Extractions: was established by Sir William Hooker in 1829, through publication of Stanhopea insignis in the Botanical Magazine. The genus is named for the Rt Hon. Philip Henry Stanhope, Earl of Stanhope, President of the Medico-Botanical Society of London 1829-1837. Extractions: Stanhope came from an aristocratic, monied background, and was educated, unsurprisingly, at Eton and Oxford. It would be wrong to imagine that his privileged background gave him an easy entre into the world of art, as his parents were opposed to his becoming an artist, and actively discouraged his artistic ambitions. Though older than Burne-Jones, Stanhope was strongly influenced by him and was initially a follower of his. As he matured as an artist the painter developed his own distinctive style. His works were allegorical and mythical, and he was a great colourist. Initially Stanhope studied with G F Watts, with whom he visited Italy twice in the 1850s. He worked on the unsuccessful murals at the Oxford Union in the also in the 1850s, meeting Rossetti at this time. The painter sometimes exhibited at the Royal Academy, though he mainly used the Grosvenor, the Dudley, and the New galleries. Stanhope suffered severely from asthma, and as a result moved to live in Florence in 1880. Burne-Jones felt that Stanhopes art suffered from his move to Italy, which took him away from his artistic milieu, and the painter regarded himself as an exile. Florence remained his home for the rest of his life, and he painted frescoes in the Anglican church there. Stanhope was the uncle and teacher of

Extractions: The present owners of Cannon Hall, Cawthorne are the local Council. The estate was purchased sometime after 1990 from the then owner, Simon Fraser. Mr. AG. Lees was the agent at this time for Cannon Hall and held the estate records. Purportedly, Little John's longbow and his thigh bone were kept here at Cannon Hall until the 1950's. Houses that were bought at some time by the estate were. Jowett House, Dale House, Banks Hall, Flash-House (from C.O. Rowley of Barnsley in 1829). The Spencer-Stanhope papers are at the Sheffield Library and the Cartwright Museum in Bradford. Coal pits took on more importance during their tenure. John was a huntsman, a bold rider, a hard drinker with a violent temper and speech, but open and warm hearted with good manners, a paternalistic approach. He was scholarly and possessed a large library. He was never interested in politics but became a racehorse owner and ran cockfights on Sunday in Cawthorne Park.
