Extractions: Private Collection France European Art Born at Dieppe on 8 August 1869 Louis Valtat studied at the Hoche secondary school in Versailles, where his parents were living. In 1886, the year when Vincent Van Gogh arrived in Paris for the first time, Louis, aged 17, applied for admission to the Ecole des Beaux Arts, where his teachers were to be Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre, and later Benjamin Constant. Winner of the Jauvin d'Attainville prize in 1890, he went on to install his studio in the rue de La Glacie' in Paris, and the first paintings he entered for the Salon des Artistes Indendants in 1893 were scenes of the daily life in the surrounding streets, like Sur le Boulevard, a canvas that was favourably commented by art critic and writer Felix Feneon. At the end of 1894, in collaboration with Henri de Toulouse Lautrec and aided by Albert Andre he created the d'or for the theatre "L'Oeuvre" at the request of Lugne Poe' His engravings and paintings were hung at the exhibition of the Salon des Cent. He was suffering from tuberculosis and went down to Banyuls on the Mediterranean coast, where George-Daniel de Monfreid introduced him to Aristide Maillol ; together they made a number of trips to Figueras in Spain.

Extractions: THE LAST FAUVE PAINTER Louis Valtat, born in Dieppe, Normandy, on August 8th 1869, painted many subjects, nudes, still lifes, landscapes and other themes during his lifetime besides being a pioneer of Fauvism. Valtat was much interested in the use of colour directly in relation with its symbolic effect detached from its real significance. However he never was an inconditional member of the Nabi group and kept his own independence of mind. His works showed less spirituality than those of Maurice Denis but were more spontaneous regarding violent contrasting colours and such characterization became more obvious after 1900. in 1895 or the in 1895, now in the Paris museum of Modern Art. Such work, with its green and red contrasts in the houses painted in the background, notably served to prove that he was a true pioneer of Fauvism almost ten years before that movement started to blossom. Valtat was probably at his best painting flowers and still lifes and like Van Gogh, who died in 1890, he was the only painter who would apply pure colours on the canvas during the mid 1890s thus showing the way to painters who were to belong to the incoming Fauve movement.

Extractions: Tes Cheveux is a beautiful and exceptional rare example of Louis Valtats earliest work whilst he was linked to the circle of the Nabis in the 1890s. The use of an expressive deliberately pattern-making line, the emphasis on texture and surface, and the typical domestic intime theme, show him at the most inspired period of his youth. It was a development from such works as this which was to lead him on into the expressionistic strongly coloured paintings of the Fauves when he made his name with the public.
