Extractions: Louis Aston Knight was the son of internationally famed American artist Daniel Ridgeway Knight. He was born in Paris on August 3, 1873, and died in New York City, May 8,1948. Starting in 1892, Aston Knight attended Academie Julian for several years, where he studied classical figure painting under Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury. Early on he and his Father realized that there should be a basic distinction between their respective artwork. They reached an informal understanding: Ridgeway Knight always introduced one or more figures in his landscapes, whereas Aston Knight never placed figures in his scenes. Luis Aston is the painter of rivers and of reflections who succeeded in constantly placing water in the foreground and never repeat himself; catching the thousands of aspects of streams and mills, from the Seine in Paris , the Venetians lagunas, the beaches in Normandy or the Dutch canals Very prolific, Aston Knight was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salons from 1894 to 1924, in London and in the United States (Mainly at Knoedler New York) and was a member of the French and American Art Society. He also was a member of the Rochester Art Club in Rochester New York. He lived mainly in France in Poissy, Roleboise and Beaumont-le Roger where his 17th century manor has become a tourist attraction.

Extractions: From Vol 2 Issue 5 - September, 2000 I spent my happy childhood on a backcountry homestead on the shore of a large and restless lake, but some of the water that most impressed me is caught within the frames of some paintings by my Great Uncle Louis. Several of his works, large and small, hung on the walls of our log home on Adams Lake and sometimes the oil lamps and flickering fire on a long winter night would seem to bring them to life. They are with me still. Louis Aston Knight, who died at the age of 74 in New York In 1948, was considered one of the best American landscape painters of his time, but to his pals he was the running-water painter or The Man in High-Water Boots. Capturing the mood, In watercolors, of swift-flowing rivers and streams was one of his specialties, and he often stood out in the current to do it. Uncle Louis was broad and powerful, reputedly able to lift a man of medium size off the floor, at arms' length. He liked his food and his booze, played mild practical jokes, traveled the world, painted hundreds of pictures, and laughed a lot.
