Extractions: ~*~ John Anster Fitzgerald ~*~ Son of a much ridiculed poet, William Thomas Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald appears to have had little or no formal training, but from 1845 he was exhibiting at the British Institution and the Royal Academy. Although he is chiefly known for his fairy pieces, Fitzgerald seems to have made a living as a portrait painter and illustrator, although he also painted genre scenes. By the late 1850s he had become a regular contributor to The Illustrated London News, and in 1864 he was a candidate for the Society of British Artists. He was a member of the Maddox Street Sketching Club. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1845 to 1902. Like his father, Fitzgerald played on his Irish ancestry and was remembered by members of the Savage Club for his burlesque imitations of old-time actors and theatrical managers.

Advertiser Subscriber "Fairies in a Bird's Nest," John Anster Fitzgerald, circa 1860. NEW YORK CITY - Attracting record crowds in British and American venues, "Victorian Fairy Painting" continues at the Frick Collection. This is the first comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to this distinctly British genre, which was critically and commercially popular from the early Nineteenth Century through the beginning of World War I. The 34 paintings, works on paper, and objects were selected by Edgar Munhall, curator of the Frick Collection, from the original, larger touring exhibition, which was organized by the University of Iowa Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Fairy painting brought together many opposing elements in the collective psyche and artistic sensibility of its time: rich subject-matter, an escape from the grim elements of an industrial society, an indulgence of new attitudes towards sex, a passion for the unknown, and a denial of the exactitude of photography. Drawing on literary inspiration from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to Sir Walter Scott's Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border

Extractions: William Shakespeare, The Tempest , Act 5, Epilogue In his final speech, Prospero recognizes the necessity for a friendly collusion between the audience and the performer in order that the illusion of fantasy prevails. Victorian fairy painters and illustrators depended upon a similar supportive relationship as they conjured up "realms of faerie" for appreciative spectators. Their enthusiastic admirers included such diverse luminaries as Queen Victoria Charles Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll), William Makepeace Thackeray , Charles Dickens, John Ruskin , and Samuel Carter Hall. Fairy paintings appeared regularly in Royal Academy exhibitions throughout the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth. Most of the artists from the early Victorian period took their subjects from the plays of Shakespeare, most notably A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest , and the poetry of Milton and Spenser. They usually added imaginative details to these works culled from folklore and fairy tales. An even larger audience for fairy images emerged with the expanding readership of illustrated books and magazines after midcentury.
