Extractions: De Morgan began lessons at the age of 15, followed by prize-winning studies at South Kensington and Slade Schools. Her exhibition debut was in 1876 at the Dudley Gallery and followed that with a show at the Grosvenor Gallery, where she would exhibit regularly. In 1887 she married William De Morgan, ceramicist and associate of William Morris, with whom she shared a deep interest in spiritualism. Her preferred subjects included sacred and allegorical figures and scenes, and legends with a moral or social message. Together, they devised a painting method utilizing glycerine which, though too troublesome to pursue, produced the clear, bright tones she sought. In 1916, her horror of the war led her to mount an exhibition of 13 works for the benefit of the Red Cross.

Extractions: Name : Evelyn De Morgan Born : London, England 30 Aug 1855 Died : London, England 2 May 1919 Mary Evelyn Pickering (later to become Mrs William De Morgan) was born in London, the eldest child of Percival Andree Pickering, a senior barrister, and Anna Maria Wilhelmina Spencer-Stanhope, the sister of the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Rodham Spencer-Stanhope. Coming from a wealthy aristocratic family, Evelyn benefited from an excellent home education where she began drawing lessons at the age of 15. It appears there was little parental opposition to her chosen career and, at the age of 17, she commenced study at the Slade School of Art in London under the tutelage of Edward J Poynter. The following year she was to win there a series of awards: Prize and Silver Medal for Painting from the Antique, First Certificate for Drawing from the Antique , and Third Equal Certificate for Composition - accompanied by a Slade scholarship for three years, leading to yet more awards. At around this time, Evelyn's uncle, John Rodham Spencer-Stanhope, bought the Villa Nuti in Bellosquardo, Florence, moving permanently there in 1880. This provided a convenient means for her to travel and study in Italy - which she first did in 1875, visiting Rome, Perugia and Asisi, thence to Florence in 1876. The many classical and artistic facets of this city were to have an enduring impression on her subsequent work as an artist. Evelyn sold her first painting

Extractions: Biography velyn Pickering, who was born in London the daughter of upper-middle class parents and the niece of Rodhamn Spencer-Stanhope , was a painter within the circle of later Pre-Raphaelites who took their inspiration from the more romantic paintings of Rossetti and Burne-Jones . Her early ambition to paint was discouraged by her parents but later she was permitted to become a student at the Slade School and in due course to study in Italy, in Rome and in Florence. As a young woman she exhibited Ariadne in Naxos at the first Exhibition of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877. Her mature style, which is distinguished by a precision of detail and a fondness for mythological subjects, was derived in part from her first artistic mentor, Roddam Spencer- Stanhope, with whom she frequently painted and visited with following his permanent departure for Tuscany in 1880. She was also profoundly influenced by Edward Burne-Jones who was a close friend. Her painting was admired by a circle of fellow-artists. William Blake Richmond said of her: 'Her industry was astonishing, and the amount which she achieved was surprising, especially considering the infinite care with which she studied every detail . . . " George Frederic Watts pronounced her 'the first woman-artist of the day if not of all time. Evelyn Pickering married the potter
