5-0 out of 5 stars The American Scene
Edward Hopper has left a legacy of work that is once familiar and elusive in the American consciousness. This monograph examines Hopper's world on canvas by placing his work within the context of the changes brought about by America's history and technology. From silent urban scenes to countryside vistas, particular attention is paid to the introduction of the automobile into American life, as well as such modern surroundings as fluorescent lighting, diners, and rail travel, all of which lent unique subject matter to Hopper's paintings. The text provides a comprehensive look at artist's life and includes a bibliography and chronology.

The author, Lloyd Goodrich (1897-1987) was director of the Whitney Museum in New York and a leading author and advocate of American art for more than a half century.

The bequest of the Edward Hopper collection, by Hopper's widow Josephine, in 1968, also resulted from Mr. Goodrich's reputation as the leading scholar and friend of Edward Hopper. Today, the collection of some 2,000 works by Hopper is a major strength of the museum, and makes it the world's major center for st dy of the artist.

As the director of the Whitney Museum, from 1958 to 1968, Mr. Goodrich guided its transition from an essentially private institution to a public one, broadening its governing board beyond the family of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who founded the museum in 1930, to include many individuals and arts patrons from New York society. He also presided over construction of the museum's present quarters, at Madison Avenue and 75th Street, a controversial but generally popular building designed in distinctive minimalist style by the architect Marcel Breuer in 1966. Changed View of American Art. ... Read more

Product Description
Walker Evans' radical photography of the 1930s demonstrated that unembellished photographic fact could serve as a highly poetic language. These works expanded the potential of the art of photography and at the same time defined a lasting iconography that recognized advertising, movies, and car culture as central images of modern American identity. Walker Evans & Company focuses on Evans as a central figure in the arts of the 1920s and 30s, and includes works in photography and other mediums that influenced Evans or were influenced by him, or which resonate in a significant way with aspects of his imagery, sensibility, and style. Among the other artists whose work is featured are: Eugene Atget, Mathew Brady, Stuart Davis, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, August Sander, Andy Warhol, and Edward Weston. Published in conjunction with the second of three cycles of millennial exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Featuing: Walker Evans, Eugène Atget, Bernice Abbott, Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Lewis Baltz, Harry Callahan, William Eggelston, David Goldblatt, Russell Lee, Wright Morris, Joel Sternfeld, Thomas Struth, Paul Strand, August Sander, Matthew Brady, Stuart Davis, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol and Edward Weston amongst many others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photo Fine Art

Peter Galassi focuses on Evans as one of the great photographers of the twentieth century who also had a huge influence on many American photographers (and some contemporary graphic artists) and the ten visual chapters in this beautiful book provide a convincing case.

Photography as an art form has had a hard time proving it.Unlike fine art paintings, which exist as an entity, photography has mainly presented a visual record in many printed mediums (newspapers, magazines, advertising, packaging, posters) all seen by the public but not as art.Walker Evans helped to change that perception in America.

The first two chapters are interesting because Galassi features photographers who influenced Evans, especially Eugene Atget and his studies of Paris. The remaining eight each start with work by Evans then the chapter theme is carried on by other well-known photographers (and artists) who drew inspiration from the style and subject matter in his work. The hundred creative folk featured are a who's who of American photography since the 1940s.

Just over three hundred images are shown printed in an impressively fine screen (more than 250dpi) that brings out the wonderful detail in so many of them.Galassi contributes a fine introduction and each photographer get a comprehensive list of their photos in the back of the book.Overall I thought this was a fascinating survey American art photography whose origins clearly owe so much to Walker Evans.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the lonely people / Where do they all belong?
First let me say the title of this review is "stolen" from the lyrics of "Eleanor Rigby", a song written by Paul Mccartney & John Lennon.
We all have favourite writers, favourite sportpersons or favourite painters. For a long time, Edward Hopper has been a favourite of mine and what is certainly interesting is that I do not thinkMr Hopper was very good technically. I am using technically in the sense that, for instance, Salvador Dali was very good. Some times I think his human figures look a bit awkward. However, in my opinion, no one portrays in a better way the loneliness that surrounds us all or the emptiness that pervades our lives most of the time.
The first time I came across this book by Ms Levin was when a very good friend of mine, for a reason I cannot think of at the moment, offered me her own copy. It was a very delicate gift indeed, a collection of poems related to some Hopper paintings, namely some very famous ones such as "Early Sunday Morning" or "Nighthawks".
Though I am very interested in poetry I am not familiar with american poetry and, to be honest, the only author I had heard of before was Joyce Carol Oates. That did not prevent me from recognizing that most poems that are included are great poetry. Two in particular stand out, other people would perhaps choose different ones: "Inventing my parents" by Susan Ludvigson and "Early Sunday Morning" by John Stone. I quote a small fragment from each poem

"and she's laughing, light
as summer rain when it begins."

