   Extractions: Arthur Hughes was born in London on 27 January 1832, to Edward and Amy Hughes. He entered Archbishop Tenison's Grammar School in about 1838, and while there displayed an early talent for drawing; in 1846 he entered the School of Design, Somerset House where he studied under Alfred Stevens. In 1847 he enrolled in the Antique Schools at the Royal Academy, winning a silver medal in 1849 for a drawing from the Antique, and in that same year exhibited his first finished painting, Musidora , at the Royal Academy. 1850 was the most important year of his life: he first discovered Pre-Raphaelitism by reading the Germ ; he met Tryphena Foord, his future wife and mother of his six children; and met Alexander Munro Dante Gabriel Rossetti , and Ford Madox Brown , thenceforward being converted to their cause.     Extractions: Arthur Hughes and his daughter Agnes, photographed by Lewis Carroll. Being of a quiet and retiring nature, very little is known of his later career. After about 1870 his work lost its impetus. Hughes was the original illustrator of Tom Brown's Schooldays , and George MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind and The Princess and the Goblin . He also illustrated Allingham's Music Master and many other novels, children's books and periodicals. He worked with Christina Rossetti on Sing Song in 1871. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery and New Gallery. He died on 22 December 1915. A sale of his works took place at Christie's after his death on 21 November 1921. A small exhibition of Hughes' works was held at the Museum of Richmond, Surrey, United Kingdom in the late 1990s. External website

    Extractions: Arthur Hughes was born in London and studied to become a painter at the Royal Academy Schools. There he met Rossetti Millais and Holman Hunt , and joined them in making the mural decoration of the Oxford Union. Hughes remained under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites , and many of his paintings follow, more or less closely, the themes produced by members of the Brotherhood. Among his most well-known works can be listed Home from Sea (1863), showing a returned sailor boy weeping over a parental grave while his sister looks on, The Eve of St Agnes (1856) and a rather charming Annunciation (1858). He produced a series of pictures of lovers, making a feature of clinging ivy on old trees, and he is definitely one of the more out of doors Pre-Raphaelites. As well as being a painter, Hughes became one of the more successful Pre-Raphaelite illustrators , drawing many pictures for the illustrated magazines and books of the 1860s and onwards. Several later illustrators followed his style for nursery and fairy tale books, among them Helen Stratton . The picture below is taken from At the Back of the North Wind of 1870.
