Extractions: Horse Attacked by Lion A n exhibition now on view at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts demonstrates two conflicting French approaches to nature in art during the 19th century. Nature Leashed and Unleashed: Barye and 19th-Century Animal Sculptures presents some 30 works of art and will be on view through July 22. "Small scale bronzes of animals became a very popular subject for sculpture in the 19th century," says Virginia Museum Director Michael Brand. "Many show familiar views of domestic animals or animals related to the gentlemanly pursuits of sporting and horseracing, while others show savage encounters between wild animals." On one side is French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875), who is well known for his unflinching, realistic sculptures of animals, often shown in violent interaction. "To some 19th-century viewers, his depiction of the raw instincts of aggressor and prey pushed the limits of taste and challenged the purpose of art," says Kathleen Schrader, associate curator of European sculpture, decorative arts and prints at the museum. "The conservative art establishment was especially put off by his art. In his brutal scenes of animal violence, there was no allegorical or moral veil to humanize the content. Critics felt these subjects were unworthy of fine art and derided his sculptures as 'paperweights' or as fit only for a menagerie.

Extractions: Click to Enlarge Antoine Louis Barye Sculpture - This is an inherited item we recently received - I believe it to be the "Lionne du Senegal" by Antoine Louis Barye (1796 - 1875) highly acclaimed as the finest sculptor of the French Animaliers school famous for his works of the big cats. The name "Barye" is inscribed on the base of the statue just below the belly of the lioness and on the underneath a crossbar reads "845 Gulaid" it appears. It has a beautiful black and brown patina, stands approx. 8 1/8" tall by 11 1/2" length, and weighs approx. 5lbs 10oz. I am not 100% certain of its authenticity but from my investigation I believe it to be the work of Msr. Barye. It is a really beautiful piece of bronze work. Click to Enlarge Ceramic mold for "Walking Lion" - I believe this to be a plaster copy of Antoine Louis Barye's bronze image titled "Walking Lion", one of his most famous sculptures. It stands approx. 8" high including the wooden stand by 9 1/2" length. Its patina is multicolored redish to green and the condition is good to fair with small chips on the lion's mane, body, and base. The metal plaque reading "Walking Lion, Antoine Louis Barye, 1796-1875" is installed in the center of the wooden stand. Date of production and exact maker of the reproduction are unknown. Actual original bronzes of the same model run between $5000.00 and $12,000.00 dependinng on age, cast quality, and patina. A mark "57 Alva Studio" is inscribed into the base along the side.

Extractions: Key Ideas Story Theseus was the son of Aegeus (EE-GEE-us), the king of Athens, and of Aethra (ETH-rah), daughter of the king of Troezen (TRO-zhen). Remarkably intelligent and very strong, Theseus accomplished many amazing tasks. He slayed the mighty Minotaur (MIN-a-tor) in the Labyrinth of Crete (CREET), and repulsed an invasion of Athens by the Amazons, a race of female warriors. Pirithous (pi-RITH-oh-us), King of the Lapiths (LAP-iths), heard of Theseus's reputation and wanted to see for himself if Theseus was indeed as brave and clever as people said. So, one day when Theseus was herding his cattle near Marathon, Pirithous made a raid on his herd. A fight broke out at once. However, Pirithous overcome with admiration for Theseus, surrendered and humbly told him that he would accept any punishment Theseus chose. But Theseus asked only for his friendship in return.
