Very well-written account of the psychoanalytic influences on Ernst's art.So persuasive, the book is not so much a theory as a definitive exercise in decoding Ernst's arcane symbolism, and has been received as such by theart historical community. One of perhaps a dozen truly interesting andliterate books on modern art! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Max Ernst Pioneer of Surrealism
For all those who want to learn about the position of Max Ernst within Surrealism this is an essential book. Scholarly essays by Werner Spies (arguably the foremost authority on Max Ernst) and William Camfield, who writes in fascinating detail about the transition period when the artist moved from Dada into Surrealism. The period comes alive with rare photographs and anecdotes about the struggles of Max Ernst to survive in Germany after the first world war and his efforts to reach Paris, the promised land. Max Ernst, a true pioneer of many of the art techniques taught nowadays in artschools, such as frottage and collage, is celebrated in this book with not only almost 200 colour plates of many of his masterpieces, but also many lesser known works which show how he constructed his collages. Added to this are inumerable black and white illustrations of the sources for many of his most famous paintings. As Max Ernst never wrote an autobiography,a book such as this is a must for all those who desire to know something more about the artist who is quoted on page 28 as saying "A painter is lost when he finds himself." An artist difficult to know, but this book goes a long way in bridging that gap. ... Read more

Product Description
Max Ernst, the great Surrealist artist, produced a body of graphic work surpassing that of any other artist associated with the movement. His innovative print-making techniques were the equivalent of the semi-automatic image-making procedures used by the painters and poets of his day, and he collaborated with the literary founders of Dada and Surrealism to create some of the most beautiful and evocative books of our time. This book is a fully illustrated catalogue of the Max Ernst retrospective, held at The New York Public Library, with three essays documenting and interpreting the artist's books and prints, a chronology, and a selective bibliography. ... Product Description
Born in Germany, Max Ernst spent more than 40 years of his life in France and lived in exile in America for over a decade. This study illustrates and assesses all aspects of one of the truly international artists of the 20th century. It also contains Max Ernst's full autobiographical notes. The extensive plate section includes works in all media and genres - painting, sculpture, works on paper, book illustration - and from all periods of the artist's career. In his analysis, Werner Spies examines the artist's creative energy that was fuelled by a continual dialogue between tradition and innovation. Although frequently associated with the Dada and Surrealist movements, Ernst's critical assessment of current styles ensured his independence from any particular trend. Other contributors, discuss the symbolism of his Surrealist imagery, the influence of romanticism and the Native American ethos on him, and his ties with England. Max Ernst's own "biographical notes", illustrated with documentary photographs and further examples of his work and interspersed with other writings by the artist, provide insights into his life and art and constitute a vivid autobiographical document.Werner Spies is the author of "Picasso's World of Children", "Pablo Picasso: The Path to Sculpture" and "Fernando Botero - Paintings and Drawings". ... Product Description
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted city life as a joyous, bustling pageant, a sophisticated swirl of desiring bodies and colorful urbanity, giving Germany an energetic iconography for the glory days of modernity. One of the four founders of Die Brucke (The Bridge), Kirchner drew on German Renaissance art to conjure expressive exaggerations of face and posture, and brought to landscape painting a city-dweller's zest, imbuing tranquil scenery with riotous energy. Coinciding with a Kirchner retrospective at the Stadel Museum--the first to be seen in Germany in 30 years--this massive volume surveys the artist's several creative phases and genres. It features the famous nudes made during the Die Brucke era, his classic scenes of frenetic Berlin city life and Swiss mountainscapes from Davos, along with lesser-known canvases, works on paper and sculpture. With essays by renowned art historians, this definitive monograph offers fresh perspective on the continued relevance of Kirchner.
Born in Bavaria, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) studied architecture in Dresden, where he met the young painter Fritz Beyl. With Beyl, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel, Kirchner founded the group known as Die Brucke. Casting aside the then-prevalent academic style of painting, Kirchner and his friends allied themselves with early Renaissance artists such as Albrecht Durer, Matthias Grunewald and Cranach the Elder, and revived older media such as woodcut printing. Kirchner briefly saw army service in the First World War, but suffered a nervous breakdown and was discharged. In the interbellum years Kirchner's reputation grew enormously, until the Nazi regime branded his art degenerate: in 1937 over 600 of his works were sold or destroyed. In 1938, despairing of this destruction and the general political climate, Kirchner committed suicide.

5-0 out of 5 stars praiseworthy kirchner overview
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, born 1880, was said to be inconsiderate, difficult and continually suspicious. As an architectural student, he was one of the founding members of the Brucke movement in 1905. It was from this time that his finest works were created. Kirchners descent into anxiety, depression and drug addiction around 1916 saw the end of his great creative flowering.

This catalog of an exhibition held at Frankfurt's Stadel Museum covers Kirchner's work over his whole career. The more unusually seen works from his post breakdown period demonstrate a distinct deterioration of the groundbreaking creativity of his earlier years. These colorful paintings, some copying the style of Picasso or Matisse, appear to lack cohesion or have any particular energy. It is nevertheless interesting to visualise Kirchner's output after his severe mental breakdown.

Kirchner's art was classified as being Endartete (degenerate) by the Nazi regime in 1936. A further blow to the artist was the German invasion of Austria in 1938. Kirchner took his own life in June of that year.

