Kensett September 18 - December 21, 2001 J ohn Frederick Kensett (1816-1872) was one of the leading figures of the Hudson River School, the renowned group of artists who celebrated the nineteenth-century American landscape. Kensett compiled hundreds of pencil sketches while touring the North American continent during the warmer months of the year. These drawings then served as source material for the paintings he created during the winter in his studio. A selection of Kensett's costumed figure studies, rendered in pencil and watercolor, will complement the exhibit's display of the artist's better-known American landscape sketches. Kensett produced numerous figurative drawings during his years spent overseas, as consideration of the human form was an intrinsic element of the revered European artistic tradition. Leslie Stone An important member of the second generation of the Hudson River School, John Kensett is considered a major exponent of the movement known as luminism. Born in Chesire, Connecticut, he had little formal training but spent considerable time in his early career absorbing the culture of Europe. By 1847 he returned to America, disregarding much of what he had seen abroad, and began to paint the tranquil effects of light and atmosphere in the vein of the Hudson River School. This emphasis on quietude marked a shift among American landscape painters away from the picturesque toward a contemplative mood. Kensett came to favor compositions typified by this undated painting, in which solid form is juxtaposed next to a void to emphasize light and openness. The painting derives its composition from Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), the seventeenth-century French artist much admired by the Hudson River School painters. The large mass of trees on one side and the dissipation of forms in an aerial perspective of hazy atmospheric light are common Claudian devices. Mountain Landscape Like many of the landscape painters of the period, Kensett's view of the sublime in nature was one of harmony rather than the tumultuous state associated with that term in European paintings. This outlook, in turn, was tied to the transcendental outlook of the philosophers and writers of mid-nineteenth century America. For Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, William Cullen Bryant, and Washington Irving, as well as painters Cole, Durand, and Kensett, the unspoiled American landscape embodied spiritual, moral, and democratic values. Within the tranquility of nature, typified by Kensett's

John Driscoll, director of New York City's Babcock Galleries and a noted scholar on the works of the American 19th-century landscape painter John Frederick Kensett, has announced the preparation of The John Frederick Kensett Catalogue Raisonné Kensett was born in Connecticut in 1816 and rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most noted and beloved artists of his time. He was an influential member of the National Academy of Design, the Century Association, and was a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which today is a major repository of his paintings. Upon Kensett's death in 1872, a memorial exhibition was held at the National Academy. This was followed by a sale of more than 500 of his paintings, which realized the then astonishing total of more than $125,000. The location of some of these and other Kensett paintings documented in 19th-century records is unknown today. An aim of the catalogue raisonné is to complete a list of works recorded during Kensett's lifetime and to identify those paintings, drawings, watercolors, and engravings that are extant. Driscoll believes that the catalogue raisonné will lead to the rediscovery of works currently thought to have been lost or destroyed. Anyone with information about Kensett or wishing to have paintings considered for inclusion in the catalogue raisonné may write to Huntley Eikenburg, Curator, The John Frederick Kensett Catalogue Raisonné, Babcock Galleries, 724 Fifth Avenue, Eleventh Floor, New York, NY 10019.
