   Extractions: JOHN WHITE ALEXANDER John White Alexander was one of America's premier portrait and figure painters at the turn of the century, renowned for his sensual depiction of beautiful women. Phyllis is a prime example of the artist's mature style. Throughout the last decade of his life, Alexander was fascinated with capturing the effects of sunlight on figures posed in indoor settings. Phyllis , painted late in the summer of 1909 in Seabright, New Jersey, is characteristic of this theme. Phyllis is not only a striking portrait of a young woman, but also a study in mood. The gentle curves of the figure and the glowing light that radiates outward from the glass bowl of white peonies create an evocative, mysterious tone. This preoccupation with the inner life and emotions of his sitters, rather than with a realistic depiction of outer reality, was a hallmark of Alexander's late paintings. His works were highly praised by the critics, the public, and his numerous patrons. Exhibited extensively in the artist's lifetime

   Extractions: "Duveneck Boys" after meeting J. Frank Currier in Polling, Bavaria and painted with the group in Florence and Venice in 1879. In 1881 he returned to New York City and worked as an illustrator for ten years and then moved to Paris for another decade. It was during this stay in Paris that he achieved his greatest prominence and became the leading American exponent of the aesthetic principles of the Art Nouveau movement. His masterpiece is "Isabella: or the Pot of Basil," named after the poem by Keats. In this painting, Alexander worked with a fluid, sweeping line, combining an almost abstract, decorative rhythm of shape with a graceful and voluptuous expressiveness. Some of his portraits are painted in transparent colors on roughly woven canvas as attempt at increased textural emphasis investigated by such other American artists of the time such as William Merrit Chase.

In 1877 he went to Paris for his first formal art training, and then to Munich, where he enrolled at the Kunstakademie under Gyuala Benczºr. In 1879 they travelled to Italy, where Alexander formed friendships with James McNeill Whistler and Henry James. He also exhibited at the National Academy of Design. By 1893 his reputation in both Europe and America had soared, and in 1895 he was awarded a prestigious commission for a series of murals entitled the Evolution of the Book in the newly established Library of Congress in Washington, DC. After 1901 Alexander became deeply involved with the promotion of the arts in America. He won numerous mural commissions (e.g. Pittsburgh, PA, Carnegie Inst.; from 1905, unfinished) and continued to paint portraits

    Extractions: During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, American art's internationalism and cosmopolitanism, perhaps its most characteristic features, were fostered by a generation of artists who sought foreign training, self-consciously reveling in their art's very lack of "Americanness." Their increased attention to formal issues, with little regard to subject matter, realism, or national expression, contrasted with ante-bellum concerns grounded in native subject matter and narrative. John White Alexander developed and flourished during this period. Born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, Alexander's early interest in drawing led him to New York in 1875 where he worked as an illustrator for Harper Brothers. In 1877 he sailed for Europe and, after a brief stop in Paris, enrolled at the Munich Royal Academy studio of the Hungarian artist Gyula Benczur. In 1878 he joined the circle of artists working around Frank Duveneck in P61fing, Bavaria, and later in Venice and Florence. Upon his return to New York in 1881
