Magisterial
Poor Richard Lancelyn Green!I knew his name through the scandal headlines that surrounded his death two years back, a suicide which he tried to stage as a murder, hoping or so it seems to cast a sinister light on the family of Conan Doyle and their auction of period Holmes memorabilia at Christie's which he, RLG, thought should have been disposed of elsewhere.And laboring in the shadow of his far better known father Roger Lancelyn Green, it can't have been easy.In any case it's great that at least one of his anthologies, THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, will keep his name alive in a positive way.

I don't understand why he changed the names of stories while presenting them here.Why bother retitling Adrian Conan Doyle's story "The Red Widow"?Is his own title, "The Adventure of Ainsworth Castle," any more thrilling?Surely it's misleading to present the famous story by Arthur Whittaker, "The Case Of The Man Who Was Wanted" under a title like "The Adventure of the Sheffield Banker."Please!Whittaker's tale isn't very good, but it has the historic distinction of having been mistaken for an actual Sherlock Holmes story (for it was found among Conan Doyle's papers) and published under the Master's name by misguided scholars in 1948.SC Roberts also has his title changed.I guess Lancelyn Green wanted them all to be called "The Adventure of . . ." and felt no compunction about renaming these old chestnuts where they didn't fit the bill.A small point, but one perhaps illustrative of the sometimes magisterial nature of the man's character.

Otherwise you couldn't ask for a more interesting smapling of Holmes pastiche.The Stuart Palmer story is good, and an unexpected choice considering that its companion, "The Remarkable Worm" is far better known."The Adventure of the Trained Cormorant," formerly known as plain "Holmes in Scotland," is a splendid reconstruction of one of the cases mysteriously alluded to by Watson in one of the canonical tales.Maybe I'm the only fan in the world who's not blown away by D O Smith, and I'll try reading more of Smith's work to catch the vibe, but I was less than overwhelmed by reading the tedious "Adventure of the Purple Hand," which seems padded out to twice its optimum length.However, many fans whose opinions I respect swear by Smith and I'll read some more before I put that baby to bed.Take it all and all, a fine anthology and a nice way to remember poor old Richard Lancelyn Green.

The Best of the Holmes Pastiche Collections
Richard Lancelyn Green has examined nearly a century's worth of Holmesian pastiches and collected some of the very best in this book.Stories date from 1920 through the 1980's.

Many pastiches try to parody or reinvent the originals, but theses stories affectionately recapture the flavor and tone of the canon.

A good collection.
In this volume Richard Lancelyn Green has assembled some of the best of the noncanonical Holmes short stories as of 1986. I personally think _TheExploits of Sherlock Holmes_ by Adrian Conan Doyle and John Dickson Carr isa slightly better collection overall, but this one comes close.

AdrianConan Doyle is represented here as well, the adventure of "ArnsworthCastle" being simply a republication of "The Red Widow" from_Exploits_. (I disagree with the reviewer who thought the story was a"complete failure," but I also disagree with anthologist Greenthat it is the strongest of the younger Doyle's Holmes pastiches.)

Thehighlight of the collection is undoubtedly Denis O. Smith's "ThePurple Hand." This is the first of Smith's Holmes tales (of whichanother -- "The Silver Buckle" -- appears in _The Mammoth Book ofNew Sherlock Holmes Adventures_); in general they are among the bestpastiches in the short-story genre. (Smith has published them in threevolumes under the title _The Chronicles of Sherlock Holmes_.)

Other highpoints include "The Tired Captain" and "The GreenEmpress," based on two unrecorded cases mentioned by Watson in thefirst paragraph of "The Naval Treaty." The latter of the twocases requires a brief explanation.

"The Green Empress" is the new title of the tale mentioned in a review below under the name "TheSecond Stain." Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, of course, wrote a story of that title as well, but the version he published does not seem to match the description in "The Naval Treaty." There is also a reference to the "affair of the second stain" in the opening paragraph of "The Yellow Face" (which the Bantam/Doubleday version for some reason emends so that it refers instead to the "adventure of the Musgrave Ritual"). Some Sherlockians claim this remark refers to yet a third case, though I do not happen to know the foundation of this claim. At any rate there would thus appear to have been at least two and perhaps three Holmes cases catalogued by Watson under the same name.

F.P. Cellie's tale fills in the details of the one mentionedin "The Naval Treaty." In 1967 it won a contest in South Africaunder its original title of "The Second Stain," and its title hasbeen altered for publication in the present volume. End of explanation.

Another highlight: this volume is the only one currently in print -- so faras I know -- in which Vincent Starrett's classic "The Unique_Hamlet_" is collected. In my own view this pastiche is somewhatoverrated (being among other things ludicrously easy to solve), but at anyrate it's a good one to have; at least it was one of the first, having beenprivately published in 1920.

And another point which may be of interestto Amazon shoppers: the larger and more recent collection _The Mammoth Bookof New Sherlock Holmes Adventures_, edited by Michael Ashley (and with aforeword by Green), does not include _any_ overlap with the present volume.Owners of one may therefore feel safe in purchasing the other.

huge fun - highly recommended
I've just finished this and am amazed by how much I enjoyed it - I'd bought it expecting to hate it but not so. It's very patchy but no more so than Conan Doyle's original stories, and the only really terrible bit isone effort by his son Adrian which is a complete failure, although a veryinvolved thing about Scotland (which left me wondering, why couldn't hehave just put the brooch in his pocket? - you'll know what I mean whenyou've read it) tries the patience rather. Best are the 'Purple Hand' and'Second Stain' stories, both of which the man himself would have been veryproud of, but all are honourable additions to the mythos, hugely enjoyableand very sensitive to the much-loved originals.

