    Extractions: John Brett was born near Reigate, Surrey, and studied at the RA Schools in London. He was greatly impressed by the writings of John Ruskin on art and geology, and by the works of the Pre-Raphaelites . Meeting J. W. Inchbold , another outdoor realist painter, added to Brett's determination to paint 'detail in nature'. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856, and the following year showed The Glacier of Rosenlaui , an incredibly detailed landscape study illustrating how the shape of the land could be governed by ice action, and showing three blatantly ice-deposited rocks in the foreground. This picture established Brett's reputation, and The Stonebreaker of the following year and another detailed landscape, Val d'Aosta in 1859 gained him further repute. These pictures were much praised by Ruskin , who became a great friend of Brett. Brett later concentrated almost entirely on seascapes and landscapes, especially around the coast of Britain. A particularly good example is his Ramsgate Sands of 1894.

    Extractions: John Brett was the son of a veterinary surgeon. He showed an early enthusiasm for geology, astronomy and painting. When he was forty he became a member of the Royal Society of Astronomers. In his house on Putney Heath Lane, Brett installed a large telescope for astronomical observations. Brett entered the Royal Academy as a student when he was twenty two years old. However Brett was more interested in the ideas of the art critic John Ruskin (1819-1900) and the work of the artists who formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 than the classical ideals of the Royal Academy. In 1853 John Brett met one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Holman Hunt . Brett's association with the Pre-Raphaelite artists and his reading of Ruskin's Modern Painters had a profound effect on his painting. The Stonebreaker depicts a young boy breaking flint stone at the roadside in bright sunlight. The view has been identified as looking over the Mole Valley towards Box Hill, Surrey. The milestone in the foreground of the painting indicates the distance from London (23 miles). There is a railway bridge and an embankment in the middle distance at the right, while left of the centre one looks down to the spire of St. Michael's Church. The painting seems to reflect Ruskin's ideal of truth to nature as well as Brett's interest in geology. Ruskin himself was also interested in geology and natural science.

Als John 19 war, gründeten einige Familienmitglieder mit ihren Freunden eine spiritualistische Kirche in Johns Heimatstadt in Nottinghamshire. Nach seiner Ausbildung als Metzger , arbeitete er im Catering und Barmanagement. Mit 20 beschloss John seine medialen und künstlerischen Talente, zu entwickeln. Er saß lange in einem Zirkel zur Entwicklung der Trance, als ihm völlig überraschend ein Medium in einer öffentlichen Demonstration medialer Fähigkeiten in einer spiritualistischen Kirche mitteilte, dass er ein medialer Maler sei. Heute arbeitet John als Lehrer in seiner spiritualistischen Gemeinde, obwohl er das nie wollte, und hat viel Freude am Erfolg seiner Schüler, die er nicht nur in Zeichnen, sondern auch in der Entwicklung der Medialität und der Bühnenarbeit schult. Vor kurzem hat John auch in einer Fernsehdokumentation der BBC über Spiritualismus mitgewirkt. Er interessiert sich darüber hinaus auch für indianische Kultur und Spiritualität. Auf diesem Gebiet würde er gerne intensiver arbeiten, denn das Medizinrad und die Totemtiere faszinieren ihn sehr.
