Extractions: Click image to enlarge According to art historians, The Golden Age of Fairy Painting occurred in 19th-century England during the reign of Queen Victoria, casting its spell of enchantment on artists right up to the present day. During that time, fairy pictures by eminent painters were hung in respectable galleries, viewed by the kind of large audiences that now flock to blockbuster films. "Ill Omen: Girl in the East Wind with Ravens Crossing the Moon" Click image to enlarge often drawn from myths and legends, rarely painted "the little people" themselves yet a single fairy picture by John Everett Millais, "Ferdinand Lured by Ariel," was much admired by subsequent painters (although the original buyer rejected the picture because the fairies were "too green"). Younger painters in the "second wave" of Pre-Raphaelitism (including E. R. Hughes, Eleanor Fortescue-Birckdale, John Atkinson Grimshaw, the Birmingham Group, and the Celtic Revivalists in Scotland) turned to fairy subjects more regularly not only in gallery paintings but in a wide variety of arts & crafts. Margaret Macdonald McIntosh, Frances Macdonald MacNair, Jessie M. King, Annie French, and the other "Glasgow Girls" in Scotland from the 1880s onward created fairy imagery in metalwork, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and even furniture design, in addition to gallery paintings, murals, and illustrated books.

Extractions: I came upon this book by accident. I'd been searching for antique childrens' book illustrations when - lo and behold! - this flew into my lap. The paintings are exquisite and quite astonishing, considering they were rendered in an emotionally stifled period. There is plenty of whimsy here, but more of the fantastic. Some of the artists were said to have gone on opium binges in order to render the capricious fairy world on canvas. Regardless of how they did it, they set the stage for a new set of ideals: secret places, strange creatures, wings, fangs, claws.......

Extractions: Victorian Fairy Painting Opening at The Frick Collection, Brings New York Audiences an Unexpected Opportunity to Experience this Critically Acclaimed Exhibition October 14, 1998 through January 17, 1999 Attracting record crowds in British and American venues, the exhibition Victorian Fairy Painting comes to The Frick Collection, extending its tour and offering New York audiences an unexpected opportunity to view this unique presentation. Victorian Fairy Painting , on view October 14, 1998 through January 17, 1999, represents the first comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to this distinctly British genre, which was critically and commercially popular from the early nineteenth century through the beginning of World War I. The paintings, works on paper, and objects, approximately thirty four in number, have been selected by Edgar Munhall , Curator of The Frick Collection, from the original, larger touring exhibition, which was organized by the University of Iowa Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Fairy painting brought together many opposing elements in the collective psyche and artistic sensibility of its time: rich subject-matter, an escape from the grim elements of an industrial society, an indulgence of new attitudes towards sex, a passion for the unknown, and a denial of the exactitude of photography. Drawing on literary inspiration from Shakespeares

Extractions: http://www.indigogroup.co.uk/edge/ Victorian Fairy Paintings , an exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts from November 1997 to February 1998, acted as an introduction to a body of unusual paintings by some very odd people. Blinking in the unaccustomed sunlight afterwards, I found myself thinking how very normal the average hobgoblin is, compared to the slippery recesses of the Victorian mind. It all starts with Shakespeare. Being part of the literary canon, the Bard was sacrosanct: and since A Midsummer Night's Dream and T he Tempest dealt with creatures of the imagination, they formed a pretext under which the wildest fantasy could be introduced onto canvases otherwise dedicated to antique figure drawing. The artists who repeatedly portrayed the meeting of Oberon and Titania were quite indifferent to any visual clues in the text; instead they explore a strange, repressed convention by which the central figures are tall, graceful, classical nudes, while on the outskirts of the painting there are beings more grotesque and diminutive, who do violent and sexual things half-hidden under the leaves.

London Student Issue 10 - Arts Victorian Fairy London Student Issue 10 - arts comment on the exhibition by Christina Patrick.Category Arts Art History Victorian Fairy Painting This theme is continued in the hands (or brush) of Joseph Noel Paton (18211901)and john anster fitzgerald (known as Fairy fitzgerald for his obsession with http://www.londonstudent.org.uk/10issue/arts/fairy.htm
Extractions: Fantastical Folk Fairies Christina Patrick Folk culture in Britain has always included tales However, Fitzgerald definitely paints the darker side of the subject, with pictures of dreaming people and mostly malicious ethereal images floating around them. There is a definite connection made in the work of Paton and Fitzgerald with the world of drug-induced nightmares and that of fairies and goblins. Laudanum, a hallucinogen so widely used that it was called the aspirin of the 19th century, is thought to have been the root of much of this fantasy creativeness and also the more sinister levels that exist in much of the work. Come Onto These Yellow Sands is a scene from The Tempest , framed by a painted proscenium arch decorated with theatrical scenes, and contains some of the most breathtakingly beautiful Pre-Raphaelite nudes. Their skin is delicately painted in the most minute changing of shades since some figures are almost translucent in appearance, with others seemingly glowing with a magical light against the deepest blue night sky and murky green seas. In my opinion, this is the most captivating of all the pieces on display - more for the style than the overall themed fairy topic. Containing some stunning art, this exhibition is a lovely way to spend an hour or so. However, much depends on personal opinion of the varying artists as opposed to the thematic grouping of the pieces. If these are artists that you like, then the ticket price is definitely worth it, but you may find yourself quickly walking by quite a few of the exhibits.

Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T) is a progressive degenerative disease attacking young children of all races, ethnic and economic groups. It is like having muscular dystrophy, immuno-deficiency, and cancer all at the same time! Even though the disease is genetically inherited , these children appear normal at birth. Yet, they are usually dependent on wheelchair by the age of 10 and rarely survive past their 20th birthday! As of now, there is no cure or treatment for A-T. People who carry only one copy of the defective gene (i.e., carriers ) do not develop A-T, but they exhibit high sensitivity to radiation and are 5 times more likely to develop cancer and 3 times more likely to develop diabetes mellitus (compared to non-carriers). As yet, there is no laboratory testing available to tell who is a carrier and who is not. Unfortunately, carriers of the ATM gene are relatively