This book is an excellent overview of Kirchner's total oeuvre. There are high quality color illustrations of the 180 Stadel Museum exhibits; paintings, woodcuts, lithographs, drawings and a few wooden sculptures. The accompanying essays are well written and informative. Highly recommended for enthusiasts of this interesting if variable artist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great until 1917...
Over the last couple of years there have been several high-quality publications centered on Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and this book comes as a valuable addition to them. It is the catalogue for the retrospective that was held until July 2010 at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, and it follows a rather classic chronological pattern, describing the early years, then the Dresden , the Berlin, the war and the Davos periods. That last period is marked by the appearance of a "new style", characterizedby "blocks of color that are frequently outlined" and which lead to a "much more abstract idiom", a "departure from both the expressive and the figurative". As far as this later style is concerned, the authors cannot help admitting that it is still considered uneven, if not weak, when compared to the great expressionist compositions of the 1910's and one is tempted to agree with this remark (a 1932-1934 work such as Color Dance II, illustrated on page 200, pales when compared to Picasso's output of the same period; the 1928-33 portrait of Dr. Carl Hagemann looks like a wan version of Otto Dix's great "New Objectivity" portraits which are contemporary to it).

Now,whatever the doubts one might nourish on the quality of Kirchner's late output, this book is probably the best and most complete on the German painter and it is also a pleasant read, since it tackles a previously unstudied theme: the representation of couples in the artist's oeuvre, based on the study of an unusual and fascinating drawingfrom a 1927 sketchbook.

The quality of the reproductions is first-rate, which is often the case with Hatje Cantz publications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Trail Blazer of the Modern Art
This co-founder of the short-lived 1920s, dada movement, in addition to being an antiestablishmentaralist, was also the "Surrealist's surrealist. " Like Picasso, Ernst's paintings were an artistic editorial of our times, many serving as bookends that bracketed the last three generations. Like news from afar, they reported on the symbolic meaning of the major events of our times. His "Europe After the Rain" has been compared to Picasso's "Guernica," in its power to summarize the horrors of war.

Of his own work, Ernst is quoted as having said: "My work is unacceptable to specialists of art, culture, and morality. But it does have the ability to enchant my accomplices: poets, pataphysicians (the science of the realm beyond metaphysics) and a few illiterates.

Rebellious by nature, Ernst was a nervous but precocious and an impressionable young boy, in constant friction with those in authority. Once he read Freud's "Interpretations of Dreams," the course was irrevocably set for his entrance into the demonic mode of expressing fantastic content and forms that spewed from both sides of his brain, his mind and his soul. However, it was WW-I that clinched Ernst's attitude towards authority as well as towards the conventional norms of both society and formal artistic training. After that war, along with others in his Paris Left Bank peer group, he set out to found the dada movement, which was then regarded as the proper reaction to the imbecilic First World War. That movement took advantage of, and was obsessed with "finding the artistic in any and everything," including what others considered "junk." Collages were often the centerpiece of the "dada movement " and of much of Ernest's artistic influenced output. His work was of course the inspiration for the work of Jackson Pollack and others of his genre of "slap bucket paint" art.

This collection of both black and white, and color plates, captures all of his major works up until his death in 1976.Arguably, next to Dali, Ernst was not just the founder, but also the best of the Surrealists, and certainly heavily influenced all of the serious surrealists that followed, including Dali.A true trail blazer of the modern artistic genre. Product Description
Julien Levy opened his New York gallery in 1931, and the following year assembled the first Surrealist show ever held in that city. Over the next two decades he exhibited works by Dalí, Ernst, Joseph Cornell, Calder, Eugene Berman, Tchelitchew, Giacometti, Arshile Gorky and many other luminaries of 20th-century art, giving a number of them their first shows. But Levy was more than a gifted dealer: he also had a gift for friendship, and in this charming, anecdotal memoir he recounts his intimate dealings with some of the most innovative figures of his generation. He crossed the Atlantic with Duchamp and introduced Tanguy to New York. He conceived the idea for Dalí's Birth of Venus pavilion at the World's Fair, shared a summer house with Ernst and fished with André Breton (yielding a memorable description of the Surrealist leader's run-in with a blowfish). And he was with Gorky in the final, tragic days before the painter's suicide. Memoir of an Art Gallery is the story of prescient vision and lifelong devotion. By turns humorous and moving, and back in print after many years, it is also one of the most enjoyable works ever written about the pivotal time when Manhattan became the art capital of the world. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun read, anecdotal during the glory days of surrealism
Fun to read Levy's take on what was going on around him and because of him in New York.A few fun photos as well.Highly recommended if you want to be "inside" that period of time, tho Levy's writing style is sometimes a bit self-important giving me the impression that he wants to be considered an artist in his own right. That said, he played a big part in bringing surrealism to America and as such his perspective is valuable.Enjoy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I pasted this text from a David Sylvian's site
First published in Paris in 1930, A Little Girl Dreams of Taking the Veil is Max Ernst's second collage-novel. One of the forermost surrealist artists, Max Ernst has created here a bizarre and enchanting set of images by juxtaposing illustrations from all kinds of books new and old. The collages tell the dream of a young who, having lost her virginity on the day of her first communion, commits herself to a religous vocation. Her dream is an impious and schizophrenic nightmare richly and ironically conceived. Full of alarming images this dreamscape resisits rational interpretation.
A Little Girl Dreams of Taking the Veil is a haunting tour de force which has lost none of its shock or value ... Read more
