    Extractions: The research that I am interested in pursuing this summer involves an intense investigation of the techniques of three generations of Wyeths: N.C Wyeth (1882-1945), Andrew Wyeth, (b. 1917), and Jamie Wyeth (b. 1946) and how their techniques might affect the present and future conservation of their works. My advisor has agreed to sponsor this research and enfold me in a number of projects she is presently working on. We are also discussing the possibility of having the research culminate in a paper to be published and made available for future conservators faced with the challenge of conserving a work by one of the Wyeth artists. Since the best way to assess an artist’s technique is to examine their work in a very intimate manner, a majority of the research will be collected through hands-on examination and treatment of the Wyeth family’s work. In order to understand and treat works effectively however, a certain amount of background library work will be required as well. I plan to search N.C. Wyeth’s collected letters for references to technique of specific works, examine previous interviews with Jamie and Andrew Wyeth, and research what other artists and critics have said about the Wyeth’s work. Working with my advisor, interviews with Andrew and Jamie Wyeth may also be arranged. Although seemingly an insignificant part of the overall research, the preliminary library work will be vital to understanding the individual paintings and arriving at an accurate conclusion regarding each artist’s technique.

    Extractions: Excerpt: I needed to write an article on our Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation oral history file for a London publication and was given a very short deadline. My assistant came out to the file at Winterthur and quickly provided the index and organization which had been keenly needed for several years. She demonstrated amazing powers of concentration, energy, and good sense. (This required that she stay in a small room at the bottom of the library for hours on end; she was never bored, never complaining, and truly picked up on the significance of the file and its contents to her own career and study in Art Conservation). She could provide a unique service both to my research and to the care of the Wyeth paintings and archives in local collections if this project goes forth. She could use the interviews and materials I have gathered thus far to understand the particular problems in the conservation of the work of Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. Andrew Wyeth has been using egg tempera on gessoed panels for more than 60 years. Many of these works exhibit a white efflorescence and pinpoint flaking that is of great concern to both the Wyeth family and current owners of their works. These works must be handled and discussed by someone who understands these unique characteristics and current best methods of care.

This summer The Speed Art Museum will present an exhibition featuring the works of three generations of this compelling family of artists. Andrew Wyeth (American, born 1917) Cape Coat , 1982, Drybrush At the heart of this exhibition is a group of watercolor and tempera paintings and pencil sketches by Andrew Wyeth depicting one of his favorite models, Helga Testorf. Recognized as one of the leaders of the realist tradition, Andrew Wyeth met Helga, a 38-year-old Prussian immigrant, in his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania in 1971. Working secretly over the next 15 years, Andrew created approximately 45 paintings and 200 sketches of Helga, many of which will be featured in the exhibition. In addition to these now-famous works by Andrew, Wyeth: Three Generations will feature paintings by Andrew's father, noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth; Andrew's son Jamie, an accomplished painter and illustrator in his own right; and Andrew's sisters, Carolyn, Henriette, and Ann.
