    Extractions: Towards the end of his life, the painter Thomas Moran wrote: "It has often occurred to me as a curious and anomalous fact, that American artists are prone to seek the subjects for their art in foreign lands, to the almost entire exclusion of their own.... That there is a nationalism in art needs no proof. It is bred from a knowledge of and sympathy with [one's own] surroundings and no foreigner can imbue himself with a spirit of a country not his own. Therefore he should paint his own land...." As a young man, Moran did just what he admonished other artists for doing: he went to Europe to study painting and find inspiration. But at the end of his prolific career he was more closely associated with the landscapes of the American West than almost any other painter. Moran first achieved national recognition for the work he created while accompanying a geological and geographic survey headed by Ferdinand V. Hayden. In the late 19th century, the U.S. government made the surveying of Western territory an integral part of its domestic policy. Washington wanted to investigate the West with a view to promoting settlement and commerce and exploiting natural resources. From 1867-1879, the Federal government supported four Great Surveys, each extremely ambitious in scope; each expected to provide a comprehensive written report, accompanied by visual materials. Hayden's own instructions from the Secretary of the Interior were "to secure as full materials as possible for the illustration of your final report, such as sketches, photographs, etc."

    Extractions: Thomas Moran was born in 1837 in England and came to the U.S. with his family at the age of seven. He was apprenticed to an engraver at Philadelphia and was a landscape painter before he reached 20. He returned to Britain to study the great landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. He married Mary Nimmo, a Scottish immigrant, in 1863. He arrived at Virginia City, MT, in July 1871. He was 34. He was there to accompany the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, known as the Hayden Survey for its leader Ferdinand V. Hayden. William H. Jackson, noted photographer, was also on the trip. This was the first official exploration of the area that would become Yellowstone National Park. He was virtually unknown then, but his paintings of Yellowstone country helped convince Congress to establish the park in 1872. The government wanted information about the area's resources and potential for development. Businesses were interested in putting railroads through for tourism. Jay Cooke advanced Moran $500 against his future paintings to pay for the trip. This was his first trip west and the first time he had ridden a horse. He rode from Virginia City to Fort Ellis, near Bozeman. Then a military escort road with them the rest of the way. Moran sketched everything that interested him in watercolor and took many notes so he could later refine the pictures. His favorite place was Yellowstone Canyon. A month into the trip, he took a train home to do some serious painting. The first canvas was a 7 x 12 Ft. painting of the canyon and falls that he called "Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone." He sold the painting for $10,000 to Congress, who displayed it in the lobby of the Senate building. After that, he started making good money, but he really just wanted to paint beautiful scenery.

Parks Police Fire CommDev PubWorks Govern Finance Admin HR In 1871, three years after the railroad had arrived in Green River City, a fellow named Thomas Moran stepped from a railroad car at Green River. It was reported that he found an instant fascination with the west and the eroded cliffs surrounding the Green River, of which he made the first sketches of his journey. Moran was 34 years of age at the time and was in route to Idaho to meet a Dr. Ferdinand D Hayden who was about to make his survey of the little-explored country of the Yellowstone for the United States government. Also with the expedition was another soon-to-be-famous artist, William Henry Jackson, renowned photographer of the westward movement. In addition to his sketching, Moran worked extensively with Jackson on his photography. Moran's "first sketch made in the West" was of Green River's toll gate rock and the palisades just west of the town. Using these sketches and others he made on subsequent trips, he produced several well-known oil and watercolor paintings of the area during his artistic career. He revisited this same subject time and time again, it being one of his most popular scenes. He escaped duplicating himself by showing the scenes under different conditions and moods. It was reported that no two Green River pictures were ever exactly alike, although their one constant was the looming cliffs of the Green River valley. His popular "The Cliffs of Green River" was painted in 1874. His final painting of the scene was made in 1918 when he was 81.