"Somewhere in the next block
someone may be practicing the flute
but not here"

More than once I have offered copies of this book. The reaction has always been, "Where did you find such a beautiful book?" or some similar sentence.
Ms Levin is the author of other books on Hopper. This "Poetry of solitude" may be a nice introduction to Hopper's thick biography or Hopper's places.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid
I am neither a poet, nor a visual artist, so I will provide for you the layman's review:I find this book to be a charming text, based on a very good idea (ask writers to create poetry inspired by the Hopper paintings reproduced herein).Like all books of poetry, I'm quite sure that - like me - you will find that some of the poetry speaks to you, and some of it does not, but you will find all of it to be of a very high quality.Likewise, one of the aspects I enjoy most about this book is the quality of the reproductions, which, perhaps because of the book's rather small physical size, shows off the richness and clarity of Hopper's work better than most other books that present his oils.I have given this book as a gift twice now, and the recipients have been very impressed... ... Product Description
The first major work on the exquisite watercolors of America's foremost and most popular realist painter. Edward Hopper has been celebrated for over half a century as America's most eloquent realist artist. His best known oils, such as Nighthawks, Early Sunday Morning, and House by a Railroad, are powerful psychological statements that convey a sense of angst and alienation. Yet there is another Hopper we know less well: the freer, more spontaneous spirit that emerges in his watercolors. In 1923 he spent a summer in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and began painting houses, landscapes, and fishing boats. In them he captures remnants of nineteenth-century America that for him symbolized the fundamental character of the country's people and places, and prompted him to reexamine his views about the relationship between the past and the modern. Over the next two decades, Hopper painted hundreds of watercolors, in Gloucester, the coast of Maine, New Mexico, and Cape Cod. This beautiful book reproduces and examines over one hundred of Hopper's greatest watercolors in the context of his life and travels. It is an indispensable book for anyone interested in American art. ... Read more

When I read a book on a specific artist, I approach it from three different angles. I am an artist first and foremost, a graphic designer by profession, and employed by a library. This book ranks five stars in allthree categories. It's usually pretty easy to find an art book with reallygood color reproductions or with really good text, but to find one such asthis with both is a true find. The author's insightful and intelligentwriting combined with the wonderful color reproductions really puts youright in Edward Hoppers world. Excerpt: Edward Hopper (July 22, 1882 May 15, 1967) was a prominent American realist painter and printmaker. While most popularly known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. In both his urban and rural scenes, his spare and finely calculated renderings reflected his personal vision of modern American life. Hopper was born in upper Nyack, New York, a yacht-building center on the Hudson River north of New York City. He was one of two children of a comfortably well-off, middle-class family. His parents, mostly of Dutch ancestry, were Garret Henry Hopper, a dry-goods merchant, and his wife Elizabeth Griffiths Smith. Though not as successful as his forebears, Garrett provided well for his two children with considerable help from his wifes inheritance. He retired at age forty-nine. Edward and his only sister Marion attended both private and public schools. They were raised in a strict Baptist home. His father had a mild nature, and the household was dominated by women: Hopper's mother, grandmother, sister, and maid. His birthplace and boyhood home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Hopper was a good student in grade school and showed talent in drawing at age five. He readily absorbed his fathers intellectual tendencies and love of French and Russian culture. He also demonstrated his mothers artistic heritage. Hoppers parents encouraged his art and kept him amply supplied with materials, instructional magazines, and illustrated books. By his teens, he was working in pen-and-ink, charcoal, watercolor, and oildrawing from nature as well as making political cartoons. In 1895, he created his first signed oil painting, Rowboat in Rocky Cove. It showed his early interest in nautic... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=65319 ... Read more
