Extractions: 03:00 AM Aug. 17, 1999 PT SAN FRANCISCO When Mexico's master artist Diego Rivera created the mural Pan American Unity for the 1940 World's Fair, he fused images of art and technology to unite the peoples of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. World War II interrupted plans for a library to display the mural. It remained hidden until Rivera's death in 1957, when it was transported to the San Francisco City College theater, where it remains today widely unknown to the public. See also: 'Web Seance' Summons Art A new multimedia project hopes to revive Rivera's ideas in the digital and virtual realm. An interactive kiosk and Web site , launches 18 August at City College. They will attempt to restore the mural to public prominence, even as it returns to Rivera's theme of blending art and technology. "The mural represents a powerful historical statement of what has gone on in this century," said Julia Bergman, City College archivist. The multimedia project will expose the public to one of Rivera's most significant and unrecognized masterpieces, she said, "a work of art that is so universal for so many people."

September 1999) Die Ausstellung Diego Rivera, Kunst und Revolution 1933 begann er mit der Arbeit an einem großen Wandgemälde am Rockefeller Center in New York City. Als er sich weigerte ein Portrait von Lenin wieder zu entfernen, entließ ihn Rockefeller und ließ das Gemälde zerstören. Rivera antwortete ihm, indem er die Entwürfe für eine Freske im Palast der Schönen Künste in Mexiko-Stadt verwandte. In Bezug auf den Konflikt in New York sagte er, dies war "das einzig richtige Bild, das in dem Gebäude angebracht werden konnte [als]ein exakter und konkreter Ausdruck der gesellschaftlichen Lage unter dem gegenwärtigen Kapitalismus und Hinweis auf den Weg, dem die Menschheit folgen muss, um Hunger, Unterdrückung, Chaos und Krieg abzuschaffen." 1938 arbeitete er mit Trotzki und André Breton zusammen an dem , einem Dokument, das auf dem tiefen Zusammenhang zwischen authentischer Kunst und der revolutionären Bewegung der Arbeiterklasse gründet. Es ist die Frucht der Diskussionen zwischen dem Führer des Weltsozialismus, dem Führer der surrealistischen Literatur und einem der besten Repräsentanten der modernen Malerei zu einem Moment, als der Faschismus progressive Tendenzen der Kunst als "degeneriert" bezeichnete und zerstörte und die Stalinisten unabhängige, kreative Arbeit als "faschistisch" denunzierten.

Extractions: Mexican painter, the most celebrated figure in the revival of monumental fresco painting that is Mexico's most distinctive contribution to modern art. He visited Paris in 1909 and after a brief return to Mexico he settled there from 1911-20. During this time he became one of the lions of cafe society and was friendly with many leading artists. He became familiar with modern movements, but although he made some early experiments with Cubism for example, his mature art was firmly rooted in Mexican tradition. At about the time of the Russian Revolution he had become interested in politics and in the role art could play in society. In 1920-21 he visited Italy to study Renaissance frescos (already thinking in terms of a monumental public art), then returned to his homeland, eager to be of service to the Mexican Revolution. In 1920 Alvaro Obregon, an art lover as well as a reformist had been elected President of Mexico, and Rivera, who was an extremely forceful personality, swiftly emerged as the leading artist in the programme of murals he initiated glorifying the history and people of the country in a spirit of revolutionary fervour. Many examples of his work are in public buildings in Mexico City, and they are often on a huge scale, a tribute to his enormous energy. His most ambitious scheme, in the National Palace, covering the history of Mexico, was begun in 1929; it was still unfinished at his death, but it contains some of his most magnificent work. Rivera's murals were frankly didactic, intended to inspire a sense of nationalist and socialist identity in a still largely illiterate population; their glorification of creative labour or their excoriation of capitalism can be crude, but his best work has astonishing vigour. His skill in choreographing his incident- and figure- packed compositions, in combining traditional and modern subject- matter, and in blending stylised and realistic images is formidable.

Born in a small Mexican town in 1907, Kahlo contracted polio at 6 and suffered severe injuries in a bus accident at 18. At a prestigious school in Mexico City, she met artists, Communists, visionaries, and the muralist Diego Rivera. Her marriage to Rivera, interrupted by a year-long divorce, was composed of devoted passion, stormy affairs, mutual artistic admiration, and loneliness. Over shadowed by the larger-than-life Rivera, Kahlo didn't receive artistic recognition until a 1938 solo exhibition in New York. Her primitive Surrealistic paintings shifted then to themes of religious symbolism and death until she passed away in 1954.
