The definitive collection of pre-Bauhaus works.
This beautifully illustrated massive tomb chronicles how the artist arrived to abstraction.My only regret is the lack of at least some of his Bauhaus years.My favorite Kandinsky flourished at the Bauhaus and inParis and I hope to find a volume as beautiful and rich as this.It offersno little insight into the man and his art.Recommended for the seriousstudent and true devotee. ... Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) is one of the most important and influential painters of the twentieth century. A pioneer in creating art without figurative motifs, he was also the earliest abstract painter to explain and justify what he was doing. His theoretical writings, including Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1912), are among the most significant texts written by an artist in the last hundred years. Published to accompany the recent exhibition of his work at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Kandinsky Watercolours spans the artist's whole career and consists entirely of works on paper--watercolors, prints, and drawings. It is in these works that Kandinsky's spontaneity of expression is most clearly illustrated, and it is through watercolor that the artist achieved the luminosity and intensity of color that he sought. In addition to the beautifully reproduced watercolors are the artist's outstanding prints, including little-known woodcuts and lithographs. Vasily Kandinsky was one of the most pivotal figures in the development of modernist painting. He was born in the mid 19th-century, and by the time of his death in 1944 he had played a key role in revolutionizing the nature of European painting, and laying the groundwork for future movements. Most significant among his contributions to high modernism are his involvements with the Blue Rider group, Russian constructivism, and the later years of the Bauhaus. By the end of 1910 Kandinsky had developed a purely abstract style--arguably one of the first--in his paintings, particularly the watercolors.

This beautiful book, designed to accompany the first full-scale exhibition of Kandinsky's work in London at the Royal Academy of Arts, traces his development from an unremarkable painter of Russian folk scenes to the geometrically precise and clinical draftsman of the later abstract creations. His image-making culminated during his final years with paintings of strangely micro-organic-looking works. Art historian Frank Whitford's introductory essay charts Kandinsky's career with wonderful lucidity, and is particularly good on the tension between the artist's theory and practice. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT PRINT REPRODUCTIONS
Firstly it has to be said this has been a very good year for Kandinsky. Notably 3 exhibitions of 100 of his large oil paintings in Munich, Paris and New York. But this much smaller scale exhibition"Kandinsky - Das Druckgrafische Werk" (never seen outside Germany) was a truly amazing effort on the part of the Curators of the Lembachhaus Museum to display every one of his prints in the order they were produced and - very important for those who could not be there in person - celebrate this event by publishing a catalogue which in itself is a beautiful work of art.

For the first time we get to see these prints in their true muted colours - not the crude brightened versions which have done a huge disservice to his intended message (and artistic reputation) in the past. I'm especially thinking of what I thought was a great catalogue for the Royal Accademy's 1999 Exhibition - "Kandinsky, Watercolours and other Works on Paper".On the basis of Melanie Horst's 100% accurate colour reproductions one now knows every print reproduction in the RA catalogue was degraded by the Italian printers. The dull red hues Kandisky prefered usually made bright scarlet. In severalcases his blues changed to violet. His pale yellows invariably sunshine yellow.

"The Complete Prints" is also a unique Kandinsky publication because wherever possible every print is shown in its original size.Most importantly (in this catalogue) every print includes its original vellum borders. To use the old cliche - the difference when compared to all previous renditions of these prints is "between chalk and cheese".

For instance to see his 1922 "Lithograph for the Fourth Bauhaus Portfolio" in its true colours and original large format is a major revelation. Showing just how quickly Kandinsky regained his "mojo" at the Bauhaus when returning to Germany after 8 fallow Russian refugee years.

Backing-up the perfect visual presentation there is of course all the explanatory documentation one expects from the expert Curators of the Lenbachhaus Munchen.But not too serious to resist adding a perfect human touch on the final page.A small photo of Kandinsky on his bicyle riding through the countryside near Murnau - from which he derived so much inspiration and happiness in the company of Gabriele Munter.

This would appear to be the very first Kandinsky book which does complete justice to one aspect of his vast output. When ALL his works are published (especialy the waterclours) to the incredibly high standard set by this beautiful volume - to quote the words of Diego Rivera - "Someday Kandinsky will be the best known and best loved of men".

PS Had Amazon readers sought out this book when I first posted this revue they could have purchased it for $45.I note the asking price is now just short of $500.It's nice to find this unique catalogue has already become a "classic". ... Read more

The historic encounter around 1911 between the composer Arnold Schonberg and the painter Wassily Kandinsky occurred at a moment when the first wild revolts against traditional art, Dada and Futurism, had just manifested themselves.Independently of those sometimes spectacular activities, both Schonberg and Kandinsky had already concluded that the material and the compositional methods they had relied on in the past were exhausted and did not satisfy the development of their artistic ideas.
Both artists had already submitted their modes of production to a critical analysis which resulted in Schonberg's Theory of Harmony and Kandinsky's Concerning the Spiritual in Art, both of 1911 - indeed the two artists had already been putting their self-criticism into practice for some time.In Schonberg's case this led to breaking with tonality; Kandinsky effected the transition to abstract painting.

A must have book for 20th century's art comprehension
Excellent contents, deep and acessible. Based on a 1993's symposium concerning the interdisciplinarity between Kandinsky's paintings and Schoenberg's music, specially in first decade of 20th century. Schonberg and Kandinsky: An Historic Encounter (Contemporary Music Studies) brings elucidative articles, analysis of some paintings, scores with exemples and more. I didn't finished the reading yet, but in 2 years researching about this is the best book I saw and probably the best book ever released about the theme.

And if you're interested about this subject, I personally recommend Arnold Schoenberg and Kandinsky.