Better than most of the Casebook of Sherlock Holmes
This book compiles what is pretty much the cream of Sherlockian pastiche since the art form began. I really enjoyed this collection, although many of the stories appear in other anthologies.I'd happily ditch"Mazarin Stone" or "Three Gables" from the Canon andreplace them with a couple of these.(But why does Amazon refer to theanthologist as a "photographer"?Let alone ACD!) ... Wonderful drawings of fairies
There are a couple of versions of this book. Let me share some brief history of this book with you. In 1869 artist Richard Doyle published a book consisting of his wonderful pictures of a fairyland and its inhabitants, accompanies by a very short poem by W. Allingham. Then in 1884, the drawings were used in another book, this time accompanies by a much longer poem by Andrew Lang, that really works to flesh out a story. In that edition, five pictures were edited out as not working with the poem it seems. Worse yet, they printed many of the illustrations in black & white. In 1979, a special new edition, combining both of the poems, and restoring all the original art, in color was printed by Derrydale. Since then there have been a couple of reprints of that version, as well as "Princess Nobody", which is the same illustrations and just the Andrew Lang text. All of this gets confusing if you are a collector of children'The King and Queen of the country next to Fairyland long for a child and are finally blessed with a daughter, the Princess Niente. s illustrated books and want to have the right version.
The best edition I have seen is the 1979 edition by Derrydale, the reproduction of the images, strong binding and pictorial boards that match the dustjacket, the colors of ink, and quality of paper and binding are very superior to the other versions in my humble opinion. It is the first edition in that state, and the pulbisher treated it very well.
As for the story, in Fairyland there is a lot of activity, such as the Great Snail Race, or dancing under the mushrooms at night with elves. We get to see the Queen of the Water Fairies, Princess Nobody, the Wicked Dwarf, and Prince Comical. The fairies ride frogs and birds, and have an air carriage pulled by butterflies.The King of the land next to Fairyland. A Classic Fairy Tale
Fe fi fo fum, I smell good reading, that's loads of Fun! Such is the experience reading this classic children's fairy tale.

The story is about Jack, who lives in a quiet town, and yearns more than anything else for a life of adventure. So when he is old enough he sets out to slay evil giants who steal from the little. As he slays giant after giant, he saves victims which earn him popularity and Jack acquires brand new weapons that help him slay other more menacing giants.His deeds gain notice from the king and makes him a hero, and gives Jack a happy ending with a princess and a big estate.

The illustrations are wonderfully crafted, and complement this classic story well.

The story can be a little violent but there is obviously nothing excessive. The story tends to reach the interests of boys more than girls. I highly recommend this classic tale, and hope you give it a try.

A Wonderful Imagination with a Taste for the Grotesque.
The author Richard Doyle was the son of a political caricaturist who went on to become a very gifted artist in his own right.In addition to working at some famous magazine of the time (called "Punch"), he also did the illustrations for the "Fairy Ring" (1846) which was a collection of newly translated Grimm's Fairy Tales.He combined a wonderful imagination with a taste for the grotesque.In 1842, while still a teenager he took a popular collection of traditional giant tales out of "The Child's Own Book" and retold it with such wonderful illustrations that it turned it into a classic.This is not "Jack and the Beanstalk".There is no magic beans, or golden goose.It's the story of a little boy named Jack and his adventures as he has to fight and kill several giants in some very gruesome ways.I don't know if I'd recommend this book for anyone faint of heart.In most tales he outsmarts the giants.In others he uses special gifts he has obtained, including a Cap of Knowledge, Shoes of Vast Swiftness, a Sword that can cut through anything, and a Coat that turns him invisible.The giants are very mean, and kidnap and eat people, but still for some reason or other, I couldn't help but feel sorry for some of them at times when Jack, who was already so much smarter than the giants, also becomes better equipped than them as well.Towards the end I guess I got the feeling that he had an unfair advantage.During one of his later adventures Jack briefly travels with King Arthur's son and eventually becomes a Knight of the Round Table.It was a very entertaining book, but a quick read.It was only 92 pages in length and most of those were taken up with the picturesque illustrations.

Don't miss this classic.
This book, a title in the Everyman's Library Children's Classics series, is a retelling of an old, old story. Richard Doyle was 18 in 1842. He copied the text of this book from a fairy tale that was already hundreds of years old, and he illustrated it with his own drawings, turning it into a picture book. He did this for his own amusement; he did not try to publish it. But five years after he died, his family published it, in 1888.

The book is chock-full of drawings. Full-page and half-page pictures, plus small paintings within the sentences themselves, can be found throughout. And the text itself is fun to read, especially from our modern-day viewpoint and what we've learned to expect from stories. For example, you won't find as much conflict and drama as you're used to. Jack decides to kill a giant, he goes out, and he kills the giant. He never loses, and the giants don't really put up much of a fight. But the story is still interesting because Jack defeats many different kinds of giants --- one-headed, two-headed, and even three-headed ones. And slaying isn't Jack's only claim to fame. Sometimes he doesn't kill the monsters, he just outsmarts them.

The old-fashioned language of the story is fun to read, and some of the storyteller's phrasing might even make you laugh. Here is an example: "Now Jack, though only the son of a poor farmer living in Cornwall, was very clever, for he not only fought and wrestled with all the youths within twenty miles round but he beat them likewise. Can it be wondered at that under these circumstances he should be his father's hope and his mother's joy and that the neighbours should look upon him with the greatest respect?" We might not admire little boys who fight quite as much as they admired them hundreds of years ago, but for Jack's chosen occupation, it was a necessity and it brought him great renown.

You will love the pictures, the fast pace, and exciting exploits in Jack's story. King Arthur even shows up on the scene, fitting in perfectly in this fairy-tale world of pure-hearted knights and fair damsels, castles and moats, and magicians with their enchantments. Don't miss this classic.
