.

A polish Pope, chosen from the controlling Soviet Union, would take to Rome an overpowering mandate to challenge his former master state. To see Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe freed from the Soviet sphere would become a consuming passion of the new Pope as he became a major player in geopolitics..

Martin says this about geopolitics:
"Geopolitics is, at one and the same time, so grandiose in its assumptions, so broad in its world-wide implications, and yet so dependent on such a complicated machinery, that it lies outside the scope of our normal thinking modes." p 381

It was inevitable the Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II would do this geopolitical dance.Of course, the common ground that Pope John Paul had with Mikhail Gorbachev was that Gorbachev was raised and baptized in the Russian Orthodox faith.Having such a religious background must have been difficult for Gorbachev to survive in the absolute world of the state. The rejection of religion and the acceptance of atheism was mandatory for membership in the Communist Party.

Adherence to any religion was in the words of Lenin -"Religion is a kind of spiritual gin in which the slaves of capitalism drown their human shape and their claim to any descent human life." P 415Instead of God having control over human souls, the state would reengineer these souls to be subjects of the state and part of the new world order of socialist humanity.Religion had no place in this remade world.

As history shows, the three main players in the fall of the Soviet Union were Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev, and a polish World War II resistance fighter who became Pope John Paul II at a crucial time in earth history. This book is a good resource on this history.

I will leave this review with the last prayer of Ajax, the Greek warrior, which ends the book:

Father in Heaven
Deliver us from this darkness
And make our skies clear
If we must die,
Let us die in the Light.

For the millions who died and suffered under the Soviet Union, the light came for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The price paid for the light should never be forgotten. For the darkness should never be allowed again to plague the earth with its insidious tentacles.

Product Description
Common wisdom concerning Luther and Calvin suggests that these two theologians do not relate the testimony of Christ to the conscience in the same way.Zachman undertakes the long overdue comparison of their theologies, especially the ways in which Luther and Calvin define and describe the conscience and relate this to the testimonies of the Word and the Spirit. While remaining critical of the distinction that both Luther and Calvin sought to maintain between the foundation of assurance and its confirmation in faith and election, Zachman concludes that although Luther and Calvin have different emphases in their theological treatment of the conscience, they fundamentally agree:the foundation of the peace, assurance, and certainty of conscience lies in the grace of God for us, as revealed to the conscience both by the external witness of the Word of God and the internal witness of the Holy Spirit. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars No Real Sense of the City
Having just moved to San Francisco, and being a fan of mysteries and crime novels, I figured this collection of thirteen short stories and excerpts would be a nice way to get to know my new surroundings. Unfortunately, only a few of the stories really attempt to evoke their setting, and on the whole, the book is a bit flat.

Bill Pronzini's contribution is a tragic (and rather predictable) little story set in Glen Park and the Mission. Dashiell Hammet's 1928 Continental Op story, "Fly Paper" is the longest, and perhaps best fiction in the book. Hildegarde Teilhet's "Demon in the Belfry," which recounts a savage double murder that occurred in 1895 is interesting reportage, but pales next to Oscar Lewis' 1924 true crime article, "The Phosphorescent Bride." His retelling of a famous murder and legal battle is the most engrossing bit of writing in the collection. Joe Gores contributes an early story from 1966, in which two hipsters decide to go witness an execution at San Quentin for kicks. It's an effectively creepy story, but not as evocative of the city as one of his DKA stories (which are collected in the volume Stakeout on Page Street) would have been.

The editors note that Jim Thompson's story "Ironside", is one of his few that has fallen out of print. However, after reading it here, one can understand why as it exhibits a few of the harsh sentences he excelled at, but none of the coherence. Scenes from the 1958 film Vertigo are included, and although one may concede that Alfred Hitchcock "made" the movie, it's nonetheless irritating that the actual authors of the screenplay which is being excerpted, Alec Coppel and Samuel Taylor, are buried. Ambrose Bierce's Poe-inspired ghost story is a decent inclusion, but Mark Twain's brief ghost piece is not. Marcia Muller's "Deceptions" is a so-so story set amidst the city's elite and the Golden Gate Bridge. The excerpt from Mabel Maney's "The Case of the Not-So-Nice Nurse" is atrocious, while those from Gloria White's "Murder on the Run" and John Lantigua's "Heat Lightning" are more interesting, especially the latter, whose action is set in the Mission.

On the whole, the collection is a very mixed bag, one I found rather disappointing. There's no real sense of the city to be gained from it, nor was I introduced to any outstanding talent I wasn't familiar with. Oh well, I guess I'll stick it in the guest bedroom. ... Read more
